You have recently found a house off in the woods, off the path less traveled. It's a three story house, and for some reason they have a tower with a spiral stair case. They people who lived here are long gone, but they seemed have had several odd hobbies. There is a collection of ammo of all sorts in the master bedroom. They have a safe that weighs quite a bit. And the kitchen has uncountable amounts of knives and razors. There are several pulley systems in the garage, amongst other tools- such as two lawn lowers, five weed whackers, and a single chainsaw. The houses tower has a telescope with quite a long range of sight. You were listing to you hand held radio today and heard that a huge hoard was on the way- about two days off. The town below will keep them occupied for a while, so you have four days to set up traps for your home. You would like to hold on to this house for a while, so you will try to defend it. Don't worry, you have a zipline on the tower leading to a tree across the river, about 100 yards away. But that's a last resort, and this house has enough food and ammo to last you for three years-more if you ration out the food between you and the other three members of your group. You have four days to set up your home made traps- what will you defend your home with?

Heres a few I would go with:

I would take four wardrobes and cover the ends with blades, then fill it with stones. Attach a pulley system to it , then drag it to the top of a stair case. When zombie are coming up the stairs, drop it down. It'll shatter bones and snap spines. Then, if you have time, drag it back up the stairs and do it again. When the first stair case is overrun, go to the next one.

Seal off all the doors, then put these simple traps there, set to go off when the door is forced open:

Spike ball(just how it sounds, ball+tons of spikes=impale), take one of the lawn mower engines and place it at waist hight, then put cheese wire at ankle hight. Zombie walks in, lawn mower starts, wire trips him, he falls face first into the mower. Put one of those by the main entrance, then use weed whackers with cheese wire instead of plastic to do this with other doors.

Home made grenades:

Open up the bottoms of a bunch of bullets, take out the gun power. Fill small plastic bags with gunpowder and kerosene. Take film canisters(little plastic ones) and place the plastic bags inside. take the head of a match, a small strip of sandpaper, and a wax coated string. Poke the string into the plastic bag. Glue the match head onto the cap of the film canister, with sand paper on the side. Put the string near the match head. To arm, twist the cap of the canister, then throw into crowd of zed(DONT DO THIS IN YOUR HOUSE, IT WILL BURN IT DOWN). FOOM! I would coat the lawn in something flammable, then before the zed reach your house. dig a ditch about 4 feet deep, two yards away from the house. Fill with all the gas you can spare. WHen the zed start coming, throw the nade on the lawn. Lawn catchs on fire. All zombies burn like crazy, then they fall in the ditch. FOOSH! try to make sure that the ditch is too deep to climb out of. eventually the fire will go out and the pile of dead bodies will be tall enough for other zombies to climb on to of and into the house. I would also coat the floors of the house in kerosene, then cover the zipline in it as well. When you flee, you light the zipline on fire, then watch as the fireworks go off. (there are actually fireworks in the basement. See what you can do with those.) They also have a seemingly unlimited supply of gas and kerosene, and there are several large barrels of black gunpower in the basement with the fireworks. Have fun!

The problem with all that is these traps are hard to reload when you're constanttly under attack from zeds. Odds are, you'll only be able to use them once. Once your defenses have been breached, its only a matter of time before your completely overrun so best to use these traps to hold them off long enough to escape.

-_- the idea was that you submit ideas, not point out the obvious.

I said, IF YOU HAVE TIME TO RELOAD.

Deadfall traps with logs and what not, or when the door is forced open a shotgun blast goes off.

4 people stationed at house.  3 people are assigned in the first 8 hours to haul out and cache (and bury) as much food , ammo and supplies as possible within a 2 - 5 mile radius of the house. The remaining ammo has been wrapped in tarps and buried behind an old barn.  Food and supplies have been hidden in and around the barn and other outbuildings along with all usable tools, furniture, etc.

Then 2 people are assigned to digging trenches 1 mile from the house, surrounding the perimeter.  Trenches are 5 feet wide by 3 feet deep at random intervals.  Some of the trenches will later be charged with ammo so that at any given time, a charge can be let off blowing up the trench and anything around/in it.  They also act as stumbling blocks so that many zombies can trip and fall into them and some of them also have 12" spikes pointing upwards so they get impaled.

