Application of Military Operations in the Z-pocalypse.
What are the benefits/drawbacks of using military forces in the zombie infections? What would you apply/where would you apply it /and how do you think it would turn out? You can use any field(artillery/close air support/special operations/armor/etc.) Be vivid and creative in your own plan to topple the Undead.

As a commander, I would hope I am able to contain, then destroy the infected. My first plan would be something like a fighting withdrawal. I'd employ an economy of force to contain or delay the spread of infection. This force would get priority when it comes to CAS and artillery. Meantime, I would dedicate every resource possible to developing a strong defensive ring. This would include trenches and other obstacles, strong points, etc. The plan would then be for the remnants of my delaying force to fall back, drawing the zombies into positions where we could kill them easily. Obstacles would be designed to slow down and funnel zombies. That way they can be picked off with ease. Once I see a let up in zombie advances, I'd counterattack to finish off the remnants.
I know someone is going to ask about civilians......I would not allocate forces to rescue civilians. Instead, I would drop fliers, and broadcast messages encouraging them to either hide, or make their way to friendly lines. I'd also drop supplies along the way.
If quarantine is impossible, my strategy would be to find a good position, dig-in and try to fend off the zombie attacks. If I'm able to find a steady source of fuel and ammo, I might try to expand my zone. However, IMHO, survival means conserve. And the best way to conserve is not to move a lot.
Unfortunately, I doubt anything would work out that way. Operations will likely be controlled, at least initially, by FEMA and local/state civilian officials. Posse Comitatus would delay the used of the active-duty military. I also think the National Command Authority will be very reluctant to use the regular military in order to preserve appearances and deter aggression from foreign states.
Once the military does get involved, objectives will still be set by politicians. Special Forces would quickly be allocated to protecting politicians, their families, and whoever they think deserves help. Members of Congress and the Senate would place a lot of stress on the White House to protect their district. This would only get worse as resources evaporate.
Then you have to consider the enemy. It will take time for people to understand the zombies. And it'll probably take even longer to devise tactics to deal with the threat.
Odds of success?
IMHO, if we can contain the infection and aggressively seek to eliminate it, chances are very good the living population will survive with minimum impact. However, if the outbreak can't be contained, and the rate of infection is high, mankind's survival will depend on endurance. By that I mean, it might just come down to the living outlasting the undead.

Well a lot of leniency would probably be given to commander in the field, but either way politics would be tossed at the first tip towards defeat by small unit commanders anyway.

You can`t broadcast a message if the mayority of the survivors may not have radio, internet or they are underground, you are going to send them out so they get infected and you got more zeds at your fences, i dont think the outbreak can be "destroyed" at that moment you only think in your survival not going to kill everything you see, you look out for provitions, ammo, high-ground. maybe a fortress and then send out very experienced and armored ops to look out survivors but getting your men in close combat and protecting VIPs would be a waste of men and tactics

The military doesn't have a good track record of being able to adapt to new tactics and enemies. Due to this I would have to say that the vast majority of the armed forces would be decimated. The survivors would be the ones that disobeyed orders and worked with the civilians in the area to create safe zones free of zombies. Other than that there might be a few lucky survivors who escaped the disaster that they will be led into.

Its not the military's adapting that's low, its the logistics of said overhaul to equip the ground force to the situation.

That part of adapting to the situation. No adaption happens unless all groups involved can adapt and thats including the logistics.

That's true. If a centralized force could be organized however, it would be easier to consolidate and re equip ground troops to assist in evacuations and SAR missions in the initial outbreak.

There I agree with you. If the military gets it's act together real fast then I would give it a chance of success but wouldn't put all my eggs in their basket.
