Are any of you actually preparing and if you are...how and why?

I caught a bit of that new show on Discovery "The Colony". It got me wondering. As I was reading some other questions people posted on here, I started wondering more about how people might actually prepare. What if people ended up having to be in a group of strangers if this or some other scenario played out in real life? How many people are seriously training for, what they believe, is inevitable? Have you had serious convos with those you care about or you think might serve as a good ally incase things do start to go down? I know not everyone has taken survival training, I haven't, but has anyone at least thought about if they had to survive? Do you have a pack set and ready to go? Have you thought about what weapons to train with if your not already trained? Where you might go, or how you might make where you are a more secure place?

Most likely, a very common scenario that will occure throughout the world will be those who have never even seen a tent in person let alone been camping. And doubtful that hunting outside of video games was ever a real thought with most of these same people. So if things like this do go down.....are you ready to show some form of leadership and knowledge about what to do and how to organize those who might otherwise be panicing or are just in total shock?

My own personal thoughts are a bit more morbid, only cause my mom and stepfather are both out of shape. My stepfather has diabetes, and my mom, as strong a woman as I know she is, does not handle things well and more than likely will be both in a panic and in shock. I have a brother who is autistic and I have to say: I have no idea how something like that might affect him. We all have different situations when it comes to family and friends. I would like to say that I will stay and protect the ones in my life, as they are my life. Is everyone else prepared to sacrifice and do the same? Would any of you just do what you had to personally do to survive? And the hardest of all questions, because what people believe varies so much: Do any of you in all seriousness believe that what might be coming as a serious possibility?

I'm very curious to see your answers. :o)

People are raised differently Nathan. People have different values and even morals. Priorities are also different. I was raised around guns and hunting and camping and such. I can work on my cars because of the example set by others in my life, Dad, uncles and neighbors. I have a very strong sense of patriotism and of how this nation should be run. I don't believe it is being run the right way at this point in time and hasn't been in a long time. It doesn't matter which party has control. I believe that government at all levels has grown to the point it will self destruct. If that happpens there will be much chaos. If things don't change soon there will be troubles. You've seen people riot in the streets when their sports team has won a big game. That's no reason to go on a spree of destruction and assault. The LA riots after the Rodney King incident. Google it if you're too young to remember. Katrina was a debacle because you had local governement at odds with federal government and the local governement couldn't get over their issues in time to help.

Is there going to be a Zpoc? I highly doubt it. Is there going to be other localized problems. I believe so. Even if nothing happens it's better to put forth some effort to prepare yourself then to rely on a government that sees you as a statistic.

If your parents aren't prepared there are stil things you can do. Even if you don't have your own money to purchase items you can ask them questions. get them thinking. "Hey mom is there a chance we could get hit by a hurricane like Katrina?" "Dad have you ever been without electric for a long period of time?" "Tell me what it was like watching the LA riots in the early 90s!" "What if stuff like that happened here?" You plant the seed.
Thank you for your response. I totally agree with you. The country is definately not going in the right direction and I'm sure we'll be invaded by other countries joining forces against us before the living dead could even pose any type of issues that would have Joe Public take notice. Preparedness in these times is always a good thing. Not just for the things that a group thinks could happen, like a Zpoc, but things that are much more likely. You seem like you'll be all set when things actually start going do, but I'm just wondering about all the others who are not quite so prepared. Would people be part of the riots or just stay home and protect their own? Someone on here actually posted something about maybe having a meeting place for this group if things should go down. Though I thought it a bad idea to try to meet somewhere that for one might be totally out of the way and also for people you barely know. I can understand why he would want that. Group numbers of like minded people sounds like a great idea on paper, but of course there are flaws to this idea.

I'm getting older and growing up I always believed in a WW3 accuring at some point. I was even thinking at one time when I was in my late teens, of seeking out and joining a local militia, not now of course, but when I was younger I was seriously thinking about it. Now I'm stepping up a bit more on a personal level. Getting myself into shape. Started my martial arts training again. Getting a new bow and going to go out shooting every chance I get.

I hope everyone else is starting to think of and consider how fragile times like these truly are. If everyone just stops and looks at all thats happened. Tons of mass kills within the first few months of this year in our own country. Tensions between other countries who even now can not be trusted. And even as you mentioned about the riots. I hear things are supposed to get worse and be that way for awhile before we even really start returning to the greatest nation on the planet, as I believe we are.

Its going to be interesting to see what happens in the near future.
I don't know about our nation being invaded. I don't think anyone has the nerve or the means to do that. I believe there will be segregated areas where things will get bad. Most will be in urban areas. We all have to be prepared in one way or another.
I just meant that I believe an invasion from another country to be more likely than a Zpoc. If it could happen is an entirly different convo. lol
Ok
I couldn't have said it any better, Prime. I totally agree. I live in earthquake country so the question isn't "if?", its "when?" I was around for the 89 quake. Thankfully we only went 24 hours without basic services: water and electricity. The old saying was "Prepare for 72 hours without basic services". In the wake of Katrina and the current state of government, I've increased it to seven days minimum in the event of another major quake.

I remember the LA riots. My girlfriend's father is a very conservative Korean-American, a former serviceman, and a patriot. A few weeks ago I jokingly said, "Your dad is so hardcore I wouldn't be surprised to see him in old footage from the riots." Turns out I was right. His best friend was the owner or manager of a grocery store. Both of them drove out to the store to defend it from the looting vultures.

I think its the responsibility of everyone to ensure the safety and well-being of not only themselves but their loved ones. Prepare now, not later. This brings up a subject I feel very strongly about: looting. There are two kinds of looters: those caught unprepared and those that are opportunistic vultures. There are no excuses for it. If you find yourself in need of something barter for it.

Having rambled on long enough, the "Safe House" videos I've uploaded actually show my earthquake and general emergency kits and supplies. My next investment is for more long term subsistence: solar panels.
Solar panels are good for charging stuff. Unless you are in the sun belt I wouldn't count on them to run many things. Maybe a wind and solar hybrid system. You can do well with a gas generator for short terms. At least run the heat and blower and water pump. If you're going to be long term without power you need to look at hydro, solar and wind.

My biggest thing initially will be to protect my family and keep what is ours. We can survive without certain comforts if needed.
