My guess is they maintain quickness and strength for about 30 minutes. The human blood will coagulate and rigor mortis will set in. They have to be limited by what they were before. A 90 year old zed is not going to be a powerhouse no matter how fresh.

zombies can not recouperate from damage like we can so when their muscles tear do to over use they dont heal and become weak
Romero dosen't actually even agree with fast zombies either..
I think a zombie would be lacking the motorskills to walk properly... much less run. If they tried running they would probably fall down.
Like Killroy said, when Z's work their muscles hard, their muscles tear, just like they would if they were human, except, unlike humans, Z's muscles do not repair and become stronger.

Which means they can maintain strength as long as they can until their muscles basically disintigrate.

And like Brigitta said, a zombie should never be fast. I don't know. I won't believe in fast-zombies 'til I see one.

Peace!

People are citing reports of fast zombies and I'm just trying to nail down; how fast and how long so I can make changes in my preparations.
The only logic I can see for a superfast zombie is in the moment of conversion. The change over could make it powerfull but it would be temporary.
Thank you i've been looking for reports as well, but i can't see any around where i am. But i really hope they aren't out there. Could make travel much more dangerous.
In other words, if the zombie is fast/superfast a la George Romero's superzeds, then we have to figure out the logic behind that before trying to figure out its endtime. If it's related to some weird magical/monstrous thing (a la vamps) then the answer could very well be "never."

I'd have to say that if it is magic/monstrous the exact opposite would be true. With no solid definition or routine rules any number of different zombies is possible. Think "Day of the Dead" and "Land of the Dead." Thinking zombies. Shouldn't have been possible, but it happened.

Whether or not there can or cannot be fast zombies is up to whoever is observing them. Rejecting the notion out-of-hand will only you make you deader when you run into one. In a world where undead things are eating the flesh of living creatures it may be a better idea to figure out how fast zombies are possible as opposed to how they can't exist.
I have just seen proof of 'fast zombies'! If you check the timeline on the Wiki of this site then in the second video, the "park incident", then the zombie that 'wakes up' in that movie clearly runs after the man it's attaking. This is a disturbing revelation for me and makes me even more terrified to leave my current location.
though i'm not sure for how long it's speed or strength lasted, i'm positive that it ran.
That's a moment of conversion type of zombie but they don't stay that way for long. A bunch of super zombies, who stay that way would be a big time problem. Physical law would say that they must deteriorate over time though, just like everything else.
okay heres the deal, I think that fast zombies are either infected with a virus i.e. 28 days later or they are the voodoo zombies. Basically I don't think they ever do slow down unless killed.
If you feel no pain, then you have no limit to your ability.~Cody

They would have to slow down eventually because they feel pain i.e. have you ever tried to sprint really really hard without stretching? Tendons tear, muscles rip and it's shuffling time right after that. Despite zombies not being governed by the normal natural laws, they seem beholden to at least most of physical ones.

If we assume that zombies are reanimated beings, we can also assume that rigor-mortis means nothing. Non-pumping blood means nothing. Musculoskeletal things on the other hand are necessary for movement. That is to say that an electrical impulse can travel sans blood or oxygen. Sever the tendon, sever the circuit, no more fast zombie. By the same token reanimated tendons and muscles could be stretch to their limit, allowing for long amounts of rapid movement without tearing.

Still, by all rights they should exist somewhere, somehow.
If you feel no pain, then you have no limit to your ability. Zeds don't have to be fast, but they do have a death grip, and its not speed that will take you down, its that they never give up or get tired. So you can outrun and out walk zeds, but sooner or later, you are going to have to rest and recuperate your strenght.