Multiple trees closer to the house have been cut down and left with branches intact, to create choke points where high impact explosives have been set.

Meanwhile, pulley systems are attached to nearby the trees and make shift harnesses are strapped onto them.  The other 2 people are assigned work on the harnesses and selecting large trees to hang them from.  Eventually, if needed, these will be used as drop down "aerial" defense so that 1-2 people can strap in and defend from the tree tops, just a few feet out of zombie range using the weedwackers retrofitted with wire.  The tree pulley system is also attached to the zip line, for retreat purposes back into the tower.  One of the lawn mower motors is used pulling up the tree snipers out of harms way as well as winching them back up the tower zip line.  All five of the weedwackers are stowed in the trees since they are gas pull engines and have to be manually started.

Knives and razors are mounted to the outside of doors and window at shoulder to head height at 90 degree/right angles.  Since the Z's have to push against a door, this means they have to push against the knives and since I have honed everything to razor sharp, some appendage will be cut off in the pushing process and maybe even a few heads will roll.

The Safe is placed in front of the weakest point of entry (big picture window, etc.) Extra knives/razors mounted there as well.

Chainsaw stays in the house - either chopping up zombies or stairs or whatever is needed or even hand to hand if it gets that bad.

The detached garage is set up as a decoy building. Once it is established that the Zeds are actually headed our way, small game animals will be placed in the building. When the Z's break through the door, there is a 10 minute delay as they fill the building then BOOM!

Around the inside and outside of the doors and windows are booby-trapped with small explosives and flash pots. They are strategically placed to help keep the Z's away from the 2 stairways to the Tower.  The first stair well has the first 5 bottom steps chopped way and has several flash pots around it.  Every other step is missing as you climb the stairs, the top of the stairs is blocked with chicken wire.  The hallway has flash pots and low impact charges.

The Spiral case is metal and the outside has been wrapped with chicken wire.  More knives and razors are wired into the chicken wire extending through the wire to the outside.  In order to even get to the staircase, they have to go through wire, knives and razors, plus climb a very steep incline only to make friends with a lawnmower.

At the top of the spiral stairwell, where the top spiral meets the floor, a hatch as been built.  Attached to the hatch is the 2nd lawnmower, reconfigured so the blade extends 1 foot from the bottom of the frame and has been fitted into floor, blade out.  The last person up the stairs locks down the hatch, pulls the starter cord and the lawn mower hopefully will do some major damage chopping and maiming.

Some of the ammo fitted our guns, so we will defend from the tower and the trees with guns as well. We also winched up some very large rocks to be dropped on the Z's

All 4 of us have bug out bags filled with 2 days supplies and instructions are if we are overrun with zombies at the house, we blow the house after we have zip-lined across the river.  We'll meet to make camp at the first cache.  If it is safe to go back to the house, (meaning most are dead and we can pick off the few remaining), then the plan is to go back, move into the barn and outbuildings, salvage whatever we can from the house and garage and continue fortifying the area.

Otherwise, we'll follow the caches, taking only what we need with the idea that at a safer time, we'll go back to rebuild.  Depending on how devastated the town is, that may be a temporary safe haven, since, ideally, ALL the Z's came up our way once they finished off any  towns people.

nice plans, dude. However, i would use the fireworks as rockets to be fired at the zombie coming up the stairs. Also, attach one to a pipe, then put the pipe on the zipline when you are in the woods on the other side of the river. Coat all the floors in black powder, and take a huge barrel of kerosene upstairs to the tower. when the door opens, the kerosene will be rigged to spill all over the zombie in there. when you see zombie in the tower, light the rocket. ka boom! i would use this after you had moved all the food, supplies and unused ammo out of the house. Afterall, if you plan to rip the zombie to shreds and scatter blood and guts everywhere, I wouldn't want to move back in.

Well, I want to salvage the house if at all possible per the scenario provided to us.  So blowing it is the last resort, hence the flash pots and low impact explosives inside and outside.

