This is a month into a class 3-4 infection. (Fresher zombies can run)
Start: Sam Griggs looked down the scope of the rifle from the second story window of the gas station.
"I see 4 of them," He said over to Jason who was looking through a pair of binoculars.
"I only see 3," Jason replied.
"One trapped in the silver Toyota."
"Ha, I see it, look at the bastard squirm."
"We gonna go or not?" Scott asked from the back of the room.
"Yeah, Sam give us cover." Jason said as he walked towards the door pulling the hood over his head and tightening the bandana around his mouth. Scott did the same and they drew their silenced USP pistols and silently got out of the building. They quietly snuck across the street and hid behind a minivan in the parking lot of the grocery store.
"Get inside and get all the food you can in that grocery cart, then we rush it back to the Humvee." Jason whispered. Scott nodded and peeked around the corner. He saw the three infected and they all looked pretty old.
"I'm pretty sure these are shamblers." Scott said.
"They better be, I don't need any more of these things chasing full speed after me."
"Heh, yeah. Make a break for it on your signal, man."
Jason and Scott started moving through the parking lot when they heard it. BLAM!...BLAM!...BLAM!...BLAM! It was the sound of Sam's 12 gauge shotgun. They both turned to see about 20 infected swarming around the first floor of the gas station Sam was in. The sound got the attention of the three infected in the parking lot and one of them turned to see Scott and Jason and snarled. Then it tore off at full speed towards him while the two others came behind.
"Thought you said they were shamblers!" Jason yelled.
"They looked like it!" Scott said back pulling the TMP off his back and raising it. He fired a couple shots and managed to land a headshot on the front running zombie. Jason fired his silenced MP5 from behind, and he took out one of the shamblers that was farther back. With that the other shambler found some energy and started running. Scott took it out before it could reach them. Then they heard a lot of growling and snarling. Scott looked to the field next to the grocery store to see a whole lot of zombies running full speed across the field.
"Get back to the gas station!" He yelled to Jason.
"No! That's where they're heading. Get down under a car and stay quiet." Jason replied already getting down. About 40 seconds later undead feet pounded on the pavement around them. More shotgun rounds were still going off. Most of them had gone by and they thought they had made it when one of them stopped and looked around. The others continued to the gas station while this one stayed behind. It looked up and sniffed the air, then let out a low growl. Scott and Jason both held their breath and the thing started to turn away. But then everything happened at once. Scott's radio crackled on and Sam's voice rose over the static screaming.
"WHERE ARE YOU GUYS! COULD USE SOME BACK UP HERE," With gunshots still erupting in the background. The thing jumped down and grabbed Scott's ankle. It started biting at his boot viciously. "Stay still!" Jason yelled raising his pistol. He tried training his sights on the thing's head but it kept moving, Scott's screams and jerking around didn't help much either.
Jason pulls the trigger just as the zombie is about bite down on Scott's foot. The bullet hits the ghoul in face, but not before going through Scott's foot.
"Ahhh!" Scott screams, "you shot my goddamn foot!"
"I told you to stop moving."
The undead swarm surrounds car.
The radio chirps, "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON DOWN THERE?"
Zombie arms reach under the car. Jason spots a man hole cover. He quickly pries it up and shoves Scott into the hole. He follows behind Scott and slides the cover back over the hole above him just as the zombies close in.
Scott clenched his teeth and grabbed at his foot. He took off the boot and winced at the bloody bullethole in his foot.
"That thing bite through the boot?" Jason asked from across the sewer.
"Don't think so, the bullet got my heel though," Scott replied ripping a piece of his shirt off and wrapping his foot to try and stop the bleeding.
"Let's get moving," Jason said looking up at the manhole to hear the scratching of the things above.
"What about Sam?"
Almost to answer his question the radio chirped on, this time the voice was faint because of the bad signal underground.
"...mana.....o hol...em off, I..ot...bit.....oulder....nt stop.....eeding.....caded off...oors an...ows.....seco....stor...s..help..I..eed.........."
With that the signal faded.
"Look like Sam's screwed." Jason said.
Scott did you hear that Scott......
almost instantly Scott has turned for the worse as he began to rise Jason backed up "Scott....Scott...Scott"
the radio suddenly cracked a scream not just a scream but a crunching eating sound as well
"Scott we best get out of here
what the?
how can you walk dont that hurt
there is a pause...........silence
"scott can you hear me?!!!
"he's not your friend any more"
THWOMP.......SPLAT.
