You don't want a workout while fighting zombies...you want to be efficient. Therefore, a carbine (such as the Ruger 10/22) is the best choice. Especially since it is easy to make a silencer for .22 caliber rifles and carbines.
Anything in a caliber that the .mil or civil authorities use; that way I can get my hands on a steady stream of ammo.

I'd take along my Bushmaster M4, of course, and try to get my hands on a 9mm or .45 for close in work. Sound would be a problem, but the #1 weapon is avoidance.
a nuclear bomb, i say wipe the whole planet. maybee get the lawnmower...=]
alright the m-16 is a horrible choice it was meant to be a airforce secuirity gun not frontlines historic shit just a simple gun if any thing id go for my sks and 12 gauge any day
M-16 is a great weapon and IS used to day as we speak in Iraq on the front lines.
I AM an Iraqi vet in fact I am an infantrymen and have used my rifle IN Iraq and I never once did I have trouble with my rifle out side of 1 double feed due to a bad mag. As far has you hearing this or that from guys coming back I didn't "hear" second hand I actually used my weapon in battle and 90% of the guys coming back are P.O.G's who never left the F.O.B and run around telling stupid stories that start with " So no shit there I was............"I can promise you I HAVE used it IT DOES work. Too many people sit around talking trash on a good battle rifle who have no first hand or for that matter second hand experiance with the weapon to making any judgements on this weapon system. You may deal in guns and thats fine but I HAVE USED the weapon in combat I spent well over 2 years in Iraq and NEVER have I heard of or seen a soldier pick up an AK because his M16 jammed. Stop drinking the cool-aid people.
Sorry but I have to agree with street here. I have put thousands of rounds thru an M-16 without any problems, and as far as the "dirt from normal use builds up" if I ever saw one of my Marines using a dirty weapon he probably wouldnt have to worry about the miss fire because I would kill him. Take care of your rifle and it will take care of you. I WOULD NOT want an AK as a duty rifle. The M-16 has a better rate of ACCURATE fire and since we are talking about head shots thats whats gonna count. Also I have seen people pick up an AK but only because they thought it was cool, not because their weapon jammed in a firefight.... So there I was... LOL
Gotta agree with Street too. Every other time I've fired a friends AK, it went to shit. The idea that it is reliable is absolutely untrue. It is easy to clean, and easy to repair, but it is by no means reliable. We clean that damn pos everytime we fire it, but it just doesn't seem to want to cooperate. I could see having an AK in the zombiepocalypse, but only as a last ditch weapon if I was fleeing with it, not actually planning on shooting anything.
yup, I'd take an AK anyday.. great weapon and easy to modify/maintain.
Screw the Katana. Grab a Ruger 10/22 and high-cap magazine. A .22 round will kill a zombie with one shot to the head, and .22 ammo is EVERYWHERE. Plus, the 10/22 is really damned customizable...you could put on a stock and add a spike on the bottom and have a melee ready 10/22 carbine.
Using your BRAIN !!
If somebody could get a hold of a super-quick and aggressive flesh-eating bacteria, that might make a cool weapon to shoot at a zombie, so maybe they'd disintegrate.
