This is ment more for after the outbreak is full throttle. There are many untold dangers of scavenging and salvaging things from "empty" houses.

First thing is you never truely know if they are empty. There are always the 2 legged walking, and the 2 legged shambling. You can't ignore the chance that there are some 4 legged ones that may have moved in as well.

Zombie survival guide and WWZ touched on urban combat a bit, so many blind corners, packed rooms. Zombies or trigger happy survivors can be anywhere. Ceiling, floor, hidden closets, behind furniture, prone behind/under shit. You never can tell, so ALWAYS go very very slowly. After a house is cleared, clear it again in reverse order. If the situation permits make sure you and your partners know where everyone is. Talking quietly if you have to. Just make sure you don't unload your double barreled zombie repellent in one of your friends.

Another thing to be wary of is traps and boobie traps. Treat every house like it's a meth lab. Watch for fishing wire, lumps in the carpet, anything that looks like it's been messed with and is out of the ordinary. If at ANY TIME you see something that looks odd, find another way in.

My personal recommendations:
Surround and check out a house thoroughly before approaching. If the situation permits, yell out to the house to see if anyone is inside. If no answer yell out that you intend to approach the house please don't shoot. When you are just outside the house, call into the house again/peak through windows. "Is there is anyone in the house? Is there anyone wounded? Trade?" "If anyone is at home, please say so I'd rather move on down the street than get shot!"

If at any point someone takes to shooting at you, it's time to move on to the next house. Don't even waste your time with suppressing fire.

If there are booby traps, move on to another home. If you think there are booby traps move on to another home. If needed leave a marker for booby traps in home.

Anyone plz add to topic

best way to search a house is all of them at once. I have this idea it maybe a little ridiculous but it could work. Now my idea is for getting zombies out of ur neighbor hood. get a truck one driver one riding shotgun with a shotgun and one man in the back. hook up a stereo system and pump up the music. drive slowly alll over the neighborhood and let the zombies follow ur truck if to many get near then drive faster then eventually lead them all out of your hood and hurry up and give them the slip and search house like crazy and get back to ur base, cuz those zombies will be back. now be sure to have the gas to do this.
now, to be fair im from england and ive only been to america once but ive seen those big estates in florida and such, they all have walls and large gates. if you can get in there close it up then all you have to do is ,and i say this lightly, attract all the zombie into one place say a central plaza. while theyre distracted search all the homes you can, get rid of the z's with some sort of trap if you want. these estates are for the rich so no doubt there will be lots of rare items in the houses. and maybe weapons. and once you have cleared a house why not stay for a while, i mean its shelter, and as stated before the owners will be rich so there will probably be some security system, maybe even a security HQ for the estate. once your done with the estate move on to the next. and after the florida i saw theres no shortage of them.
but as many of us have said people will be your greatest hurdle, especially rich selfish people who will shoot you at any chance they get.
Scavenging is way too dangerous to do on your own. I say at a minimum take a buddy and a set of two way radios. If you absolutely must go in (you shouldn't unless you are almost out of supplies) but if you MUST, then set a pocket recorder on the doorstep and let it play your "don't shoot me" message and wait ten minits. If nothing happens then go in.

If you have at least three buddies leave one outside, hidden in a good overwatch to see if someone approaches or if something comes out. The second buddy needs to carry a flashlight and a weapon while you carry a weapon and the bag o loot. The guy with the loot needs to work the radio too. the key here is that these two stay together.

If theres only two of you, both go in. You can't work the light, a gun and still be able to loot at the same time.

If you're alone....well i'd pass unless there was no other way and you were down to your last twinkie.

Oh and one last thought...I'd take a shortbarreled weapon with a lot of kick or a hatchet. There won't be much room to swing anything too long and a rifle will take both hands to operate.