And, I don't want to be on the 3rd floor of a house filled with powder and kerosene if there is a chance that we don't have to leave.

The idea is to slow them down and stragetically kill them off BEFORE they get inside the house.  If they get in and overrun the place and are able to breach the 3rd floor (tower), then we go to the next plan.

Its a lot of fun to blow up houses-dont ask how I know. But keeping a safe haven is always a good idea, so blowing up the house is only good if you have a backup. Also, having some zombie see you will lead the entire remaining horde into the river-their to stupid to think of why not to, and not coordinated enough to swim across. I feel bad for the little town downriver-a horde of washed up, pissed of zombie is on the way.
Depending on the shape of the houses/rooms I would be in favor of a large pendulum trap. Use the pullees, wenches, and levers to setup a large pendulum and keep a clear path for it to swipe the zombies back and forth. After it finally loses momentum, rewind from upstairs and release it again.

If the house gets overrun, zip line across, move in a giant circle and setup at the house again for round 2. The zombies never take anything so just wait until it is all clear and go back inside and clear out the corpses... Carefully.

Step 1: move food and ammo to second floor

Step 2: destroy stairs

Step 3: set watch points (ex: sniper in the tower, gunners in the windows)

Now for the traps:

Remove the doors on the first floor (they could get in the way of the traps and can be used to block other paths)

Possible Traps:

-Dig out in front of a door and have a lawn mower over turned in the hole (can't figure how to activate it right now. add ideas if you can think of how)

-trenches around the house filled with knives and sharpened pieces of wood

-Zed are attracted to sound so have a TV or radio with a remote outside away from the house to turn on as they get near also have an explosive near it for when the crowd around it gets bigger

-pipe-bombs rapped in firecrackers (to attract then explode) thrown out of the windows when needed

Running out of ideas right now might add more later

ok.... first off trenches wouldn't be a great idea you only have 4 days to get everything set and trenches would be a lot of work with in my opinion little pay off. a fence would be a better idea considering you have a working chainsaw, pulleys, lawnmowers, and plenty of trees. Is the house on a hill? if so find the thickest trees and as z's approach roll the logs across them hopefully takin a few out and slowing the rest down. but since the fence will eventually fail move everyone in the house barricade the front door and windows with the razors and knifes on the outside so when z's push against it they may mame themselves. have the stairs roughly cut to were one quick cut with the chainsaw the will fall and set the first lawnmower at the hole where the top of the stairwell should be to chop them up if they manage to climb up. have all your supplies on the third floor along with the safe and second lawnmower, on the second floor have a zip line running the length of the primary room seal and barricade the other rooms on this floor you want to make them come through this room once there in have the floor rigged to fall out from under there feet with light explosives on precut spots on the the second floors joists (just wanna make sure the house won't collapse) also crushing the zombies below. once they manage to push past these obstacles because they will have the safe in front of the entrance to the third floor and set the second lawnmower above it to chop them as they push against the safe. once they get past this seal your supplies in a room and head up to the tower. on the staircase have the weedwackers rigged with knifes instead of wire set them in to cut right at head level start them place them and zipline out the tower. hopefully all these traps thinned the undead out enough that you can return to the town reload, rest, and head back to the house killing all the undead on the way. sit there and when they bottleneck coming back at you from the house simply cap them off with the guns. with a little luck and everything goes well you'll reclaim the house and have the town at your access. or maybe none of this will work and you'll be a happy meal within 5 minutes.
yes the house is on a hill. trenches are not always a waste of time-say you fill it with blades, or have a wire that when stepped on activates a bomb, that goes boom in 5 seconds. Also, fill a trench with gas then light it with a firecracker. Zombies on flames will be bad for your house, unless you do this-Fill more trenches with gas, or have a methane bomb(fertlizer in a can) to throw at them. The methane will go BOOM and a flaming zombie+more kerosene/gas=a nearly dead zombie. I would also have a pressure washer that was in the garage(just decided to add this in) to either hose down the surrounding area and flaming zombies, or use it to shoot gas on zombies-or make a flame thrower.
