What would a zombie do when it encounters a three strand barbed wire fence?

first off do you mean a regular chain link fence topped with bared wire or one made out of just bared wire, cause I've seen both. if it where the later i'd imagine it would keep trying to push through until it either got through or tour its self up so much that it could no longer move.

It would probably tangle itself up in it if it was good and pissed off that it was getting cut.

You stumbled onto one of my possible plans for sealing off areas. Wire/barbed wire could be an amazing tool. Not with wooden stakes but with streetlights.
Weaving wire between the posts can create a fence that is impossible for a zombie to get through:
excuse the basic paint drawing, its just to demonstrate. If you have enough metal wire you can seal off an area around your safehouse. If you leave a gap of six inches between the wires you have essentially a zombie proof wall, you don't need a solid wall just something which will physically stop a zombie and won't break even if pushed by large numbers.

its a good idea except its only as strong as archer points your using. the force of a zombie pushing on the fence or in this case multiple zombies is going to be all on those posts. you can prevent breakage by either using a lot of post placed shallowly. or a few deeply anchored ones reinforced with concrete and preferably right into the bed rock,

disregard i missed the street light thing, still street lights aren't all that strong. i might be wrong here but aren't they just anchored to the the sidewalks by large bolts?

Thats still metal and concrete. It should hold a good while even against a healthy amount.

In the UK street lights are all concrete and steel and sunk into the concrete, cars bounce off them :)

I have strung a fair amount of b-wire in my time. In regards to the OP, a 3 strand fence is for cattle that are not inclined to be unruly. Ones that are rather docile. A zombie could crawl under one with 3 strands easy. Or get tangled and literally fall through it. But a woven wire with b-wire topping it would work as long as the numbers did not put the weight on it enough to snap it. And it was a fence with real wood fence posts, not the metal ones.
But reason I replied here is that while light poles, telephone & power poles etc are certainly strong enough to hold up well, the problem with them is they are so far apart. You'd need to have the wire anchored no more than ten feet apart at least. At the distance most poles are apart, to string it tight enough it would snap ....
Besides, barb wire works because it trains through pain. In war, security fences etc it is a device to slow or impede people. The pain is a deterrent. If a zombie feels no pain, the only effect it would have is temporarily impeding them by tangling them up a bit. Even if you had bona fide concertina wire coiled 10 feet high, they'd eventually get though. Likely same way troops did. First ones to it just fall and lay on it, others walk or crawl on top of them to get across.

Yes I too have a bit of experience with wire obstacles, and concertina, and the crucial thing is the longer an unsupported strand is the weaker it gets. One of the things I have wondered is,"are we supposing a zombie has the ability to crawl under a fence or obstacle. or would it simply attempt to push through in an upright position"? A person just ducks between the strands, but does a zombie have the mental capacity to manage it?
