What kind of things would you, or could you make in preparation for an outbreak? Or even during an outbreak?

Shoes that have a similar texture to that of a dogs foot for maximum grip.
A wristblade of some sort, like the one from assassins creed might come in handy. (one with an edge, not just a spike.)

I'll try to come up with more later.

Ok this is something that I did make, or modify actually, a wooden bat with long nails driven through fashioned kind of like spikes so the hit is fatal. The first one I made worked for a while, but then it split apart from where I'd driven the nails in, so now I wrap the end up with duct tape and they last longer. I've got one in every room in my house behind the door, just like a hillbilly. :P
Try wrapping it in razor wire, or barbed wire yet? Its a bit more durable then ducttape, and fairly intimidating when raiders come around. :)
The only problem is it wont do anymore damage to a zombie, but it will add weight. Good trade off?
a compressed air powered spike...

take like a long spike (old bayonet or something) inside a peice of heavy pvc pipe, the other end, attach an air hose with a valve, when the zed comes up, release the air, the pressure should be enough to jam it into thier heads...and then just have the spike attached to something so it can be recovered (think deep sea fishing pole)

it makes more sense in my head, but looks stooopid when i explain it
No Country for Old Men anyone?

The captive bolt pistol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captive_bolt_pistol) sounds like what you are talking about. If put on the end of a pole or used from any secure position, this set up would be extremely effective.
kinda like a harpoon? no, I get it, had thought about a harpoon before but was like, WTF?? where would I get one?? ha! No, good one, I like to stay up high, so this idea is a perfect one. good job :)
Thanks! My logic is that these tools are used to slaughter animals day in and day out so they should be rugged enough to continually punch through a human skull.

Although these do run off of compressed air or blank rounds it would be simple enough to make one or find one that is run off of a stiff spring. That would make the weapon require little maintenance.

Merely pull back to ready the bolt and any sort of trigger that would release the hold on the spring and send the bolt in to the head of zed.

One other modification that I would make would be a slight increase to the length of the bolt. Better safe then sorry. This would definitely be a circumstantial weapon, but in the niche it would be effective.
Modifying brass knuckles to have an edge could come in hand for silently disabling a zed if he doesn't see you.

I can make a laser trip alarm out of a laser pointer, a switchboard, and an alarm clock. I could easily switch the alarm clock up for anything lethal.
Trench Spike, look it them. Great tool.
I have something that would be better than a trench spike. It's called the Annihilator it's a demolition hammer, here's a pic

It is quite heavy and it has a hammer on one end, a classic claw on other end. A 'drywall axe' used for only drywall but could be quite useful against zombies. And on the bottom end of it there's a spike! In my opinion it'd be a great hand weapon for zombie destruction and a useful tool for repairs and such.
They may be easily distracted if the enemies use milk bones though... hmm, I'll have to rethink this... :P
or....it could blow up in your face.
