So, we all have big, bombastic plans for dealing with an outbreak. Some seem well thought out, others a tad... cavalier. At any rate, some of us are sure to survive.
So, I pose this question: Presuming we're talking about a global outbreak, the end times and all, anyone thought about long term survival? Rebuilding, living in a post zombie world?
Personally, I think it's a given that government and social order will collapse pretty quickly. Pockets of survivors will be on their own. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on coping with that.

I think that society would rebuild itself, for instance, like minded groups of survivors will band together, forming communities, communities will expand or die, those that expand will join other communities (by peace or other means), and will continue to expand or die... but that's just me
i think there is always going to be government. ok this movie was terrible but did anyone see "The postman"? it's kinda like that, people will stick to clans and someone will think he has big nuts and try to be the ruller until the government comes back. i honestly dont think it will get that big where it will overthrow the government
remember that show "Jericho" on CBS, ran for like a season, thats kind of what im going on
I can't believe you just referenced "The Postman!!" While not a great movie, I thought the idea was great, and that's exactly what I picture happening to America. granted, in a much less Hollywood, Costner style.
yes dude fuck, the idea for the most was amazing, just costner drawed it out for 3 hours trying to make another robin hood or dances with wolves. but that movie is a prime example of the aftermath.
So, I'm guessing not many people have been thinking long term survival...

My plan is to head as far North as possible. Zombies freeze, so if I can get situated somewhere with a nice, deep winter, that would allow a month or two of fairly unrestricted movement. Assuming I was with a group of survivors, I'd try and find a gated community with good natural defenses (ie ravines, cliffs) and fortify the perimeter. Use the winter months for building defenses and stocking supplies, than hunker down during the warm weather. I figure each season we could spread the defensive perimeter further while clearing areas of zombies.
That's a good plan, but people in large groups farther to the south may not have the resources to get that far north, y'know?
Assuming you live rather far north already, that's great though.
I've always fancied being high in the mountains as a good place to go... High altitudes also make for pretty cold weather, and zombies probably don't have the best balance. Also, if you could get a spot with a good view, set up watches and you can see them coming for miles away. The only problem is a sustainable food sourse, but farms shouldn't be to hard to get going.

That's the only problem i see with your plan: gardening is difficult in the freezing cold, and moving around is also difficult for people.
Do you have a plan for supplies once the looting runs out?
I'm thinking New Hampshire, not the Artic Circle. As I said above, 2-3 months of solid winter is enough to afford a reasonably safe window to do some preparation work for the Spring.
As far as "required reading", don't forget we're here to educate one another.
I'm in a fairly urban area, and I'm actually more concerned about the roads here. more than likely roads would be chocked with cars, the dead and the undead. Even with good pavement, I'm planning on going cross country.
I live in Massachusetts, so yeah, going North for me is feasible. I'm not planning on the Yukon, I'm thinking more like up state New Hampshire. 2-3 months of harsh winter should be enough to give people a workable window.
As far as gardening, I'd be looking to establish a perimeter, again using natural barriers whenever possible so that there was a protected area to farm in the spring. Greenhouses are fairly common up this way, so that's a thought as well.
As far as our Southern brethren, I think you're on the right track with elevation. Mountains would be good. Lacking mountains, again I'd look for an area that offers natural defenses.
there will be no survivors...
Im in arkansas that means plenty of furtile ground and a teprate climate (cept evry 20 years or so big ice storm) and also i would (hopefully) have a few survivors with me id probably try and set up a small community then take 5 others with us and set another one up and so on and so forth untill we have a bunch of little communitys all geting water food and defended and when thay expanded thay would cross paths soon enought to form into one big city and id be able to move state to state contry to country do ing the same thing over and over again and any zombies we find well thay might as will lay down and die now caus thayr gonna be part of the food chain the very bottem.
