I think older. Newer ones can jam easily, plus we know for certain the older one's power and durability.

Just out of curiousity who are you calling a moron?
i think its more of an angst rant than pointing someone out as a moron....
like someone said, use what you know, not what others or games suggest in disposing a zed. not even your dream gun would be worth it while you may oggle it's awesomeness on the wall. for me, for example, I would like to get my hands on a cheap but sturdy replica warhammer which would not only act as a basing weapon but as a tool as well.

gun wise: i'm a historical gun nut so I would prefer to the oldies than the modern crap and non of you CODers will stop me from using a lever action on the dead.

{ahem} sorry about that...I just hate it when people don't think about their choice of guns; but yeah, an oldie can jam, dirty, etc etc; yes, but after you've been around it, held it, fired it, cleaned it, field stripped it and such, you can live and fight around it's weaknesses and quirks. a gun has it's own "personality" too ya know?

even then, push came to shove, and I was in the thick of it, I would use whatever motherfuckin' prop/pan/m4 I can get my hands on just to make sure I walk away from the fight. even If I hate a modern gun with a passion I'll bite my lip and use it to ensure my survival.

now, like I said, you use what your familiar with, not what you dream for or others suggest or games recommend.
This is actually an interesting question, for my part I believe certain newer weapons to be better, such as the FN SCAR series, the are almost as reliable as an AK, but with modern ergonomics and accuracy. Max Brooks makes an argument for WWII weapons because they are tough and built for hand-to-hand combat, but most are heavy and some are in bad condition, and most modern weapons still come with bayonet lugs.
i really cant see eye to eye with a lot of Max Brooks weapon choices and desires...he still thinks shotguns are not reliable and wonders why the military keeps wanting to upgrade weapons to replace the old ones and he still thinks like an emo on Katanas...thats why i still don't read his books most of the time
an ak47 can be cleaned into working order with some water and a knotted shoe string
Well, the advantage of a machete its that never run out of bullets.

mmm an ak-74 its too loudest... do u think that? houndreds of zombis hear that noise and they run like bitchies to bit u... i think than the best weapon is a tmp silenced... or better... a snipe rifle silenced .... a AWP i think xD

i m sory if u dont understand me so much... its because than i m from argentina and mi english is bad ...

It really depends on the weapons being compared.  An M1 Garand is powerful, reliable, and pretty damn durable, but it's also heavy, limited in capacity, and hard to control during rapid fire.  I would take the newer M14 over it, just as I would take the SCAR-H over the M14.  Some weapons are better than their predecessors, some are not.  The best weapon is one that you feel is the best compromise between ergonomics, mag capacity, durability, reliability, spare parts comonality, and your experiance with it.

One thing the older rifles have over newer ones is the bayonet.  While it is true that M4s still have a bayonet lug, considering how light they are, and how the upper receiver wobbles on most of them, I would not want to use it for bayonet fighting.  An M16 would be ok, but an M14, FAL, or another, older rifle would be my preference there.

What are you defining as older? I mean I have modern weapons, and some older ones as well. I have a LWRC m6-g AR15. Its gas piston instead of gas impingment. Ive fired thousands of rounds through it, and never had an issue with it. As far as jamming goes, thats going to happen with any weapon. No matter how old a weapon and reliable a weapons system is eventually its going to break down. I have several pistols that all polymer bodies, and they are all very reliable. I have a 870HD that Ive reworked with tactical upgrades that is as reliable as you can get from a shotgun, it occassionally jams. Some of that can be dealt with using action upgrades to make a better ejection and cycle.

I guess that depends on what your idea of surviving during a zpoc is. I personally won't be going around looking for zeds to kill. I will be killing them if I have to, and have no option to retreat. The idea of killing them to try to wipe them out is both useless and stupid. If I need something thats going to reach out over 50-100 yards I have obviously failed in my plan to stay away from. Modern AR15's even with shorter barrels are good well over 100 yards anyways. My AR has a 14" barrel, and a 2 inch muzzle break on it. I have made shots at the range at 400+ yards with it, so Im pretty sure Im good there. Ive made shots with my AK and its milled barrel at 400+ as well, so Im fairly comfortable with either one of them. Don't get me wrong I have owned, and shot mosin nagants. However, their very long and cumbersome to carry. This is the one thing I will say about older weapons versus newer ones. Older weapons were built a little more rugged.....however their parts aren't as easy to come by and there for will make them more of a liability during a apocalypse. If my AR breaks down I know that I break into any locked abandoned gun store and find all the parts I need to fix my firearm even if all the guns are taken. There will still be parts in those gun stores, because the average shooter is almost clueless when it comes to work and maintaineance.

No matter what gun I carry, I would always have an AK-47 with me at all times. If all else fails, an AK-47 won't.
