I thought this was an interesting thought. Obviously your group will end up harboring children, either immediately if you have kids at home, or somewhere down the road you will find orphans, probably between the ages of 6 to 13 is the age group I'm thinking of. Unless you have a high adult to child ratio, there is no way you can be 100% observant 100% of the time. That being the case, would you give these kids a means to defend themselves in case something got by the adults? Do you think you could trust today's average child with a deadly weapon to be able to use it effectively without injuring him/herself or those around them? I would hazard a guess that most kids today would be physically unable to strike hard enough to cause a killing blow with an edged weapon, if they even possessed the courage to react in time to save their own life. But i would also be uneasy about handing a child a loaded firearm, unless they proved to me they could handle it safely and responsibly. But you cant leave them defenseless, can you? Would it do more harm than good? Your thoughts?

most texas kids already know gun safety and how to shoot. i know very few people that weren't raised at a young age to both respect and appreciate firearms. so to me this question isn't really a debate. i was hunting with my father and his group when i was 7. brother was the same. majority of friends were done the same way right around that age. if you can be trusted to not shoot your comrades when a pheasant you have no idea is there surprises you, then zombies aren't going to be an issue.
Take a look at ANY third world $hithole - children are frequently armed by local factions, militias and other groups, usually with the ubiquitous AK47, which is by any account, a deadly weapon. The reason the AK is SO popular is that it was designed with extreme simplicity of use and maintenance... even a child can do it.

So the answer to your question is simple - if they're at least as sharp as the unwashed, uneducated whelps of thrid world countries, then YES then can be armed. The real question is, are our (American) spoiled, self-indulgent, unmotivated, Emo youth that sharp?
i would say that as the apocalypse progresses the children that have survived are going to be reliable enough to use weapons we wouldnt have to treat them like they are completely innocent because you know they have done as much as you have. Just like anyone that survives for a long time during the apocalypse they arent going to be unreliable in a rough situation
