I thought this was an interesting thought. Obviously your group will end up harboring children, either immediately if you have kids at home, or somewhere down the road you will find orphans, probably between the ages of 6 to 13 is the age group I'm thinking of. Unless you have a high adult to child ratio, there is no way you can be 100% observant 100% of the time. That being the case, would you give these kids a means to defend themselves in case something got by the adults? Do you think you could trust today's average child with a deadly weapon to be able to use it effectively without injuring him/herself or those around them? I would hazard a guess that most kids today would be physically unable to strike hard enough to cause a killing blow with an edged weapon, if they even possessed the courage to react in time to save their own life. But i would also be uneasy about handing a child a loaded firearm, unless they proved to me they could handle it safely and responsibly. But you cant leave them defenseless, can you? Would it do more harm than good? Your thoughts?

Assuming the outbreak becomes an apocalypse, then absolutely.
Surely.... I remember when I was working in some 7 eleven shop in the suburbs and that one night (at about ten o'clock when it's almost closing time and rainy, I accidently almost kill a guy with an umbrella cause he came beside that rear door and open it without permission and makes me very shocked - I almost kill my ex-boyfriend that night. Luckily, he's ok - only to have his forehead bleeding cause I hit him so hard for about 3 times.... Absolutely, must armed everbody that still breathing, alive and well - at all ages !
Dont arm the children ... Teach them how to run and survive without arming them...
I would use them as an extra set of eyes, have two of them in an observation post at once to provide early warning, they would have the means to notify the adults should something happen. During the day however the children would remain on the inside of the group at all times.

There would be enough things surrounding the children to damage their minds, I wouldnt want them to have a firearm and have something bad happen, should they harm someone that could effect them in a very negative way. I would treat the children as if the outbreak were only temporary, giving only minor tasks.
I say teach them how to survive teach them that a sharp mind wins at the end, also kids dont realy know what they are getting into i say they should help as in gathering food ect. but letting them fight would be out of the question.
ABSOLUTELY!

I've already started training my 11 and 8 year old nephews, The younger is already crackshot with my 22lr

They know the plan if the town goes, they already live on the 6th floor of a secure apartment building, they know exactly what to do and where to go.
I learned to shoot and reload when I was 5 or 6. I had respect for the guns and what can be done with them. It would depend on the child if I would arm them or not. Some can't handle the responsibility in their teens.
There are some that cant handle it as adults too...I guess this is where natural selection kicks in.
Some adults as well, idiots shooting each other in the streets. Giving firearms in general a bad rap, giving the head hancho's the impression that the moral majority can't handle the responsibility of owning a weapon without shooting their neighbor. I agree with Prime Predator here, given the child and their maturity level.
i'm gunna teach every kid i find or have in my group how to do everything including firearms what happens if all the adults die or if that kid ends up saving your ass because you taught him how to shoot
I wouldn't trust most of the kids I know with guns. I don't think any of them have any experience with guns beyond maybe a weekend hunting with grandpa. most of them would probably be too stressed during an attack to use the weapons.
at the beginning of the outbreak i would be pretty hesitant to arm the children, however as time went on and they adjusted more to what was going on and became aware of what they would need to do to help the group and survive i would begin training them with weapons.

I emphasize training, under no means would i leave them alone with the weapon until they'd proven themselves compentent and trustworthy with it.
