Well, whats better? Bicycle or Car? Now your mind might jump right to car but; lets face it. The enemy is slow, anything beyond a jog will outrun them. Cars require gasoline, and I don't care how much of it you have backed up you always run the risk of running out and searching for more. Bicycles are portable and you can always have them with you. The only thing the car has going for it is power and warmth.
Other than that... Bicycle FTW

...Maybe solar car...

Here's my idea on the bicycle.

Buy a stationary bike and connect it to an alternator and rig that to a bank of 12 volt marine batteries that you can rig to an invertor for electricity in your fortified treehouse.
I'm surprised that no one has proposed a moped yet, or a motorcycle.

You can carry a hell of a lot more on a motorcycle than you can on a bike, its more manueverable, faster, and has better gas mileage than anything else out there.

A nice beast of a Ducati could serve a lot of people really well :) Wear your helmets, kids!

I don't even think this is a valid question- to me, it just doesn't seem like a point to argue over. I mean, common sense would dictate that you want to remain as mobile as possible, and lots of people get really tired after cycling for an extended period of time. Plus, you have no physical protection from the elements or the zeds. They could be all up on you in a matter of seconds!
Dude, how fast you gonna go up hill with a horde on your ass? What have you got to protect yourself? Instead of a couple hundred horse power you've got one human power. That doesn't cut it.
I've come to realize, dear, that there are people out there who think a few cans of food and a basball bat (aluminim, no less!) is enough to last through a zombie invasion...and then there are people like us who are all about the heavy duty, heavy ammo, and heavy fortifications. We just have to see who outlasts who when the time comes :)
Ya know I see some bartering potential here. At what temperature does aluminum melt? I bet we can make a few decent arrow and bolt shafts from melted down bats and cast aluminum bicycle frames. Say, one meal per bat. A night of safety for a CAD4 bike frame and doing some chores.

Yeah, free market, yeah.
I like the way you think, sir!
You forgot your Katana!

I swear, Max Brooks' handbook is going to get more people killed than just about anything else during the Z-Day.
Glad I never read the book.

There's actually some good stuff in it, but people take some of the handbook way too seriously.

And the Z-Day book was kind of good.
What if...What if...What if...

It all depends on the situation you find yourself in at the time, and the needs of the moment. You need to be adaptable to the time. There's going to be moments when a big honking SUV would be best, times when a bicycle would be best, and times when your own two feet are the best.

I do agree with Prime regarding having access to a four wheel ATV with some hauling capability.
Well when all you have is a bicycle I guess you're ok. I'd rather go on foot then a bicycle. You maneuver better on your feet.

I like my ATV but again that would be used only when needed. I have 6 horses. They too have their advantages but I'm not gonna blast through a horde of zeds on a quarterhorse. Horses are just transportation to conserve fuel. ATV for going where SUV can't go and more then a horse is needed. Bicycles are for when the wind slows down and you need electric stored in the batteries to run your Sat Comm System and lights.
Of course, bike. Especially if it's a mountain bike. And the human body can forego luxeries such as power at this point. Unless we're going on the offense. Then car. The noise will attract the undead. btw Don't forget about the runners. A brisk jog ain't gonna do squat.
