me i think going in the swiss alp's is the place to be i went there in 2009 and it would be amazingly easy to fortify most places as alot of places are up moutians and near trees for fuel and perfect weather during the summer to grow and stock pile food and in the winter due to zombies already being dead and have no warm blood so making them cool blooded they would freaze or become so slow  u could hack their heads of with a pen knife and dont worry since its swisserland theirs pleanty of swiss army knifes to go around

Looks to be some kind of oil or natural gas rig with add-ons.
wen me and my buddies would train we would use paint ball guns,so we built foxwholes on my land which is 20 miles to the closest town,we built them on a large hill over looking the valleys, then we thaut since we already have the foxwholes in a curcle we should conjoun then all to make a bunkerthat has protection of a 360 degrees killzone where you can see people coming up to 400 yards away is easaly houses up to 17 people, it has a barricks, storige room and the outside ring of foxholes its all undergound hard to see at a distance and in the center there is an old stormshelter turned into a kittchen and could be used as a bomb shelter.as weve gotten older we have inproved the bunker, its defenses and developed a group called UNIT 33 we requier our members to store canned goods ammo and water,we must have a high powerd rifle and a shotgun, our plan is to bring our gear to the bunker if anything happens and live there until everything blows over, although we are training for if a civil war happens or amarica is attacked if this happens we will do the same thing,we have ranks and duties and we function like an actual unit...if any are intrested in joining UNIT 33 or have any questions contact me
We have mountains in the US that would be just as good as Switzerland. Since planes didn't fly for days after 9/11, I doubt they'll be flying during an Zpoc or Apoc.

I'd stay right where I am. I live 100% off grid using solar and wind, no running water at the moment, but I do have septic in. Refrigeration is spotty, so we have learned not to depend on it, started dehydrating my own food and once I have the wood burning cook stove up and running, I'll start canning too. Trying to get off propane so that it is one less thing to have to depend on from the outside.

If I needed to go up into the mountains, I can survive with just my Jeep loaded up and be on the move.

Having a stronghold is good only when you know how to manage it and work it to your advantage. Being holed up in a big fort isn't going to help if you have thought out exit routes, alternative plans for food, water and fuel, and how to keep your group from killing each other.
I do not think it is the "best" overall, but it would be the best I could do in under an hour. I work in a factory type building. We make bottles, so our warehouse is filled with boxes of two things: empty bottles and plastic pellets. The walls are brick. There are 2 man doors and 2 garage doors. I would use the forklift to move pallets of plastic in front of the doors, each weighs between 1700-2200lbs and can be stacked 3 high. Once the perimeter is secure, I would have everyone fill as many bottles with water as possible. We are talking some unfathomable amount, we would probably be filling and capping up until the water shut off. I would then move all of the empty racks to one wall and form essentially a three level-1ft/6ft/12ft-area for us to stay up above to sleep. We would have to depend on the outside for food is the major issue. We have soil that we keep in there for our yard work, but the roof is not an option so maybe indoor farming if we could get seeds and rig up lighting. There is space for sure.
I am assuming that you make plastic bottles. You could cut the tops off the bottles to use for potting plants. If you have any windows, you can put the seed containers near the windows and probably get some growth. Look for fast growing veggies like lettuce and spinach and sprouts - radish sprouts are good. If you have dirt, start a worm farm - not only can you use the casing for your garden, but they get rid of any waste you may have and if need be, they are a good source of protein. If you could get your hands on some chickens, they double as chicken feed + chickens will also eat waste.

Other uses for the water bottles - thermo solar heat (again, if you have windows), funnels, bowls, scoops, individual toilets (cut off tops),leg, shin, and arm guards (cut to custom fit), day packs, etc.

I am sure you could rig up some kind of die to make rigid plastic bars using the plastic pellets to use as weapons, addtional barricade materials, shields, etc.

I like the stacking pallets to sleep on idea. Very cool.
There are only a few windows and they are higher than we would have access too, but we have all sorts of extra lights we keep in there for replacing the ones in the factory. Along with a few thousand pounds of soil. I am not sure what sort of lights work for planting, so that's something to look into.

Depending on how many people there were, we could use the same principles to seal off the factory at the other end of the lot too. It has the machinery for molding in addition to a full machine shop with CNC and rapid prototyping capabilities. We have a few welders and all sorts of tools that can double as melee weapons. I always wanted to use some of the polycarbonate sheet to make a riot shield, we could probably make a dozen easily. The location is a little bit back from the main drag, in a lightly occupied township, but I would not want to cut one group off from the other even if it is just 100yds from the factory to the warehouse. At some point (probably when power goes down for good) we would all fall back into the warehouse since the machines would do us no good.
Don't discount the machines just because you have no power - they can be modified into hand crank generators, weapons parts, etc. You could also make solar tubes out of reflective metal to hang down from the windows to 10 feet above ground level inside to grow your garden.
When I was in Cali, the plan was to bunker down the house temporarily (two story house with a particularly flimsy staircase) and then make a move to my dad's paper factory. The huge paper rolls provide instant fortification, the doors to the warehouse are all safety doors and there are no windows that need defending.Oh, I almost forgot the double wall with the chain link are barbed wire fence. From there, we would have run a staging area to prepare for the 100+ journey to a private retreat that already has many defensible buildings, rugged terrain, several valleys that could be converted into farm land, natural springs, and wall plus gate in front of the entrance into the main valley.
Unfortunately I'm not in Cali, I'm in Texas. I'm by myself in a new city and if the SHTF, I am so SOL. Probably be one of the first ones down. Oh well. Just give me one clean shot right to the noggin. I'd thank you if I wasn't trying to eat your brains.
Being in a new town should not diminish your survival odds unless you give up, You just need to think things through fast. If you house is not defendable dont go running to Walmart, the Gun store, Hospitals or anywhere else there might be a lot of people cuz if there's a huge crowd there all ready most likely one of them's infected already. I truly do believe that zombies will swarm through cities and converge where known survivors are hiding. In any zombie movie survivors that zombies corner into a building only attracts more zombies in a city these places will attract hundreds if not thousands of zombies leaving some parts of the cities vacant you have to survive in those areas the zombies already swarmed through and stay away from zombie populations and defiantly dont attract attention to yourself by using firearms.
You need to plan your escape route, supplies and vehicle then. I'd also start scouting around your immediate area as to what would make a good alternative fortress if you had to hole up in your city for any time period. You could even have a mini-storage unit filled with your supplies, etc if you are an apartment dweller.

At least in TX you'll have plenty of access to guns and ammo. Texans like their guns - I know, we have plenty of Texan transplants here in SoCo.
Part of my plan is to load up on more ammo where ever I can. The smaller gun shops and sporting good stores that are not national or regional franchises have to get there ammo and guns from a central distributor. Google search Local guns and ammo distributors for you state, city or county. While everyone else is fighting over the guns and ammo at the Bass Pro or Guns R Us you can find what you need at a non-descript warehouse away from the crowds. I know right where the one in my area is and have been there on occasion. These places are not open to the public. They are distribution hubs. You won't be able to tell them from any other warehouse. Locate you regional Wal Mart Distribution Center. XD....
I just ordered .22's online and they deliver to my doorstep - at discount prices - how can you beat that?