Blood splattered on Jason's pant leg and he looked up surprised. He saw Scott, the right part of his forehead caved in, and blood dribbling down, his eyes were a milky white. Scott let out a gurgling sound, stumbled backward, dropped to his knees, and fell face first into the sewer floor. He turned to see a large, bald man in an orange jumpsuit with a lead pipe in his hand.
Jason quickly raised his USP and stepped back a little, training it on the man. He dropped the pipe and raised his hands. "Hey man, I'm not here to hurt you," He said.
Jason lowered the pistol a bit, but he kept it ready.
"I'm Jason, and you?"
"Name's Pete," the scruffy man said, "I escaped to the sewers a few hours ago, was gettin' chased by them rotten freaks, but I fear they may have gotten down here too. I know the way out of here though. Follow me." With that he begins to jog down the sewer, and Jason begins to follow slowly, but first he takes a good look back at his once alive friend's corpse. "Goodbye, Scott," A tear begins to form in his eye. "Hey! You comin'!" comes Pete's voice down farther in the sewer. Jason looks at Scott one last time then slowly turns back and catches up with Pete. "Where are we goin'?" Jason asks, "I've been in the sewers before, I know my way around. I was being hunted by a gang of mugsters, they tried to get my money but I punched one o' them in the face and escaped down here. We're going to my Mums house. She's a good cook and I bet she's tough enough to have survived this past month." "Oh OK," replied Jason lamely. They travel deeper into the sewers for a few minutes when the begin hearing groaning sounds on the other side of the sewers. "Ssssh!" Pete whispers and he slams himself and Jason to the wall. They remain quiet, and the groaning continues. They see the silhouette of a crippled figure on the other side, and the only thing between it and a good meal is the water and waste river. Pete begins to move slowly parallel, shuffling his feet and Jason begins to follow. They continue doing so until they can no longer see or hear the figure. They move much quieter now and run in sprints. After another few minutes, they begin to see a ring of light coming from above and Pete climbs a few steps up the ladder beneath. "Lets see... manhole F19... thats our stop! Come on!" He lifts up the manhole a crack. No zombies in sight. He lifts the entire thing off and steps up to fresh grounds and Jason follows. He nearly falls back down into the sewers but Pete gives him a hand. "Dont wanna do that do we? :D" He smiles a real smile. Something Jason hasn't seen for an entire month.
Pete looked up and then down the street.
"Her place should be the first 'round that corner," He said pointing up the street.
Jason was surprised to see that there weren't any infected on the street. They moved up and turned the corner. Jason saw atleast 7 bodies strewn across the ground, most of the top of their heads missing and blood splattered all over the pavement.
Pete smiled, "This is Ma's place alirght."
Before they had made it all the way up the steps to the front porch, the door bust open and a large woman rolled out and aimed a double-barrel shotgun at Pete, then Jason.
"Ma, its me! Pete!" Pete exclaimed.
"Peteyy!" She cried wrapping her arms around him, "I thought you were dead by now!"
"Maaa, I told you to stop calling me Petey, 'specially round guests." Pete said looking embarrisingly to Jason.
Jason couldn't help but to manage a chuckle before being escorted inside.
"Ever since this crazy zombie outbreak I haven't been able to call your brother at all! I hope hes alright, little Joshy... but anyway whos your friend, Petey? I hope you like apple pie" looking at Jason in a sweet mother kind of way. "MOTHER! What did I tell you about that name..." mumbles Pete. "Hello, ma'am, my names Jason. I just met Pete down in the, uh...sewers." "THE SEWERS!!! Pete, what did I tell you about going down in those sewers, they're dangerous! Please listen to your momma deary." Pete rolls his eyes. Jason looks at the apple pie baking and then looks around the rest of the house. Its a decent house, better than that gas station him and Scott and Sam used to live in. Not that thats so difficult, lets say its better looking than alot of your average city homes. "Make yourself at home, Jason," "Thank you," he replies politely, "Mrs...what shall I call you?" "Just call me Mrs. Sherlington dear." Jason nods. Suddenly a male voice calls from across the room. "Is Pete home?" "Yes honey and he brought a guest, Harry meet Jason. Jason, Harry." "Hello" says Jason to the man. "Yeah hi" grumbles the man and passes right by him without shaking. "Hi Pete." he grumbles again. "The pie is done!" calls Mrs. Sherlington, "Mmmm! Apple pie!" exclaims Harry Sherlington, and he grabs almost the entire thing and stuffs it into his mouth. "Any zombie sightings since I was asleep?" "None, honey. I'm telling you, I think we should move out of the city...." "No can do. We're staying here and we're gonna kill every last one of these undead scum. We're strong enough!" The Mrs. gets a kind of I-dont-know-'bout-this kind of face, and begins to sweep the floor.
