In the fabled and oft maligned (with good reason) Necronomicon (aka book of the dead) there is mention that should the doorway be left open past the hour of Tiamet (I know the time but can't remember if it's AM or PM) then the dead will rise to devour the living. Perhaps the evil elder gods are plotting their revenge even as we write...

Should the cause of such an event be supernatural in nature as opposed to man-made as suggested elsewhere, then it is also likely that they will be directed by a superior intelligence (think puppets) this would change the rules a bit for me in terms of long term outlook...

I'm going with the whole Flight Attendant and Monkey scenario. LMAO (thats classic)

BTW dont eat Chicken in China either!

Going with Hornet on the serious aspect, I just hope the agent isnt airborne...

i think it will be a biological agent also.... something someone cooks up and doesnt realize the true power of and it is unleashed on a small portion and takes over the world.... or it could be from moldy bread

I say that in mankind's quest for the ultimate magic diet a bacteria will be developed to attack fat in the body. It will be introduced in pill form and after taken will mix with food preservatives in the body("Dam Burger King") and make the consumer into a zombie. How it works? The Bacteria will kill the body by reacting with the lymphatic system first then consuming the white blood cells mutating and moving to regular cells quickly adapting to its new genetic programming instead of fat cells Then it will shut down the organs one by one until depth occurs. When the live cells are mostly eliminated the bacteria will mutate one last time working with the preservatives and moving to the brain as well as acting as a cell suspender keeping the few living cells in a form of suspended animation while the reast begin to decay. The brain will be severely damaged especially the frontal lobe (the part that controls inhibition)and only the most basic functions will survive (mostly the brain stem and the lower oblongata), thus leading to the violent and cannibalistic behavior. The human body is adaptive and very persistent so it will attempt to live on through the suspended cells thus recreating its self to its new circumstance. In this state and giving certain variables like environment and climate this body could most likely last 10-20 years and in the colder climates possible longer. Hey George Romero how about this ?

I don't like the sound of this...If I become a vegetarian will I be able to avoid such a fate (I do love BK from time to time though!!)

On a serious note, this is how I imagine things happening should such a scenario ever come to pass. Keep in mind that I have a laymen's understanding of most biological processes and that my scenario isn't going to explain everything, but here goes.

I understand the argument for biological contamination of some type I however wish to posit my opinion in a different arena.

My fundamental argument here is that dead bodies work less well than living bodies. If the dead are walking and rotting at the same time, then many of the organic systems in place to allow movement (the central nervous system, muscle, tendons, etc.) will become ineffectual as time goes on, resulting in the dead simply decaying into a bag of pus that can’t move let alone feed on living flesh.

While "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks later" looked at the zombie from the “virus” point of view, Romero left little or no explanation as to why those who were clinically dead re-animated and began eating the living. I found "28 Days Later" to be an interesting take on the zombie, and certainly more plausible than the dead rising from the grave, however, I don't consider the persons infected by the rage virus to truly be zombies in the sense I have grown up with.

In the films and stories that have bred the genre, zombies are re-animated corpses. As a result, the damage that can be inflicted upon them is limited as they do not feel pain, nor do their bodies react to damage the way a human's does, since the internal organs no longer work to support the body’s function, shooting a dead person in the heart is about as pointless as shooting a steak. The only method under such circumstances is to destroy the brain or disconnect it from the rest of the body (The “remove the head or destroy the brain” rule, RHDB)

If the zombies are indeed re-animated corpses and they have no functioning internal organs, then how do they move? It is safe to conjecture that they have been re-animated as the result of some extra-normal or unknown source that controls them through some unknown means. This might explain why it is that zombies can rot until they are falling to pieces but still remain ambulatory. Since they gain no sustenance from eating living flesh (non working stomach and bowels to process), then why are they doing what they are doing…well, to destroy humanity.

It is fair to conjecture under such circumstances that some extraneous force would be responsible for creating such an army. The first flaw I see in my own logic is that if all other organs are non-operational, then of what use is the brain? That question now asked; Could the organic tissue of the brain itself be designed to house “the soul” and therefore as long as that tissue is intact an extraneous intelligence can remote control or even possess the remains and work them as a tool? Much the same way we humans might use a forklift, such a tool would have fairly specific uses but it is enough to get the task completed.

Should this be the case, I think it would be the absolute worst case scenario. The reason I believe this is that if a third party intelligence is controlling such creatures then the zombies will act under command. As a result, whatever intelligence is commanding them will have specific strategies for defeating us, making the mindless rambling zombie a much more difficult enemy to conquer or repel. The possible silver lining in such a scenario is that the dead will be acting with a definitive military objective (could be something as simple as "destroy all human life"), which gives us humans the opportunity to discover what the enemy is, what it's goals are, and how it attempts to achieve those goals.

Now, all that being said I’m curious as to what other might think about this scenario. What are the flaws in my thinking (I am sure there are a few) and how would you feel should this become the scenario…Hypothesize with me…

Truly I base my opinion in sci fit tv because its fun and I like the movies, but in realty it will most like be either a biologic or microbiologic (nanites) that will bring this to pass! Its best at this point to just let this site be a place to play and relax after a long hard day at work. I have always felt that grounding fantasy in reality takes away the escape!

i belive it will be the fault of the many scientist who created the large hadron collider.

I'm of the opinion that if the super collider does damage, then so be it. They built it without asking anyone else, they'll turn it on without asking anyone else. Right now there's a bunch of white lab coats sitting around a desk saying (in a nasally voice) "All those silly stupid people who think that we're going to destroy the world...hey why is my face melting off?"
