All animals naturally fear zombies, as a fact. However, the domesticated canine is one of the bravest, most loyal animals on the face of the Earth. They are willing to put themselves in the way of danger to protect who they believe to be their "pack". Such is taken into account in the canine unit of a police outfit. They train dogs to do their job of protecting indefinitely, regardless of fear or situation. Knowing this, would it be practical to use trained dogs as a way to deal with zombies? Not for attacking of course, but the fact that they are faster, more agile, and more energetic than humans, they could serve as a distraction, or a lure. They are living flesh, which means a zombie will go after them, but prefer humans. Though, would a trained dog be able to catch a zombie's attention, drawing it away from a zombie? Would training a dog to face zombie invasion be a valuable resource, or a waste of time?

That's a very good idea... my friend has a rabbit named Cloud...
when you say silent commands do you mean like hand signals and stuff?
The dog is silently giving you signals, like pointing and pulling, as well as you giving silent hand commands like putting one hand up in front of it to stay, or waving it over to heel. It goes along in this situation just like any other dog training, using a Pavlovian response mechanism. What one can make the dog do with a teat, a vocal command, and a hand gesture will, over time, be recognised by the dog with just a hand gesture.
yeah i know, the possibilities are endless...
I wouldn't use a dog as a sentry, unless I could train him NOT to bark at the sight of a zombie, the noise would attract unwanted company.
So you would train him to bark all the time until he detects a zombie?

If a zombie is coming near to you, surely you want an early warning system i.e a dog
Well the dogs themselves donthave to bite the Zs, just knock them over so you can either dispatch them or high tail it out of there. I'd get a little chihuahua and strap a camera on him to act as my little camera scout, a German Shepard(is that how you spell it? To guard my base of operation, a pit bull to accompany me everywhere, and a bulldog, just because I like english bull dogs =)

As long as the dogs are properly trained, sit, stay, laydown, heel, etc, and thought not to bite the Zs, I think it'll be fine.
Keep in mind that finding and training a dog after an outbreak starts would be a bitch. But no matter how well trained a dog is, if it feels it's in mortal danger instinct will kick in regardless and it will growl, bark, bite and maul its way to safety.
You also have to think of it this way,
(i haven't read 100% of the posts yet so this might have already been brought up.)
But the dog is a member of your family, and would you send your family member into certain danger?
Now if you were in extreme danger and your furry friend protects you is another story. But regardless i don't think i could send mien little Gabbs out, knowing of the situation and possible consequences.
dogs can be trained to sense the virus in infected but not fully zombified people,(all animals can sense infection) and they can also smell zombies from much farther away than we can. dogs would be vital as lookouts or sniffer dogs at borders
