I've been watching a lot of those grand-scale war-themed movies lately, and they've got me wondering; Would practiced maneuvers/ positions such as the wedge and the phalanx work against the walking dead? If these tactics can be used against the living (who are trained to dodge and evade damage btw), wouldn't they be even more efficient in killing the reckless, berserker hordes of the undead? Also, these soldiers would be armored; I mean, if it can protect from steel, wouldn't it be able to protect from claws and teeth? I know for a fact that zombies would have a hard time biting through: medieval armor, samurai plating, gimp suits, etc.

What do YOU think the pro's and con's would be?

I like your style lmao
Interesting thought, but my main problem is with how zombies attack. I don't think there will be too many instances where a flow of zombies will come at you while you are protected and aware; I think they are more likely to just attack when we ar walking around, in small, unorganize groups. Also, they would be attackin from all directions.

That being said, were they to come straght at us in organized flows while we were expecting them, many medieval defenses would work well.
I realize now I had the description in the wrong part. I meant to say that the zombies would be in small, unorganized groups. Not the humans.
There are many instances in history where small, organized groups have waged battle against seemingly insurmountable (yet, unorganized) odds, and have emerged victorious.
Heaavy armor and cardio don't mix. I'd rather be lite for flight. Besides, once 2 or 3 zeds knock you over, then what? Dog paddle the hell outta there? lol
Roll to your knees and stick em, I fight in armor regularly... it's alot easier than you think.
well the soldiers in a sset of knights armour would have a hard time moving if they fall theyre screwd
Sorry mate, blatant urban legand there, armor is lighter than you think and is quite well distributed in it's weight, especially plate armor which i assume is what your talking about.
While I believe in armor for fighting zeds, plate armor is a little to heavy and cumbersome to be effective, what's more large battlefield formations would be ineffective for fighting zeds because the rely on killing enough men for the opposite formation to brake, zeds don't break, they will keep coming until you fold. Not to menchion that if men started to get bit it would be impossible of getting them out and they would run the risk of changing in formation.
Take the Battle at Thermopylae the famous 300 Spartans battle so well known in films, and change zombies for Persians. If the Spartans held their line and hundreds or thousands of zombies attacked, zombie bodies would soon pile up and build a barrier around the Spartans either slowing down the zombies or stopping them all together. As long as they were George Romero type zombies they can't climb. Then as long as no Spartan was bit, they probably could hold the line without fear of other Spartans changing sides due to infection. The problem is relieving the Spartans in the front of the formation because no matter how fit they were they would soon tire out from swinging swords and jabbing spears with zombies pushing against sheids non stop, which I'm sure they were trained to do. Archers of course run out of arrows, and swords get dull, and spears break after hundreds of strikes against bone. But the Spartans were fit and trained in tactics, zombies are neither, and since zombie bodies pile up that might save them.
A samurai with plating and a sword would do good until he begins to tire out, and his blade starts to dull, how many times can a human swing a sword and not tire? Warriors in chain mail would have better protection and be lighter than a knight in full armor which weighed between 40 and 80 lbs again making it hard to fight for long periods of time.
Watch any MMA fight or boxing match and see how fast the fighters get tired after fighting full force for only two or three rounds, now put armor on him give him a heavy sword, and throw 50-100 zombies his way every 20 minutes.
Zombies in mass numbers will wear down any warrior using medieval armor or weapons just because of the shire weight and physical demands placed on the human body.

Your point on getting tired 100% correct... as for your statistics on the armor?... how many video games have you played? Have you ever worn Plate or chain? I've worn both and Chain is vasty heavier, just the Haubrek outweighs both my and my dads armor put together.

Also a greatsword is heavy... a hand and a hlf swor or broad sword... is actually lighter than a Katana.

As for a Samurai sword getting dull? if it's well made it will be years before that happens.

against a horde?... no i wouldn't use medieval tactics... i would run, when sweeping streets? yes i would.

But a more early gunpowder style warfair would be far more effective than Medieval style, simply because they incorperate the use of guns as support weapons for pike walls and the like.

The advantage Bows and the like have over guns however, is retreivable ammunition that is also far easier to make.
And early gunpowder tactics included Guns, bows and crossbows.
I cant believe I've read all this when I should have been running. Thats 5 minutes less I have to live!
