Here's a few factual timelines if humans are no longer able to operate the systems that provide power. One is from the History Channel 'Life After People" http://www.amazon.com/Life-After-People-History-Channel/product-rev... and the other is a zombie scenario from a site called "The Straight Dope" http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2165/when-the-zombies-take... Didn't know where to post this, but it's quite interesting to see how fast the cities would go dark. "Life After People" even had tigers running around the White House just like " I Am Legend" And go figure the cockroaches will survive and actually thrive when we are gone.

So if you go into the cities several years after WWZ you won't even recognize it. If you can order a used copy of "Life After People" it's worth it.It should start again with 9 new episodes this month.

When the power goes off people will figure a way to make more power. It is our nature.
It's a kewl series, on the DVD it doesn't mention how man vanished, but the special features section of the DVD has a few scenario's like nuclear winter, meteors, and the plague. If you switched a few words like infected flesh eating people for plague , the special features of the DVD showed how fast a zombiefication of the world could happen and eliminate the human race.
It's amazing how in just one or two generations we have become so dependent on power and modern conveniences. We only have to look back 75 years and the answer to a lot of the problems are solved. Wood burning stoves, oil lamps, and the old convection coolers/meat coolers still work today as well as they did 75 years ago. People have been duped into thinking they NEED power, humans prospered for centuries with out it and OMG they didn't even have cell phones.
I actually found "Life after People " rather condescending in it's presentation, it doesn't take a team of "scientists" to figure out that yes nature would take back the cities, hell nature try's to take back my back yard if I go away for a month..As for the zoo animals roaming cities how the hell did they get out of their cages before starving to death?
Man will not always be the dominant species on the planet, sooner or later he will either wipe himself out with one of his own inventions or will simply over populate and run out of resources. It will happen, many ancient races have already disappeared due to over use of what they had, in these days of corporate greed it will just happen on a larger scale.
Being able to live without modern convenience is smart and necessary in a disaster. The ability to have convenience in the time of disaster is a commodity. One you'd initially have to hide.
Agreed Prime, as I said elsewhere my entire house is solar, I think using lights at night would be an invitation for trouble, during a recent power outage I had neighbors from down the street I'd never even met asking if they could have some hot water or could I micro wave something for them.( I don't own a microwave so they were out of luck, but they didn't beleive me and got rather shitty about it). Needless to say that was a wake up call to be discreet.
when it does start to go out i'm getting as far away from the nuclear power plants as possible.
