Im sure most of the people on this site have heard of it, but if you didnt it is a belt fed heavy machine gun, SAW. The military has been using it for years, until recently my cousin who is a marine stationed in Iraq told me that they are going to be replacing it soon. He says they want to replace it with something more light weight but still able to produce the same amount of firepower the SAW had. And it got be thinking wouldn't that make a great ghoul killing firearm, light weight but still has enormous firepower. If anbody has any information on this new firearm feel free to post it here.

SAWs are not really good for zed killing. They were designed for suppression by fire. The SAW gunner pinned you down while the riflemen maneuvered around to pick you off. The replacement for the SAW is from FN and called the Mimi I believe.
If your corned or have to get past a large amount of ghouls then yes it can come in handy. And if you have a image I would like to see it, thanks.
Okay, I found mention of a "FN Herstal Minimi 5.56x45mm" but it is the Squad Automatic Weapon adopted by the US, the M249 SAW. I may be getting some wires crossed, but if Wolfe4086 and I are talking about the same weapon then the FN Minimi isn't a replacement it's the same gun. It could be that they are updating the model but I could find no mention of it...

In any case, you are better off finding an accurate, one shot at a time firearm as opposed to a fully auto machine gun. This applies of course more to the "Dead rising" as opposed to the "28 days later viral plague" scenario. The latter is human beings who are controlled by a virus, the former, don't feel pain and bullets make no difference to them...

Further investigation shows that the USMC put out a request for someone to develop a IAR (Infantry Automatic Weapon) to replace the M249...apparently there has been some talk about the Ultimax MK-3 (pictured)

But it seems to have only a 100 round drum mag and that isn't enough for sustained suppressive fire...
No that really isnt, but the information is very useful, thank you.
its not really a zombie killing gun but it be great for fighting of bandits.
If it had a semi-auto setting and you are good enough to keep it to your shoulder and keep firing that would be one bad mammer jammer as long as it did not...jam. One thing that I have often though of though is these bullets are doing damage. No they are not feeling it but if your were engaging a group and let a few burp go in to the mass it could do anything from shatter a spine or a femur and at least slow them down and give you chance to get away.

Are there better tools? Sure.

Would I turn it down? Not on my life.
the SAW is 14 pounds, so not really light weight, and the 200 round belt is nither light, or silent (in the plastic box, much better in the canvas). it is not a presise as a M16 series, any weapon that fires from the open bolt suffers from the bolt assemble salmming forwaed just before fireing. the weapon is an ammo hog, ripping through something like 800 rpm. and once teh belt is gone, you haave a heavy club.
(yes i know it is desined to also work form the M16 mag, but the one time i tried it, it failed jaming the weapon)