They ate a porkroast and mashed poatatoes in silence. Jason sat at the end of the table, feeling awkward with Harry's eyes on him. Finally Mrs. Sherlington spoke up "Sorry the food isn't too good Jason, we've been running low lately on food."
"We're fine..." Harry said
"Harry, the cabinets are almost empty."
"We're fine."
"We're down to our last box of shells, we need ammo."
"We're fine!"
Mrs. Sherlington moved back a little bit, scared.
Jason decided to speak up, "Umm, I have some supplies back at my safehouse.. we could barricade it off nicely.." He looked timidly to Harry who's face was turning red.
"We're not leaving this house!"
"We could just bring um the supplies here..."
"No supply runs! I'm not letting anyone else die because of me!"
"Harry, with Dalton... that wasn't your fault.." Mrs. Sherlington said.
"Wha..What happened to Uncle Dalton?" Pete questioned.
Mrs. Sherlington looked to Pete, "Petey honey, your Uncle Dalton went out to scavenge some supplies... He didn't come back for s couple days.. and we saw him one day... he.. he was.. one of them."
Pete's face saddened and he looked at his mom, then down to his plate.
"And I dont want that to happen to any of you," Harry said through the silence.
All was silent for the rest of the dinner. Afterwards they all help with the dishes and then go over to the living room and watched TV, powered by a generator. First they watched some Deadliest Catch on Discovery, then some X-Files on the Sci-Fi Channel (although they were in enough of an X-File themselves) and then finally some News. "Thats enough TV," Harry grumbles, and as soon as he turns off the TV a window across the room is smashed and hands begin to reach through! "Son of a b%$#@" Pete yelps, and Harry and Jason get into action right away and draw their guns. They begin firing wildly into the horde of zombie heads and arms sticking through the window. "We're wastin' ammo, they'll never get through there," Harry says. "But in a while they can lay waste to those cades. Everyone get upstairs- move!" Everyone, including Mrs. Sherlington, who is carrying her own shotgun, dash up the stairs. They quickly begin smashing at the top stairs so the zombies wouldn't be able to get up as easy. The next step- they pile a few pieces of furniture and useless materials upon each other in front of the staircase making it even harder for the zombies to get their meal. Afterwards, they wait for the barricades to fall.
After 10 mins of waiting for the zombies to come they finnaly come and as the zombies are trying to get through the barricade of furniture petey takes the shotgun from mrs sherlington and starts firing as the zombie get past there cade and nails one right in the head and jason starts firing his usp at the zombies and after 5mins of shooting and both petey and jason run out of ammo so petey starts hitting them with the stock of the shotgun as they rush in and at the same time harry goes into the closent and looks up and opens a secret entrince to the attic and he pulls down a ladder and screams to all of them up hear and jason and mrs sherlington rush up there as petey holds the zombies off finaly petey runs to the ladder for dear life and climbs up and harry pulls the ladder up and closes the secret enterense then jason say now what do we do and harry says find away to get the fu** out of hear
Everyone thinks and looks at the tools around them. "What could we do with this junk?" Jason screams. "Meh, I got nothing." Pete says. "My brain is turned off." Harry says. Mrs. Sherlington begins to get a happy look on her face. Then it turns into an evily happy look. "What is it, honey?" Harry asks. Mrs. begins to laugh a very satisfied laugh. "Look at all this stuff. You cant think of something? ...Something...really mobile?" "Huh, Ma?" says a baffled Pete.
--
The next time we see our heroes they're all finished several medium sized vehicles, made of wood, duckt tape, sticks and leftover wheels. "Ready, everyone?" Harry asks worriedly to everyone else before he lifts up the attic hatch. "Ready!" everyone calls together. Harry opens the hatch and begins driving right down the steps and through the zombies and across the room and everyone follows. They make a sharp turn and drive down the remaining steps and run over tons of zombies. Zoom! They all go right out the door, and continue running over zombies until they come to a stop. "Run!!!" Pete cries. Everyone gets out and begins running down the street with less zombies. "Any ammo left?" Jason calls to Pete, "Yeah, some for th' shotgun." Jason takes the ammo and the gun and begins firing at the zombies shambling down the street towards them. With a good saving of ammo, they manage to get down the street alive, but all the zombies that attacked the house are hot on their tail. "Everyone into the van!" Mrs. Sherlington orders. Everyone gets into a dirty but large van, and the Mrs. finds the keys. Harry starts up the engine, and they continue their chase downtown.
