I would love to hear some ideas for keeping children safe during an outbreak.Especially thinking about traveling to safer locations, modes of transport, keeping kids safe from other predators etc. During an outbreak I think I would immediately go to my child’s school to get her, but my maternal instinct would kick into overdrive and want to make sure all the kids were safe.
So what would you do?

Great plan! I guess for parents like the ones here there is a survivalist mentality. But there are too many people in this world who think that someone is going to come save them. I am fortunate in that fact that there are two adults in the home, so I will at least have another adult to take part of the load. Like you I have neighbors who I believe we can depend on to help. Also we live in a small community which is another bonus-in my opinion.
I think thats short term thinking look at where humans came from we were hunter nomad groups for thousands of years all of that is still inside us and humans and children especially adapt and learn very quickly its a simple matter really the bad parents and the slow kids wont be around that long so the ones that do make it will have a good chance of surviving.
I agree with this. No matter the case; or how long you expound on it --- natural order will always maintain itself. Those who can not adapt; from weaker genes and more finicky children --- those too far pampered by modern day living to overcome --- will succumb first. I do not doubt that there will be a slew of overweight, zombified American children weened on McDonalds and XBox alone to contend with.

I would never sacrifice a child --- being a long-term thinker. I have no moral delusions of "why should I bring a child into this terrible world?" because I come from a line of survivors. I know exactly why I should bring a child into this terrible world --- and that's because it will be one more intelligent mind and strong back to oversee the evolution of humanity.

I harbor no doubts that my children will adapt and survive; because they come from parents who are well-experienced in having to do just that.
i like this, also, i would teachmy kid everything i knew, then give him/her a weapon, and set them in a high up spot, and go scavenge. assuming they were older, but if they were really young i would invest in a kevlar baby carrier, and some kevlar footy pajamas. assuming i had a child
I'm happy someone asked this question. What about infants. I know I have a new born, he doesn't really cry and he drinks breast milk.
I often thought would it be safer to stay in one place then run around. I also have a 11 year, I think he would be fine - we're used to not having much. But what would be the best suggestion on what to do?
lol i am younger,(in my teens, actual age not being discussed, but older than 15),and i think i would have a good chance of survival, i am active year round, well built know how to drive a car, many diffirent types of boats, knowcpr and first aid, and have some firearms training,so i think i would have a good chance.
Good topic. I think older kids who were raised with some intelligence and aren't spoiled lazy kids would do fine, especially with a good group, some might do well on their own. But for people with the young children I think it would be very hard if you had to keep moving because they would slow you down, but even with them slowing you down you and every person in your team would still have to work to protect them, they are after all the future of our race. I think it all comes down to the intelligence, moral integrity and common sense of your group. As close knit smart team will survive where as the ones who are just people who happened upon each other tend to be their own demise.
The zombie outbreak no matter how devastating would have to come to an end at some point, once all the undead have run out of food and/or rotted away. The best chance for humanity to survive and not become extinct is for young adults to survive and being to reproduce after the zombie menace is no longer a threat. Having children during the outbreak would diminish your chances of survival, not only for you, your kids, but also to the group at large as you’ll be a drag. People that had older kids, say 14 and up, will be okay as those kids should be quick, independence and adaptable enough to survive with a minimum of supervision. I’d stay away from groups with large numbers of children, the elderly, sick or disabled as this would put a greater demand on you to provide for the group and thereby expose you to greater danger. You’d also have to shoulder a larger share of providing defense for the group, while limiting your mobility. The individual’s chances of survival are directly proportional to the group he/she joins, so why handicap yourself at the get go.
I like the idea of going to the school. Find a classroom, or gym, cafeteria, ect. and let them, all who can't fight stay there, and everyone else can fight, hold the fort, look for supplies, ect. I recomend an inner city public school, as they're most of time built to stand up to a riot, Hurricane, tornado, or other disaster.
I say put them to work at something or other. It will keep their minds off all the chaos around them. Kids notice a lot of things. They know when there's trouble. Now real small kids can do nothing but burp and shit themself but some kids can do stuff with supervision. They can learn and have fun while they are doing things too. They can be taught survival skills in their everyday play. Now this can be done once you've got a decent safe setup. If you're on the run keep em close and never let them alone. Anything gets near them it's destroyed.
Grab all the ADD kids and set them loose, perfect distraction while you and the kids who can stay still for 20 mins run for shelter.
Well if you're gonna let em loose give em weapons.
