Mason drove the limo back to the dispatch garage and took the bus home, the events of the day still fresh in his mind. He sat on his worn couch with a cup of coffee and turned on the news. A young reporter came on, "it was here on the Los Angeles interstate that a truck caused a devastating car accident taking the lives of nine citizens including police officer Josophe Larksmen an eight year Los Angeles police man and a father of two, more info on the accident after the break." The reporter finished and the news changed to a car insurance commercial, Mason let out a small chuckled at the irony as he changed to another local news station. This time a male reporter came on, "just this morning police officer Josophe Larksmen appeared dead, he was later brought to a local morgue were he got up from his autopsy table and began to attack the pathologist" said the reporter, Mason leaned foward and turned up the volume. Just as he began to pay attention to the reporter, the power went out. Everything went black "what the hell is it now, I just paied the damn bills" Mason said allowed. He shuffled around in the darkness until he found his flashlight, besides that the only light he was getting was from the city and the moon, it peered through his window that over looked the buildings and a boardwalk that lead to the beach.
Mason shined the light all around his apartment trying to search for his house phone, just as he found it and picked it up to dial someone banged on his door. Mason hesitated, then slowly walked towards it, the banging returned. Mason looked through the hole in the door, it was a firefighter "hello, is anyone in there?" He asked as Mason opened the door. "Sir, we have to move you out of this apartment immediately, please you have to come with me right now." The fireman ordered. "Alright, let me just grab my stuff" Mason replied as he ran back inside and grabed his messenger bag, then left. "So whats going on" he asked as he noticed all of the other residents in the rooms next to him being evacuated as well "they say theirs some kind of riot going on, some nutcases running around the city causing a mess, nothing to be too concerned about Im sure the police will clear it up in an hour or two, but for now we just need to get you guys out of the building, an apartment complex is too big of a target right now" the firefighter explained.
Mason and the fireman reached the bottom floor were chaos broke out. The landlord was arguing with about ten residents, more firefighters were shouting over people, the entire floor was jamed packed with the angry, and confused residents. Flashlights danced on the ceiling and the floor, since the power was still out people tried to light the room with cell phones, flashlights, and candles. "EVERYONE PLEASE REMAIN CALM!" Shouted one of the firemen but it was no use, just then something rumbled and shook the building, then a loud exploasion shook the building. Mason and the other residents looked out the windows of the bottom floor. A massive smoke cloud blew through the streets, everyone including Mason ran outside to see what happened. A military helicopter crashed into the gas station that was right across from the apartment building. Mason looked around and noticed that the rioting was not just from a couple of whack jobs causing trouble, but it was a city wide revolt! People crowded the streets, some throwing molotove cocktails, others stealing things from shops, people were being robbed at gunpoint. "Holy shit" Mason muttered to himself, just then he broke away from the group of residents that were looking on as the chaos unfolded in front of them. Mason ran to the apartment buildings parking lot, he grabed his keys from his pocket and got into his beat up, old DAEWOO.
"Please start, please start" Mason pleaded as he continued to turn the keys in the ignition, finaly the car sprang to life "thank you God!" He exclaimed. Mason glanced out of his rear view mirror, then spun the car around and zoomed out of the parking lot. As he sped down the street of the now burning downtown Los Angeles he weaved around people trying to escape the city as well. Just then he passed a group of men eating a woman who lay on the sidewalk. "Oh my God, what is happening?" Mason asked himself while tears filled his eyes, just then a man threw himself on his car, pushing his face up to the windsheild bitting and clawing at it trying frantically to get inside. "What the hell!?" He exclaimed trying to shake the crazed man off of his car. He swearved to the right and left all the while trying to dodge other men and women running in the street. The creature thrashed and banged on the windshield until it began to crack and split, Mason stomped on the break causing the man to fly off of the car and tumble on the pavement, Mason didn't hesitate he stepped on the gas and ran over the infected man.
The city of Los Angeles was now almost completley engulfed in flames and chaos. Mason turned on the radio and a woman's voice came on "all citizens of the California area must report to your closest airport for evacuation" she said over and over again "a looped track, thats not a good sign" Mason thought allowed as he drove to the Los Angeles airport.
Clouds of smoke filled the air and ash gently fell from the sky blocking out the light from the moon. It looked as if Satan had made L.A. his playground. Mason pulled up to the airport and ran inside the terminal. He walked passed the automatic doors, and stared in horror. Tears spilled from his eyes, the life drained from his face and he dropped to the ground. Hundreds of the undead creatures were, chewing and tearing apart men, women and children. The stench of organs and blood caused Mason to vomit. It was then he realized that it was truely, the end of the world.
