I've been considering various armor and their effectiveness.

Plate would stop a bite with no problem. It would also do a fairly good job keeping splatter off of you. Unfortunately it would slow you to almost their speed. On top of this it provides way too many hand holds.

Chain mail can stop a shark bite so should stop a zombie. The weight hangs from the shoulders and can fatigue the wearer. Splatter can get through the links and possibly cause infection.

Zombies usually don't shoot so ballistic armor isn't useful against them. Very helpful when faced with hostile survivors.

That leaves me with, in my mind, the only viable armor, leather. It will offer excellent protection against fingernails. Crush injures can result from a bite but the leather will stop the teeth from breaking skin. Coat it Crisco, vegetable oil, or Astro Glide and the zombies will have a hard time getting a hold of you. This also has the added benefit of making it waterproof. This great if forced into close combat and wll end up covered in blood.

i would go leather maybe heavy denim would work as well. I would hate to run around with a mamal toe looking like cat woman though.
leather is a good choice as long as heat isn't an issue where your wearing it.Also some police forces issue anti stab vests and anti cut kevlar mest sleaves.the sleaves would be very useful and if you can find them large enough you could put a pair on your legs too.most initial bits will be on your arm or lower leg as it's easy for a zed to grab a limb and pull it to it's mouth
I would go with the all leather biker look. XD
I used to wear a leather riding jacket when I worked at the animal shelter to stop dog bites. Humans don't have half the biting power that dogs do, so leather is a vialable option.
I agree with Leather. it's tough, yet light and flexible enough to remain comfortable. That, and it's easy enough to access it.
military issue camo ir great. you need to worry about vital points like neck and wrists. they make neck guards for paintball that would work perfectly and leather or shop gloves for the hands. but all leather would be way to hot and heavy.
I'm going to agree with the leather option, and add this;

Boots! Get a pair of good, durable, calf-high boots and break those babies in. You'll want them to feel like slippers when you're on the run. Boots are the best option because sneakers tend to fall apart with extremely rough use, and believe me, you're going to want your shoes to protect you from any half-zombies laying around that you mistook for dead (happens to the best of us). Boots, if you get good quality, will also keep your feet dry, both from water, and blood. Finally, they act as weapon storage (because you can NEVER have enough knives and magazines while fighting undead).

Wear goggles and a "muzzle" or a gas mask whenever you are actively pursuing the infected. This will somewhat protect you from any Undead splattering, keeping your eyes, nose, and mouth safe from the virus.

Leather is a very good option. When it is not available, denim is an acceptable substitute. When on the run, go very light on clothing. Make sure your clothing is form-fitting (in other words, as tight as possible without constricting movement) because you sure as hell don't want any excuse to hesitate for even a second, and if your clothing gets snagged on an object (or worse, a zombie!) then you just might be screwed. When you are actively hunting, however, I'd recommend layers; if you're actively hunting, then ideally, you have a safe place not far away and an escape plan, so the extra weight and fatigue shouldn't matter as much. Chain maille, in this case, is practical, especially if you have a Titanium or (much cheaper) Aluminum based armor set.

I've always found it amusing that the punk/goth/raver look of all leather, metal, boots, collars, arm cuffs, gloves, goggles, and muzzles is actually the most effective form of armor in the event of a Zombie Apocalypse. I have my closet full of gothic apparel for just this reason.
And you most certainly would have a swarm on you; I forgot to mention in my post that leather makes a minimal level of noise, and all forms of metal armor tend to be loud, clanky, and tend to make the wearer clumsy, often knocking things over or bumping into things, making enough noise to attract even the most rotted of Undead.
Leather would be on the whole very helpful though heat would be an issue in some climats.not that it would be accessable or afordable but I wonder if someone mad mail from high strength plastic it would be plenty strong very light mostly silent and would float if you fell in the water.I'm sure it could be made pliable enough so the it could be made more form fitting the metal chain.I really wonder if somthing like that would be practical or just a waste of time.
At first, as a maillesmith, I see this as a highly daunting idea. However, I will look into it and see if it's possible (I already make maille that is half bright aluminum, which is aluminum that is electrocuted and polished to stop the rusting process, and EPDM, or rubber.)
A gas mask isn't an option those things suck for breathing and eye sight. A shark bite suit would work they are mafe from high grade titanium so it would be light and bite proof.
At work I have to wear a stab proof vest. It is very flexible. Not that heavy. It could resist the living dead.
