I've seen plenty of best weapon and best place to go threads, but not one with gear. I mean stuff like, tools, armor, clothes, shoes, etc. Make sure its practical though, items you can get ahold of. Hell, even stuff you can make yourself!
Currently, I have a paintball mask equipped with an LED tactical flashlight, and a breathing filter to avoid getting debris in my mouth.
I prefer to wear microfiber urban camo thats not too tight, but fits close. Durable black Nike crosstrainers, carbonfiber impact riding armor, and a black resin-fiber backpack.
Tools I would carry-
A knife with a serrated edge.
A small prybar.
A lockpick kit.
A lighter and matches.
A whetstone.
Plyers.
A medical kit.
Several Mp3 players with single portable speakers.

Yes I acutally have carried this around in a tactical vest for the day(minus weapons because jail isn't fun). I have room for it all. My father was in the military and he still has his old army stuff that fits. The equipment is new.

I partially disagree with your statement about leather.
Can you bite through a leather jacket or a leather glove?
It will also turn a slash and depending on the leather perhaps a stab.
While I agree with you about "real" body armor it is going to be much harder to find than a leather jacket and a pair of gloves.
I'm not sure how accurate that is, after all, the masseter is pretty strong, but I'm not very certain about the jaws ability to pierce treated leather.
In the medieval days, it worked against sharpened swords and even diverted spears from killing thrusts. It may work better then some modern armors in that is is light-weight and can be formed to fit almost against the skin.
Zombies may be predators, but they have the same jaw power and set of teeth as any man. I don't know about you, but I can't bite through a peice of leather without chewing on it for an hour.
Yeah, if the steel plate is inanimate, I don't know about you, but if something bites down on any part of me, my first response is to become the most kinetically active thing on earth.
I'm not going to stand still while I'm getting bitten, I'll be twisting, kicking, jumping, pushing, punching, and moving as much as possible.
I would also like to add that our strength is limited by the introduction of lactic acid to the muscle tissue which causes the musculature to fatigue and become painful. Zeds likely have no such system and therefore will hold on until such time as they are forced to let go. I don't know about you, but even through leather you will feel those teeth and the action of forcing a zed off might present enough sawing action to cut through.
Leather, especially biker leather, is a good first line defence if you are not met by a horde but I wouldn't go wading in expecting to be teeth proof.
