If you think about it, there is not much acess to highly powerful weapons such as m16 and like a desert eagle. What would be some good house items to use?!?! I would think my lawn mower would work well if i modified it somehow.

a lawn mower makes too much niose. that would only attract more zombies. Plus you would need gas.
House items eh? Crowbar, no discussions...
Household items?
I'm afraid I have a different perspective than most of you as I am a sideshow performer. My home is made of canvas and moves from town to town. We don't have the typical items that most of you would have.
We make due though.
My weapon of choice would be a tent stake.
I know you all are thinking of those cute little plastic things you use on your pop up tent.
Not these.
These are circus stakes. Most of them are antiques, made from model T car axles. Four foot loong, 1 1/2" thick 35 lbs and are made from hardened steel that can be pounded through concrete. One end is sharp and pointy, the other is flattened out into a mushroom shape. Stab or bludgeon. They are not breaking.
Second choice- The Sledge Hammer used to drive those stakes. Normally a clumsy weapon, but in the hands of someone that can drive a hundred of those stakes mentioned above in a single day, hitting a three inch head every time...They take on a grace that is almost beyond belief.
Next we have the tent poles themselves. 2 1/2" thick, eight foot long oak poles with a 12" spike on the end that goes up through the grommets in the canvas. Pop one of those into an eyesocket and you have a twitchy zed.
Not to mention the blades used by the sword swallower. (By the way- The swords you get at a ren faire or flea market are useless. The blade might be good, bit the connection to the tang is crap. One good hit and you are holding nothing but a handle while a zombie staggers around with the blade partially embedded in it's head.) My bed of nails, while it won't stop them, slows them down when they impale their rotty feet on the 6" spikes. The fire breather is a weapon all by her self (Although we had to restrict her to only using it outside and far away from the tent).
We also have screwdrivers, stake pullers, crowbars, hammers and other tools. We also have these wonderful things called Set Screws. A four inch long carriage type bolt with a 3" wide t-shaped or butterfly shaped handle. They are used to screw set pieces onto the stage without needing tools. Hold that t handle in your palm with the screw out between your fingers, make a fist and you have one heck of a punching weapon. Closer than I ever want to get to a Zed, but an effective easily carried backup.
Most of us traveling types do carry some sort of weapon as a matter of course. Me, I have a crossbow in the cab of my truck. On me, I carry a butterfly knife and a pistol. Well...a mini pistol. A 22 derringer pistol. Two shots and I am out. Remarkably effective for a head shot (The tiny bullet bounces around the inside of the skull after penetrating. Really does a job on scrambling the brain), but I would rather depend on weapons that never need to be reloaded.
Tent stakes are the best.

agree heavily on the decrotive swords comment

unless you are paying over £200 minimum for a weapon you are not going to get anything trusting your life with

the vast majority of times you are getting a piece of stamped metal from india which is glued to the handle with a 1 inch tang....you are more likely to end up with the blade flying thrhough the air or slicing into yourself somehow

if you cannot afford a high quality piece (either hand made or by a good company such as Cold Steel/Generation 2) then stick to something from a home depot like a gardening machete/hand axe, these have at least passed a quality control test and are made to stand up to rough treatment

not to mention real swords/weapons need good maintenence with oiling/ sharpening
um....lawn mower....maybe not...

But things you can use that should be around your house:

Serrated Knifes(CQC)
Fire extinguisher(CQC)
Saw
Ax or hatchets
Hunting Rifles or Bows
Paintball markers firing marbles at the highest velocity possible.(barrel removed.)

I myself would get a Hunting or Sport rifle if you don't already have one.
Use you head, anything can be a weapon. Chairs, tables, plates, brooms, and etc.
"there is not much acess to highly powerful weapons such as m16"
the M16 uses a round that is not legal to hund deer with inmost states, and is not 'highly powerful'. my AR is the girl gun.
there is plenty acess to powerful weapons, every state has gun stores, most states you can get an AR15 (semi-auto verson of M16) for around a grand, you can build your own from a kit for less.

the dessert eagle is a favorit of hollywood, but i would skip it for a self defence, there are better guns, that carry more rounds, and are more comfterabul to shoot.

for my house, I have a Mossberg 500, and a PT1911 with ammo in my room, witch would alow me to fight to the rest of my collection of weapons, and supply of ammo. it is somethign that most any american can do, and good rifles start at under $100.

[for overseas, your milage might varry]
