Of course, everyone thinks Z films to not have anything taken away, but there are certain things that cause a film to get away from the true essence of the zombie.

One thing I think should be taken out is the 'Play-doh Effect' in which Zombies can easily tear a victim limb from limb and rip them open like a paper bag.

or like the Saw franchise, the first movie ,begrudging admission, had a moral point... but all the following films seem to be a psychopath's wet dream

I think the biggest example to the point is (arguably) Dawn '04... granted, I dont HATE the movie, but by comparison to Romero's film (barring Land of the Dead maybe) it sucks. For some of the reasons mentioned so far here:
1)Running Zeds (termed loosely)
2)Unneeded Sex scene that failed to advance the story (although breif)
3)Horribly written characters (big ones that stand out are CJ and Ving Rhames' character)... I think the only one with any complexity was the guy who sells tvs (cant recall name) and thats not saying much
4)A whole group that happens to be expert marksmen
5)Lack of a solid plot

Really the best part of the movie is the Title Credits with the Johnny Cash ("when the man comes around) montage; and the extra features, namely the fake news report
I actually enjoy Romero's take on sequels, he takes the general plot (ghouls (as he refers to them) arising from the dead for no apparent reason) but instead of fudging up the original story, he creates new, loosely related stories.

Take Night and Dawn for instance...

Instead of a begrudging continuation of the first story (all the main characters dying and a preist getting bit but surviving) he instead flashed forward several months and began a fresh plot...adn then again with Day... and then again with Land... and then only to begin the 'romeroverse' again with Diary

thats just me
i hated wolf creek. Horrible film. But agreed. Character development is a MUST. Why bother watching the movie if you don't care what happens to the characters?
Yeah...if a character is in "grave" danger (oooo I made a pun), the movie viewers should be clutching the edges of their seats with quickened heart beats. If they just don't care, where is the tension?
i have so many character ideas of my own. to much imagination for my own good lol
Thats the biggest problem with myself... I tried writing a zed related novella, and by what people who have read what little I did write, my discriptions of events, things and actions were pretty good...but I CANT MAKE A CHARACTER 3 DIMENSIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!! and I will not burden others (and embarrass myself) with a bunch of idiot characters

I may rewrite it as a first person 'diary' type narrative (but its been done soooo much)...but that wont happen (I failed English 1020 in college because I was lazy what papers I did turn in were A's, lol)

Im rambling...
Just do what I do when I write stories. Base the characters on people in real life that you know really well. It makes it easier to think of how the character would act and stuff. Even base one off of you.
i have to agree, it seems like there's no real struggle to get the arm off by a zombie, i find it hard ti belive that a zombie is that strong when having almost no muscles
Yeah, but it's still pretty amusing... I think Shaun of the Dead did a good job of making fun of it.
"Oi, He's got and arm off!!"
Shawn of the Dead was fuckin EXCELLENT. to me that seemed more real then any other movie.
the best is when someone with no firearms training is just walking through and is hitting undead guys in the face!. one other thing is where they get their weapons, ive seen some horror movies that takes place in a small town and they've got military grade hardware. where the hell does this movie take place? waco?. and zombies dont weild weapons, thats a writer sneaking in at three in the morning to write some stupid crap that popped into his head earlier that day. if i see a zombie with a gun and he's using it, im done, i wont watch another horror movie.
