I have to agree with Prime here, "precision" is very nice, but the shotgun has every bit as much use in the z-poc.

Rifle. Higher rate of fire, larger magazine size, greater distance.

rifle, i'm not for close range, i'd rather pick targets off from a distance.
also good against an attacking group- shoot them before they can shoot you,
good for hunting,
ammo is smaller
plenty of reloading supplies around,
much lower recoil, easier to keep rifle on target for followup shots, or just shooting a chain of targets one after the other
faster to reload- with exception of the saiga 12, shotguns uses a tube magazines that has to be reloaded one shell at a time. in most rifles you can just switch magazines or charge the magazine with a clip. its very fast.
deeper penetration, less blood splatter, less gore overall, much, much much more range.
i don't like AR15 type rifles. ideally i'd have like a mosin nagant or similar. AK maybe, but unlikely, I like real traditional rifles, not the modern "assault rifle" pattern. the modern assault rifle pattern is best fro close range but often inadequate fro longer ranges- the ranges I'll be often shooting from.

I will have both in a Z poc but if I had to pic 1...being in cali id pic a shotgun. Simply becuase of ammo capabilites it can be just as accurate as a rifle...you can put in a slug and get head shots at 100 yards or put in sum 00 buck and blow a zombie to bits at 25 yards...not to mention u can use the bird shot for hunting animals for food, also bean bag and tazer rounds for less lethal options (for humans) as well as even frag grenade rounds. So for me its shotgun hands down. It can do everyting you need it to do in a zpoc...Defend you from close up and at long ranges, It can open doors and blow away smaller obsticales and another important factor is it can hunt for you buy getting you birds and other small game. So just in that 1 platform you have just about everything u need. So if you could only have 1 gun in my opinion a shotgun best covers all the roles a firearm would need to play during any Apoc. Also A 12 gauge rifled slug will do more balistic damage than most any other rifle because of the velocity and size of the actual projectile the only negative aspect in my opinion is recoil...its definately not for every1 but with a little training very manageable

amen to that maybe like a Mosin Nagant M44 they have a permenent bayonette and are short for close encounters of the dead kind but are a rifle that can reach out, and ammos not too expensive.
but for some reason my dads M44 weighs more than my M91/30

I would have to agree i have a lot of hunting rifles but my 12ga is a crowed stopper the mini 14 i have is nice but a scatter gun would be more forgiving to make a head shot in a panic situation.Pro marksmen cant make head shots on moving targets while running backwards.

The shotgun is easy to learn the bare basics but to use it to its full potential I always have to be thinking. The instructor's mantra is "If you're not shooting, you're reloading." The technique is different if my mag tube is full, round in the chamber to switch to a slug compared to if I fired one shot. If I need two slugs, again, the technique is different if I'm full, fired once, or twice. And the model of shotgun to do these drills is different: Remington 870, Mossberg 590, and Benelli. The philosophy and techniques are always changing, too. Some of the drills I use in my video submissions here are now obsolete. Practice, practice, practice.

The biggest drawbacks to shotguns are their high recoil, ammo capacity, and range.
If you're shooting any kind of shot, the farther away you are from the target, the wider the spread and the slower the pellets are going. With #00 buck past 50 yards, there's no way of knowing if you'll do enough damage to be effective.
Most tube-mag shotguns can only hold 7 or 8 rounds, and when it's time to reload, they have to be fed one at a time. Even the mag-fed Saiga only holds about 10 rounds and the mags are large and heavy.
I'd rather have a mil-spec semi-auto AR. Accuracy is enough, more ammo can be carried and a 30-round mag can be swapped out in about 1 second.Cheers.

MB500SP in hand, and when needed , drop the shotgun and grab the rifle on my back. I'm not going too choose one or the other, mainly because (i did not put good hard earned money into either, too leave behind) but mostly because prime stated, they are tools, and can serve different purposes. If i can avoid storming a house or tight corridor with a rifle i will. Over penetration and ricochets are not fun when friendlies are near. Guess it's all on the situation, but if you sat me down, slapped me around a bit and MADE me choose, I'd choose rifle, just more comfortable with rifles over any shotgun.
