i was actually expecting to receive a little flak for my comment but your reply made my day. no one ever wants to factor in luck, just their preparation.
well, my definition of a zombie is a reanimated being. something that can be pronounced clinically dead and somehow brought back to life. it's rare, but people die on operating room tables and then are brought back to life through many means. all a pathogen has to do is find a way to spark life into you once you've died, and lost enough braincells. and that's if we are lucky and it isnt something more complex that turns the host into a killing machine. ive read many zombie books and stories and things and they say rabies carries the most recognizable symptoms. one time i watched animal planet's most extreme and found a parasite that controls ants brains so that they will hang from a leaf and get eaten my rabbits. then the parasite reproduces inside the rabbit's intestines and once the rabit deficates, it gets picked up by the ants and the cycle starts over. then i saw another one that works the same way with mice and cats. maybe zombies won't be a virus but a parasite. all a parasite like the one that controls those two animals has to do is mutate to take on humans aswell and instead of causing us to get eaten, it makes us eat others and spread it through saliva and blood.
it's scary to think that there are so many things out there already close to what we think of as zombies.

Toxoplasma gondii make rats aggressive towards bigger animals. The parasite can only breed in the stomach of cats, and predator animals because of a enzyme that is present in their stomack from eating raw meat. The parasite programs the rats to get themselves eaten in order to spawn, much in the same way the ants and rabbits help their parasite. Im not saying its impossible, just highly highly unlikely. Speaking from a medical background I have seen people legally dead brought back, hell Ive done it in the ambulance, and in Iraq. However, those people had only been dead minutes, sometimes seconds before being brought back. People, especially children have been brought back after being submerged in freezing water. Thats only because their metabolism has been slowed down by the freezing tempatures. Once muscle tissue dies, the chances of ever making it move again no matter what are incredibily hard. There are a lot of different things that go into making the body move, these things require blood movement and oxygen which means the chance of reanimation happening are highly unlikely. Thats whats cool about it as a topic though, its highly unlikely and fun to mess with as a idea. Zombies that are living, just brain dead and trying to eat people.....way more likely to happen than the dead reanimating

I believe you make your own luck by being prepared. You strengthen your odds by having a plan. It may be a flexible plan but you have a goal and a general idea of how to get there. If you have no thoughts on the subject of survival then you're S.O.L. and had better be good at hide-n-seek.

i`d Say i Have about oh a 70% Chance of survival.
Best weapon is situational and based on your needs and preference.
But as prime says best weapon is your head, which i`d say with no one minding me taking their various appliances i`d cook up some pretty useful and protective implements to add too my survival rate
Crowd of Zombies(50+)= assault rifles
Half a Crowd(10)= Mix Of Pistol and shotgun,
Few(2-4) = Mix of Pistol and a melee weapon
But overall Gun beats melee any day, but at some point you`re forced to rely on it may it be ammo shortage or shock encounters.
well seeing how i live in Scandinavia, its unlikely for anything to rush us, only two things which have was the black death and the Nazis, i mean took the swine flu like a month-months to reach us i think, before everyone went all panicky.. So depending on origin i`d say we would have time to seal off certain areas once we`d realize the shitstorm we all would be facing. But in worst case scenario, head for the hills, mountains, anywhere with a vantage point and set up camp.
as i believe a Zombie would not wander to far from their spread Zone, and if it did its endless walking/ running would break the foot and bone structure apart.
As for Mutation yes, but it all depends on how the virus first mutates then possibly mutates the human cells to accommodate/ add to its needs. If the Virus is engineered its likely such a outcome is possible.
The Splicers would prolly toy with the virus for so long that they manage to cram about any feature into it with a scary success rate.

Many of us will easily say we will survive, it is one of the most basic human instincts to say will we survive. However many of us might survive the initial onslaught but the larger picture will be who can survive past the coming months and years.
The best weapon? That up for debate and I'll take my DPMS AR-15 or would take a Bushmaster AK-47 along with my melee weapons consisting of my Glock 19, 1911 colt .45, and my Hooligan.
I would travel north up into Canada (from MN) in the theory that the cold/freezing weather would prevent the horde from coming up there until a better plan was devised. Much like having/living on a private island which you and others could control. If you think you are going to make it on your own good luck, you are going to need some help along the way.
Zombies will evolve much like the human race has since human DNA has over 60,000 years. Don't believe me check your own DNA. The beginnings of human life began somewhere along the river banks in African Continent.

well the establishment of archeology speculate with proof showing it to be even further back than that, then again you have almost every native tribal lore telling us, how there has been 6 ages before us which all was high in tech but crumbled.
Then again they also hint to alien involvement of our evolution, So I`d take anything mainstream science claim to be truth with a grain of salt, i accept what i can see in front of me working, ie medicine and technology. Of topic i know but thought i mention it.

I was able to find this. Its a manual for a gun no longer in production called the Bushmaster Armpistol. It was based off the piston system of the AK, and the bold carage assembly of the AR. Sorta interesting, but not something I would ever consider owning unless it was just for pure collectors point.

I think I would survive the attack, maybe not the lonliness/sadness of losing everyone I know and love.
The best weapon choices are axes and bats, things that don't need to be reloaded and that will never jam, backfire or things like that (so yes, melee is better).
I would not be in a city in the first place.
And no, in my perfect zombie scenario, they are mindless, souless and useless.
