The consensus seems to be move all the essentials upstairs and destroy the staircase. Shamblers cannot climb, so it would be more an issue of how much you can have. Unless you can turn it into a fortress with high stone walls and bricked over windows, your best bet is to stay quiet upstairs and not engage them. Ideally they wander in and do not find food and move on. The fortress scenario requires that you sweep the walls clean since even the best man made walls will crumble to thousands that would gather over time. That is more of a team strategy.
What if they ain't Shamblers? I mean i hope that during the zpoc they are all shamblers but what if they are super athletic?
Hmm. Seeing that zed proofing your house before an outbreak would prove kind of odd in today's world there are ways to prepare. Stock up on 2x4s, plywood, quickcrete, rebar and decking screws. When The SHTF you close off all your first floor windows with plywood reinforced by 2x4s. If you have a really weak spot (floor to ceiling windows) you can install some rebar, cover with plywood and 2x4 framing and pour quickcrete between the panels. Sheet insulation, the blue Styrofoam sheets you see in home depot, make good sound insulation too.

I'm sure you'll have a fedw suggestions soon. Any type home in particular?
flip down or slide down steel shutters they go outside ang u can get em down from the inside, 1/2 inch thick ar500
hung up garlic around your house ?...
Ups, that's for vampyre, sorry... LoL

Mine is to keep the lights out (at dark) and decrease noises from the inside so you don't attract Z's much...
As for the entrance or exits - I will put wood boards and nailed it on the windows and for the doors I will complete it with extra locks. As for exits such as the cellar and the attics, I think I would manage to escape pretty quick and silent through the old dry well connected to our basement and headed to the woods near by...
Pretty clever escape route.
If its downstairs? burn it.
fire isn't the greatest ally when your inside a place made of kindling
what i'd want: ideally, a 12 ft wall around my house and yard, reinforced gate, emergeny steel shutters for all doors and windows, one of those emergency fire escape ladders by an upper floor window. the garage attached to the house with an entrance into the house, the garage door itself reinforced, with a heavy duty vehicle prepped and waiting in case an escape is needed, walk in freezer, stocked full of food, hydroponic set up for vegetables, working generator, pretty much a fortress.
maybe even a moat around it

What I have; the upper floor of a creaky victorian house, so boards, nails hammer, basic supplies for barricades, lower floor is a lost cause, cover up the stairwells or at least make them impassible even for runners.Escape, there's rooftop access from the windows, could faseable get to the other houses roofs via that way until getting to a realatively zombie clear area, it's a small town so shouldn't be nearly the size of the hordes you'd find in the city.
and I still would consider some sort of hydroponic set up to grow vegetables.

defend against raiders, lots of guns and ammo
#1 stay upstairs
#2 make sure they can't get upstairs
#3 escape from above... I'm surrounded by forrest, so I can latch on to a treetop and get miles away before I have to return to the ground.
well as soon as we get the money im gonna move to the coast and get a hurricane proof home on stilts with a retractable staircase so we can continue to have use out of it when it is safe. with the seabreeze we could rig a wind powered way of electricity. sea food is good.
I seem to have a lack of "upstairs".
If criminals can't get in to rob you, neither can zombies, they have about the same intelligence.
High fences are a good start in suburbia.
