Can you swing a sword? As in hit its neck while its bobbing around lunging at you? If you absolutly must go melee, use a blunt instrument and a mask...yeah the idea of lopping a zeds head off sounds cool, but you have to aim it and its brain is still intact so it can still bite your ankles....go for a heavy melee thing, a good old warmace if you have to (think:http://www.medieval-weaponry.co.uk/acatalog/DX645Close.jpg) you dont have to aim aswell, you pulp its head (great for motivation haha) AND you destroy the brain...but a mask is needed, dont want spurty blood going in your mouth or eyes=infection
I didn't see you reply before i posted but, hell yeah! A morning star would be a perfect weapon for melee combat.
If i had a choice, more so if i could ever find an authentic Pike, I'd totally go for that!
Keep em at a distance, one end for melee bash and the other for a killing thrust :D
Yeah i thought a pike or polearm at first, but thought they were more stabby, and bigger and more cumbersom to use, but you post is right, anything heavy and blunt would split its head open like a melon...might be because i'm english and hence have no guns just lying around like the states does, i've come to think i'd prefer a heavy blunt object more relyable, i havnt had any experiance with guns so i'm more likly to injure myself and i'd be a terrible shot.
Your very right, it would be a no-go in close quarters.
Then again swords take immense skill to use, plus the fatigue factor. Slashing through human bone is not an easy task. As well as finding an authentic would be like finding a needle in a haystack in a post apocalyptic world.

My SDW's would be a firearm's, and if not some type of bludgeon. Anyone can beat something down with a sledge hammer or club. Ammo would not be a problem if your firing something widely used, as well as if you posses the skills to reload. But all and all I'd prefer to engage at a distance, less chance of infection, and bodily harm.
What, no Katana Cowboys answer up yet?
don't worry Prime they'll show, they're still waiting on their mom to pick them up at the mall
what about a kukri? Don't need too much room to swing it, unlike the katana, and it's like having a good bowie knife and a hachett combined. look up Cold Steel Kukri. They are pretty durable I have one Best $20 I've spent in a while.
Am I to assume that everyone on this site is an extremely fit expert in combat with any of the weapons that they are talking about, I think not. Listen if you guys are into swords/pikes/spears that is awesome go for it, but unless you can actually use them effectively and I am not just talking about swinging a sword a couple of times I am talking the skill and physical prowese to actually be effective in sustained combat with a relentless foe, like zeds, then I would stick to weapons that are more practical, like firearms, which actually will probably out of ammo after most people using a sword have fallen over in exaustion.
your riht i myself have no pysical power but make up for it in intelligence speed make shift wepon master and im not a bad shot with a rifle or if i have to a smg.
this combo: AK-47 or direct copy semi auto w/500,000 rds, 12 gauge shotgun either mossberg 930 or siaga w/500,000 rds, 2 crowbars, 1 uzi 9mm semi auto w/500,000 rds,2 m9a1 pistols, 1 fal,hk G3 or CETME w500,000 rds and a scope, 1 BIG FREAKIN KNIFE. and 1 \cold rolled steel bar.
