Seriously though, wouldn't military air superiority pretty much negate an outbreak, should one occur? I am curious as to how that would factor into the suppression of such an event, considering the fact that zombies cannot fly.

Please, do not refer to movies or other fictional media to support any arguments/comments, as I am looking for replies pertaining to the real-world.

Some setbacks would include need for fuel, knowledgeable pilots and in the case of airplane, a usable runway. Helicopters would rock.
I'm just wondering how you are going to make head shots from a plane or even a chopper.
Napalm?
The only thing worse than a zombie is a flaming zombie.
And your gonna burn everything else in the area. Fire has no master, bad stuff.
touche, cluster bombs or flechete rounds
stop trying to be a slacker and get down there and shoot the buggers :P
What I mean is, military air superiority. As in, fighter jets and/or choppers.
The military is used for destroying countries , the people and the infrastructure.
Do you want to destroy your cities and towns as well as survivors? No? Then I wouldn't want to use military air power.
And I still ask, how is a fighter plane going to make headshots? Or are you OK with dismembered heads biting your ankles?
Air power is used to suppress ground threats. In this case, the threat would be zombies, most likely in an urban area, attempting to push out into the countryside, thereby setting an apocalypse scenario into motion.

Would you not be willing to sacrifice the few in order to save the many? Destroying a city is small price to pay for the world's salvation, in my opinion.

As to the headshots bit, there wouldn't be enough left of the zombie's head/face/arms/body to do anything. It'd be mush. Or a steaming pile of slag. If there was anything left functioning, it would be nothing a clean-up crew comprised of even the greenest civilians could not handle.

Also, aircraft are surprisingly precise in their application of firepower, so killing all the survivors/resorting to destroying the city seems slightly extreme to me.
Air power is for use against live targets in an area you don't care about.
Zombies won't be "pushing" any where they are not organised, they stagger around untill they sense some nearby food, chances are that unless they are following a slow moving meal they will never move too far from where they originally rose. The concept of hoards of zeds sweeping across the countryside is against everything that they are..dead.
Ask the thousands of dead innocents in a war zone about the accuracy of air strikes. Propaganda and the reality of it are 2 totally different things.
And do you really trust a guy in a chopper with a 50cal to be able to spot the difference between some one stumbling because they are wounded or shell shocked and a zed? They can't even tell the difference between a video camera and a rocket launcher as we have all ready seen.
Perhaps a flaming zombie is worse then a regular one... but when your in the air you can just fly away. Napalm would devastate!
Thanks for thinking about the survivors on the ground in the area, thanks for burning their homes as well.
