I want to be able to direct films of the "zombie" nature like my hero (and your's too!) G.A.R.
What i'm asking here is what's best when it comes to Guns in movies.
Should i get fake, molded guns, realistic replicas, or the real deal with blank ammo?

That's awesome. I hope it works out for you. If you need help with special FX or some editing work, shoot me a message... I'll be glad to help. (call it a freebie)
WHOA WHOA WHOA.. to technical.

Okay if your editing on a computer you can add the muzzle flash and smoke in with almost any program for movie making.

squibs are easy... fire craker...fake blood filled condom.. done.

even easier and much MUCH gorier way.........

see Full metal jacket.. when PILE,(HEHE) BLOWS HIS BRAINS OUT.. SIMPLE AS HELL EFFECT.

tAKE A GRADEN HOSE fill with fake blood.. some orange sponge stuff like the ones you get anywhere for doing dishes. some little bits of ripped up toilet paper.. and more fake blood. stuff that crapp end the end of the tube and have the other end leading down the actors back or something so it can't been seen on camera. then for the bullet hit.. have someone offscreen blow real hard into the other end of the hose and ALL that blood and shit comes flying out... so cheap and SO much more realistic than all that complicates crap..

anything else.. I've done FX for 15 horror movies all of them have been no budget. so I am the GOD of good cheap effects
That may be so, but if you have the tools, use 'em.

In Adobe After Effects, you can get more realistic than in most other programs, though.... that's why it's my personal favorite.

I guess there's no right or wrong way... It's personal preference, I guess. Yes, squibs are easy to make, but do you want to hassel with the actual creation when you could spend more time shooting or even developing the story?

You can learn a lot of cool stuff to use from these guys:
Video Copilot

I purchased this and learned how to do AMAZING things... Scroll down and watch the promo.

You can even learn how to do the fancy stuff like you see in the big movies:

The healing wound
Skin Displacement (like having bugs crawl under your skin)
Blowing someone's head off
Getting hit by a car (would come in handy when running a zombie over)

And more... (another site called creative cow)
Like the Predator Cloaking device....

Still realistic.... still cool....

But if you want a garden hose, by all means.
Well yeah those are good too. But if you don't have a decent computer with alot of memory and just have an old video camera from the early 90's and want gore nothing beats the old Kyro syrup and red food dye.

little tip though. add penut butter. oils in it keeps the red from staining to bad. and ALWAYS.........ALWAYS!!! bring water to wash down your actors. I can not stress that enough. No one wants to be out in the woods or in a abandoned house covered in sticky drying syrup.. It is not fun.
You can get blank firing replicas, they are used in TV and films. A lot cheaper than a real gun and safer too as the barrels are usually blocked.
Blank firing replicas still require safety just like an actual firearm. Airsofts tend to look good if you get the higher end ones. However you need to use Final Cut or After Effects for the muzzle flash and brass ejecting.
Yes blanks can be just as dangerous. Just look at what happened to Brandon Lee on the set of 'The Crow'.
