How about we, as a community of zombie survivalists, put together our own manual for being prepared and staying alive during an outbreak? Members can (based on what they are good at) put down ideas along with directions on how to make it work.
Example; instead of saying fortify your home, put exactly what kinds of things you can do, what materials you will need, and directions for making it work.
It would be nice to see what everyone is good at while helping others who may be new to all this.
Maybe you know of home remedies for illnesses since medicine wont be easily obtained, home defense, or hunting tips for when you may need to go hunting for food for your family or group. Weapon maintenance, anything! I have found many great ideas on this site that i never would of thought of. and i thought i had pretty much thought of everything! lol. But now i find that it is very hard to find them again. It would be cool to be able to go to one place to find them all. so don't be shy! show us what you know. teach others to help themselves so we all have a better chance of survival when the dreaded Z day comes.

I really dont question the ability that fire would have against zombies. I actually think fire would be very effective.... if it was properly controled and not in a building or near fumes...

I think my biggest worry with fire is... other things catch on fire and the deadhead might not fall to the ground immediately like alive people would. Even a few seconds of fire tumbling around could turn out to be a huge problem.

... I don't see it worth risking unless it's absolutely necessary.
This is a general packing list for survival. This is my personal list. It does not include food or weapons. MRE’s or survival food bars are a good idea for food past that with a little research and practice food can be obtained almost anywhere. Your climate and situation will dictate your necessities. Be familiar with your gear, you should not have anything you do not know how to use. Practice packing and unpacking. I can personally say that this gear can be carried extreme distances even with the added weight of food water and weapons. Proper conditioning is a must, both for you and your gear. DO NOT bring new shoes, you will regret it and it may even cause injury.

In Large Pack of your Choice:

hydration system
water purification
fixed blade knife (combat/survival/hunting)
e-tool & carrier (save room in your pack)
pack axe or hatchet
shelter (ultra light backpacking/bivy)

Some items were listed multiple times this was intentional. Do not scavenge from your survival kit to fill your pack or vice versa. This being said there is also reason to carry two survival kits and two first aid kits for long term survival. Please give input or personal preferences for gear it is appreciated. Good Luck.
Also if you have any questions about wilderness survival in general contact me and perhaps I can help.
Multi fuel engines like the ones that are on Dueces and five tons are your best bet they will run ANYTHING that burns
good ideas guy, keep em coming.
i like where your going with this. diesel vehicles are going to be your best bet anyway because they are larger(generally) and more dependable. an abundance of fuel just makes the deal sweeter
one thing i cannot stress more is to PRACTICE WITH YOUR WEAPONS! just cause you saw a movie with a samurai does not mean you can use a katana. i've been using one for years and its not as easy as it looks. its hard to get that perfect or even kinda straight cut when your new to a katana. there's a reason samurai spent their life perfecting the art.

that done with, its important for people to learn to handle all kinds of weapons and even make your own. i have trained at least a little in all kinds of melee weapons from all over the world (i have a real passion for it). there are a few things you need to think of when picking/improvising a weapon. so lets start, shall we?

1st. practicing with weapons: i find it important, fascinating, and really fun to practice using all kinds of weapons. its really good to go to a range and shot a few rounds. knowledge of guns is one of those things in life you should rather have and not need, then need and not have. weather it be for self defense or a zombie invasion. there are safe and helpful classes you can take that are sometime sponsored by your local police. you can go to a range, take a class, and get in the physical practice of firing a gun. one thing you need to remember about guns above other weapons, in my opinion, is that this weapon is a TOOL and not a toy. it is VERY dangerous and can end a life in the movement of a finger.
once you've covered firearms you should think about melee weapons. a plus about a weapon like a club or sword is that it doesn't need reloading. a big drawback is the range and (no one seems to think of this) the fact that you WILL GET TIRED EVENTUALLY. people don't seem to realize that it takes a lot of physical endurance to fight for hours with a melee weapon.
the first step to getting up to par in your melee usage is to pick a weapon you like. obviously katanas are popular and not a bad choice to start with honestly. you can get a wooden katana (boken or bokken) for under $20 online. once you find a weapon you like (doesn't have to be the best for killing zombies) find a wooden/practice version of it. practice with it solo. get used to swinging it. after you have the basic feel of it get a target. punching bags work well, i used a tire swing in my backyard when i first started out years ago, even a hardwood tree will work. the first thing you will notice is that if feels different striking an object. keep practicing on your target, break boards, ect. your practice weapon will most likely break at some point, i go though bokens like water. after you have the feel of contact down, start sparing with friends who have been doing the same training as you. start slow and get used to seeing openings and movements. i recommend light to no contact starting out and as you go on, you'll stop flinching/blinking, you'll be able to take hits and spar harder, and you'll lose fear and gain respect for the weapon.
once you've got the basics and all, pick up a new weapon and train with that. relate it to your previous weapon and anything else you've handled. keep doing this until you have a well rounded understanding of all kinds of weapons. also classes and books can help gain an understanding of technique, and sparing against different people will help you from learning one friends moves and making you unprepared for a random attack, because you will get used to each other's moves over time.

