Umm so on the Zpoc weapon of choice discussion, about halfway through a bunch of people start saying that it takes 1 shot to the head to kill a zed with any gun including .22lr.  Ok so I've been told .22s flip instead of spiral and that's why they bounce around in the skull or even chest.  So my point is we aren't really saying they are dead until their head either has no brain (from a bullet passing through) or their skull isn't recognizable anymore right?

The only thing they use their brains for is to walk, run, scratch, crawl and eat.  I can't imagine a .22 would do nearly as much damage to them as it would to the living.

I think the Max Brooks theory is probably bull (like most of his theories). I'm guessing that the whole boucing around the skull thing has been blown out of proportion. I would think (someone will be able to confirm/deny this) that a .22 short lacks the power to punch through the skull twice, so the round will enter the skull then ricochet probably once off the inside of the skull.

Might be wrong but it seems more likely then a round bouncing around the skull like a pinball

but he'd still be dead right ?
Yes a .22lr well placed into the skull would kill a zombie. It just has to be a well placed shot, it must enter straight in or you run a risk of it ricochetting off.
People don't realize how hard it is to make that head shot everytime, even for people who shoot often.

Dont take what I was saying the wrong way Prime. That was my point with being accurate with a .22 is that your not going to be able to crank off headshots consistantly.

I personally hit the range at least once, sometimes twice a week. I know for a fact that outside of 10-15 yards I can not make consistant head shots when we run scenarios. Thats why I double tap center mass first. Hell even the navy seals who do nothing but train with their weapons all the time have a hard time with it. Thats why they use double tap center mass, single head shot.

Inside of 10-12 feet Im really good with my pistol. Real easy exercise for pistol accuracy is nailing two 2x4's together so there is a groove between them. Then sticking washers, or quarters or something in the and trying to shoot them. Its a great way to warm up to when your doing competition shooting.
Somebody should rele make a revised version of the book...or maybe a whole different zed survival book, a book tht is based on accurate data for surviving the zpoc, maybe LZ should make one :0 meh idk If just felt like putting this out there e. e
Its all about the hollow points.

.22 rounds spiral while in the air. They have to in order to get enough velocity to fly any distance. That is why the barrel is grooved. A .22 is a smaller slug. The weight in grains extends from 40 to 70 grains. They are not big. Unless you are up clos a .22lr may penetrate the skull but it will not have the velocity to penetrate and continue to bounce around. The brain matter would be enough to slow it. Now that brain matter would be dead and likely a human too. The .22lr and the .223/5.56 NATO are the same circumference. They are .224". The .223 has much much more power because of the amount of gun pwder behind it. The .223 can penetrate the skull at close, moderate and in the right circumstance long distance. The .223 round penetrates then follows the path of weaker flesh until the round loses momentum or becomes lodged in the skull or other bones. The .22lr moves at about 1050 feet per second. The .223 flies at about 3 times that, between 2600 and 3000 feet per second.

This link is to a pick in My Photos on this site. The bullet at the far right is a .22 long rifle. The bullet 4th fron the left is the .223 Remington.

First of all let me say that the .22LR is no man stopper not by a long shot thats not what it was made to do. With that being said it is still a bullet and can kill you just as easily as a .45 Auto. 22lr is not a long range effective round its most  effective range is going to be between 0-100 yards but 50 yards and closer is where the 22lr would be its most potent. When a 22lr punctures a skull it does 1 of 2 things 1. It enters one side and pierces ur brain and bounces of the opposite side of the skull and pinballs its way around your skull turning ur brain into swiss cheese killing any human or zombie. 2. after it penetrates ur skull it hits the opposite side of ur brain and then just basically explodes into dozens of tiny pieces causing massive damage to any human or undead brain...Also when you throw the whole hollow point factor it just makes it better. 22lr is my ideal zombie defense caliber from 50 yards it will do as much damage to the head a 45 would when you are shot from 50 yards or closer and your not wearing a kevlar helmet just about any bullet is going to puncture ur skull and go straight through ur brain killing u instantly...Remember we are talking about zombies..head shots are a must so in that regard stopping power is useless since your not trying to cause body damage or blood loss. Your only way of stopping a zombie is a shot to the brain...So remember you dont need a 1 hitter quiter round when every single bullet has to kill the same way it doesnt matter if its a .50 cal or a 22lr is if doesnt puncture the brain its useless.  Lastly think about this a 22lr has literally no recoil so if you have to fire a follow up shot chances are its going to be more on target than ur bigger .223 or .308 so your accuracy will go up dramaticaly and on top of that you can fill a 7.62 ammo can with roughly 300 rounds of .223 or u can take that same ammo can and fill it with litterally 1,000 rounds of 22lr so you do the math you can carry 3 times the ammo of any other centerfire cartridge so I think a 22lr should be in every zombie killers arsenal.

Dead is dead but the .22lr is no where near the killer of a .45 ACP or .45 LC or any .45 caliber. No where near the ballistics. The weight of the 45 slug penetrating the skull does so much more traumatic brain damage as to make the .22lr look like nothing. What the .45acp and LC lack in velocity they make up for in sheer mass. 230 grain slugs compared to 42 grain slugs. Imagine getting hit my a car moving at 90 MPH. You might survive but if you breath it will likely be hooked up to a machine. The sheer mass of the car colliding with the body could all but dismember a person.  You have to look at the whole picture.

22lr is my ideal zombie defense caliber from 50 yards it will do as much damage to the head a 45 would when you are shot from 50 yards or closer and your not wearing a kevlar helmet just about any bullet is going to puncture ur skull and go straight through ur brain killing u instantly.
