I've been watching a lot of those grand-scale war-themed movies lately, and they've got me wondering; Would practiced maneuvers/ positions such as the wedge and the phalanx work against the walking dead? If these tactics can be used against the living (who are trained to dodge and evade damage btw), wouldn't they be even more efficient in killing the reckless, berserker hordes of the undead? Also, these soldiers would be armored; I mean, if it can protect from steel, wouldn't it be able to protect from claws and teeth? I know for a fact that zombies would have a hard time biting through: medieval armor, samurai plating, gimp suits, etc.

What do YOU think the pro's and con's would be?

they did have gunpowder in the later middle ages and primitive guns/cannons
Human teeth aren't really very well made for biting, nor is the shape of our mouths. You don't need metal to stop teeth. Go grab a decent leather jacket, and I don't mean a pissy designer one and try and bite through it, you cant, I've had a German Shepherd latch onto my arm in my bike jacket and it's teeth didn't penetrate the leather, I was bruised but the skin wasn't broken. Leather is light (ish) flexible and long wearing. You can also have pockets in leather, try that in armor!
Tactics really only need to be simple against zeds, they aren't going to out think you. The best tactic is to be somewhere they can't get to. If there are hoards of zeds , get the hell out of there, you can't win against them before you get tired.
I think armoured knights, on armored horses would be formidable especially with maces. a charge against a group of zeds woud be devastating.
On foot i think chainmail would be more sensible as visibility is better, heavy though.
Modern day kevlar clothing is much lighter.
Just wondering where you are going to get horse armor? In fact any armor? The real thing isn't cheap and unless you have it before z-day you won't be finding it at the local store.
I made mine =3
thats why i suggest kevlar. yeah, you wouldnt have a castle with a stable to fall back too. nor would you be able to maintain a horse, shoes/feed etc.
z-day during medieval times would have been cool though.
this dog looks cool

Not if their facing a horde. They would be hit on all side and the zombies would find a way past the armor after a few mins.
Kevlar biker suit, its head to toe complete protection, its slash, fire, water and bite proof and with a full face helmet its total protection, you can lay in the middle of a mob till you get bored :D
I think that at that point crushing damage might be more of an issue.
Also remember that if they are grabbing at you they might find a seam or something in your suit and pull and also they can pull you apart even if they can't get at you to bite you.
I think the real danger with zombies is the shear number of them. If you'r fighting 5 to 10 of them there's no problem dodging them and bashing some skulls, some light armor would be nice just in case. When you're dealing with more then 10, it's best to just run. When a horde of a million plus come through your town, you better just hide, be quite, and hope some idiot shoots a gun in the distance to attract them away from your position. their moans are like a wave that can travel hundreds of miles. So if you're heard by one, it's already over. I think the best armor option is a armored Hum V, off road truck, or tank and just drive around crushing crowds of them, if you have the gas that is. Otherwise if your talking about a offensive attack, you better have a army of millions. Stay hidden and stay safe my friends.
Pro's-
As I've seen multiple times teeth cannot and will never be able to penetrate steel. And as most said it would be cumbersome, as far as i know only the key figures on the battle field will be decked out head to toe in steel plates. Others would have leather reinforced with chain-mail/scale-mail. Which making the bulk of your forces ambidextrous. And being a sardine in a can also has its up's. If your inside a shell of steel and your going down, 1 of 2 things can happen...
1. Wait there being fondled yet unharmed until a comrade comes to your aid
2. You pull some hot shit moves and get up yourself

Weapons- Most designed to bash through solid metal and deal a killing blow ( morning star, maces, etc etc)
Pikes and halberds designed to go on the offense from afar
Spiked shield's for an amazing defense and offense piece

And Castles Castles Castles, and oh did i mention catapults?

Con's-
Archer barrages would only be maybe 25% effective, the chance of scoring a killing blow is slim to none.
As well as flame arrows wouldn't be the best idea..
Shield Wall & Pike tactics would only work until your front-line men become fatigued.

I've heard someone mention about infection in the bulk, that would be no good.
And what about the rats and ravens that feast on the living undead?..

IMO, if I were the king of the castle, upon the scouts info of the walking dead advances I'd send for men to dig 10-15ft deep trench's around the front gates. Filled with flammable substances with only a minor choke point in the middle. Bottle-necking the horde while the rest fall in and burn :P