2nd. making and choosing a weapon: the first thing to think when choosing or making a weapon is "is this going to be able to destroy another persons skull and brain" "could i be killed in one shot by this weapon, because if so then i can kill something with it" things along those lines.
things a weapon should do are: increase you attack range, increase he damage you inflict on something, not impair you and your speed (both carrying and using the weapon). if it fits most or all of those to your liking then it would be a fair weapon for you. picking a weapon is also a personal preference. you should pick something your comfortable with, if your not, you may not use it to its full ability.
Making a weapon: a weapon can be made out of anything really. when i comes down to it you need to know what you make will be able to: kill something, not break, be comfortable for you, and follow the criteria for a weapon the best you can make it to. today i made a crude mace from junk in the rubble.
ADD PICTURE HERE
This skill is one that you acquire after you’ve become comfortable with your weapons. It takes trial and error and there’s only one way to get better that I know of and that’s to practice making things out of stuff.
The second way to make a weapon is to find something in one piece that can be used. Good examples are chair legs, posts, ect. Just ask yourself if it meets the criteria of the weapon, if it can kill easily, and if your comfortable using it.
Once you’ve made a weapon, go back to step 1 and practice with it.

That just about covers the basics of weapons. Or at least what I can think of after 950 words. If I missed something please add it in a reply.

here's the image for the "ADD PICTURE HERE" up above. my computer was being dumb earlier
ok so there hasn't been much talk about where to go and i think a school would be great. think about it, schools have big mettle doors and are big enough to form a large group. they have janitors closets full of flammable chemicals and other things and the fields have huge light towers that can be used as watch towers. intercoms for alerting of a zombie inside and lots of crap for barricading windows are also provided. and to gain entry simply break a window preferably on the second floor but if the school doesn't have i than gust barricade it up asap.
The main problem with schools is that in any emergency shelters are set up in most schools, so there would be a high number of infected in the school and even if there was not there would at least be a large number of people more than likely with limited supplies and training that would attract the infected.
All I know is that along with my weapons that I bring with me, and along with the combat gear....there is one thing you will always need to bring with you. I don't think the ZSG even covers it as far as I remember.

Always bring a can opener. I have several. :) Good luck.
I have seen alot of talk about where to go during an outbreak. I think the best way to go about this topic is instead of naming specific places, we should identify a number of specific qualities that the structure should have. Since areas vary so greatly it would be more useful if we tried to inform people on what features best represent a chance for survival, so they know what best to look for I.E. isolated, made of brick, or what ever, so long as it can help some one decide what building or place represents the best chance of survival. In any guide too many specifics can make it subject to opinion rather than facts as well as limit the usefulness of it depending on where you live and what is available to that specific person at that time. I feel the same goes for weapons and any thing else that goes in it the guide, it should should be a set of guide lines that if followed would give some one a better chance of survival. Any facts entered into it should be just that proven facts not opinions or hear say when ever possible backed up by actual evidence.
that's a great idea,
hey guys, what do you think of making this a group (outbreak) where different discussions could be for different chapters i would really like to start putting together our own book, have been planning one for a long time. and this would be a great one. any opinions on that?
