I've gotta say i'm kinda surprised no one has touched on this before- I'd say that if you're going to attempt to stay in an urban area, then this is a nearly essential skill. Free Running is essentially "stunt running", as in in involves large jumps, vaulting over obstacles, taking a step or two off of a wall to grab things, etc.)
If you're not familiar with it, this video gives you a pretty good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEeqHj3Nj2c

Now, obviously, in the context of a zombie apocalypse most of the flashy stuff should be cut out, but at it's core, Free Running is not just the ability to do crazy stunts- it's getting to places in the fastest way possible, regardless of the obstacles between you and that place. (Actually, that's Parkour, but they're rather similar.) It would be an excellent way to stay off of the zombie infested streets and allows you to take the road less travelled, which might make all the difference (poetry reference, right there)
However, it's also an excellent way to injure yourself, which is why I suggest you start to learn it before the zombie apocalypse- after it's begun, the chance of breaking something in the learning process is too great to risk.

Opinions?

yah exactly what Mr. Hayter said, but i formed my own tracuer group. You have to be in top shape to have to ability to do some of the the thing you do on youtube and shit like that, i have some vids on the somewere...
I would think it is far too dangerous, even for experienced people. If you break anything even a finger then your chances of survival are cut to almost nil.
It's not too dangerous once you understand how it's done- the person who came up with it, David Belle, has never suffered a serious injury while performing it. And he pioneered it.

again, I'm not suggesting that you decide to start learning it when the zombies start chewing on your front door. It's all about preparation.

And I've broken my wrist and been able to take care of myself fine.
The trouble is, if you break your wrist, or even something silly like a finger then you be unable to do the simple things needed to keep one step ahead of the undead eg-climb ladders/work weapons etc etc

Even if you dislocate/strain an ankle you won't be able to outrun a zombie very well etc etc

If you are very good at it then that's fine. Other than that I would say that use it only as a very last resort.
exactly .. but also if you injure yourself during an outbreak you`re not gonna have access to medical care, doctors or even painkillers to help you leading to you being pretty much screwed from there on in. survival is about keeping yourself alive not taking life threatening risks..

i have great respect for the people that do these crazy sports and love watching youtube vids of them, but in an outbreak no thanks sounds too much like jumping literately from the frying pan into the fire.... :)~
It appears I'm not the only one who has thought to apply this. Thank you for raising awareness, my friend.
Well...if you have 30 pound rucksack on you, primary rifle, a secondary handgun, and a melee weapon, I don't think free running is an option. Too much weight movng around. Center of gravity would be fucked.
If you are just making a break for it, perhaps to provide a diversion for others in your group to take a better tactical position, I can see where this may come in useful through a moderately sized group of loosely spread zeds. Beyond that, you're up the creek without a paddle. Economy of motion is exceptionally important principle in any survival situation. Even a person in excellent physical condition cannot provide continue providing the energy required for such activity for an extended period of time. Living and moving around in a highly populated urban environment would require that one use such techniques for extended periods of time, a feat which is likely to cause fatigue levels that will cause you to make mistakes you cannot take back. If you have no choice, do what you must...but proper preparations will include an escape plan that does not include gymnastics. Try getting out of the city instead...
Hey that's a great idea, good thing were all born with that talent/skill.
Cool video. Hate to see someone free run right into a herd of zombies.
I say just sit tight in your building/fortified rolling machine of some sort/armory, etc. Exposing yourself to the horde can have disastrous consequences, and I really don't see the need. When the time comes, we will all have our pick of vehicles to use, for as long as we need them (yes, even bicycles, as ridiculous as that is) and being on foot is just going to become outdated and unnecessary. And anyone with a lick of sense in their melon should either be VERY ready to defend their building in the city (like, they've shot a gun before and know how to load a rocket launcher or arm a grenade) or else the more peaceful folk of the survivor gene pool should be expeditiously on their way out of town, to form some sort of commune and eschew eating meat.
if you wanted to stay in an urban area, ive got a pistol and one round you can have, but to comment, it would be good to be able to do that, just leap over a wall and by bye stupid zombies.
