heh.

couple things come to mind after reading this thread...

1.) apparently very few people know what the hell they are talking about when it comes to firearms or the amount of wieght they can feasibly carry long distances...

2.) apparently very few people posting in here have a clue about what type of firearms would be the most appropriate.

3.) most of you will assume i am not talking about you, and you would be wrong

i admit i completely bricked on the ak-74 comment...

i admit i have average to good knowledge of firearms with the exception of a few...

but, i do think i was fairly modest in my choices...

but who knows...they're on the first page...i wouldn't mind some criticism if you have the time, warmarshall...

hmmmm....

a couple glock 17s or 19s in thigh holsters...

i like joshs idea, a 9mm smg or hipoint with red dot so you only gotta carry one type of ammo...

then again...i could go with a couple .22 semis on my thighs n a .22 rifle with hicap mags, red dot, n hot ammo to keep things a little lighter...semis mite jam often though...

well, i've mentioned it before in a different thread. but carrying duel sidearms only works in the movies. i don't say this to be rude or mean, but simply out of fact. you can't reload, and your offhand aiming doesn't come naturally, so odds are, your shots will be very much off aim.

long story short, when qualifying with my sidearm for duty. my reload time was 2.7 seconds. i am confident that i could get more kills with less waste of ammunition in less time (average rate of recoil recovery per shot) using two magazines with one reload, than i could expending both magazines from 2 different firearms. on top of that, i would still be able to keep this process going as long as i had spare magazines for my single firearm. during a dual reload, you will have to release one of the firearms from your grip. all around, this is the worse combat move possible. don't let go of your weapons!

i am not a fan of glock personally, but there are 2 models i DO enjoy. the glock 17, and the glock 21. i feel these are both very serviceable and reliable. i don't attack your choice in either of these, just the concept of needing 2 of them. better to double up on ammo that to burden yourself with another gun.

as for your choice in a 22lr. pistols, they're very accurate, and almost as good as a rifle (so little recoil, i actually have hunted with a 22lr pistol before) unlike alot of people, i do not look down on a 22lr rifle. it's not something to laugh at, it's a tool perfected for what it was designed for. small game hunting. for a survival situation this is ideal. small game will replenish faster and be more common than large game. not too much use as a combat gun though. and as for the jamming you mention of semi's. though it may be more common than a bolt action, the odds are slim, if you are smart with your gun choice. get a ruger 10/22 rifle, and the thing will outlive you.


as for the ak-74 comment. you didn't brick. they DO make them in 5.56 nato, which is also compatable with .223 (be careful here though, all guns capable of 5.56 nato can shoot .223, but not all .223 can shoot 5.56 nato)

i feel the ak-74 is not an ideal weapon though. mostly because it tries to blend 2 totally different firearms that are each already perfected for their own purpose, and the result is an imperfect firearm that doesn't accomplish either purpose very well.

an ak-47 is a powerful, short range, very reliable weapon. i love my yugo m70ab2 (pictures on my page) and the m16,ar-15,m4 varients are all very precision, high velocity weapons. one trades accuracy for power, basically.

the ak-74 puts the less powerful ammunition in the less accurate firearm, as i view it. it may be slightly more accurate than an ak-47, but it's not near as accurate as the ar-15. same goes in revers for the power.

a better replacement for the ak-74 would be a Siaga 5.56. Siaga takes the ak-47 design, and chambers it for everything. .308 30-06 7.62x39... 223 and 5.56 nato. they even chamber the thing for 12 gauge shells. (thats a fun gun there... a magazine fed 12 gauge with the reliability of an ak-47)



my main complaint so far about peoples choices is that they are getting greedy. i understand this fully. i once thought to carry multiple firearms, and it simply won't work for long distance, or a situation where you have to also worry about all your survival gear to cart around. as i already stated, i love my yugo m70, (love it so much, i even named it) this was origionally my weapon of choice, till i went out on a hike with it, and realised that even in a 3 point sling, the 12 lb weapon and the 6 mags i carried were heavy as fuck. this was just one firearm! ialso carry my sigpro 2340 sidearm. i can't imagine carrying 2 or more primary with all the ammo for them, as well as all my survival gear.

i have since replaced my yugo m70 with a Kel Tec PLR-16 (5.56 nato) it's very compact and light wieght, and accomplishes the same that the ak-47 does, and is almost as reliable (in addition, i have alot better accuracy) i also carry the sigpro 2340 as well. and i've saved about 10lbs of my wieght. (this wieght wasn't secured to my person, but was on the 3 point sling, so it's a VERY noticeable difference). this doesn't mean i plan to carry another rifle or weapon though. i very much believe in one philosophy::

"one firearm to suit all your purposes"

i chose the glocks for the reason that they are a little lighter than other pistols...

and 9mm b/c its lighter too...

i completely agree with the dual pistol thing...stupid...

i was shooting for light weight and one type of ammo...

i figured cleaning kits and shit were a given...

ah. the same-ammo debate rages on alot. i don't normally draw into that one, because i see the point on both sides.

my PERSONAL opinion is that same-ammo is really useful for multiple people. the ability to snag a fallen/injured ally's gear and continue truckin' on, etc.

i feel that in the apocalypse style situation, putting all your ammo needs on one specific caliber is kinda rough. like. if you carried a spare .45 cal sidearm, but you used a .40 cal as your normal, with no intention of "dual wielding" them, you could scavange around, and your odds of finding ammo for one or the other are greater than you finding ammo for only the .40 cal.

this also is a benifit if you're running around with a group in the apocalypse. the demand for .223 ammo among a group of people all carry ar-15's is really high. and if you happen to find .308 ammo, or 30-06? you're pretty screwed. a wide variety of firearms among your group better splits the ammo consumption.

on the last note though, i doubt people will leave a firearm or ammo laying around no matter what it might be, if they have the capability of carrying it. but that gets back to a different point. "have the ideal gun for YOU, and have it BEFORE the apocalypse begins" heh

I'm not a proponent of the dual thigh rig thing. It is stupid. And shooting 2 handguns IS a movie thing, it's inaccurate and wastes ammo. BUT, there is something to be said for dual handguns. A buddy of mine is a tactics instructor for the DEA (he's the real deal) and he encourages dual handguns. He says that in a high stress situation, if your primary firearm jams or malfunctions in any way, it is quicker and easier to transition to a backup than it is to clear it. And if the backup is identical to your primary, then all your mags still work.
And while I don't try to argue that everyone should get a Glock, it is nice to know that high capacity mags from the larger Glocks will work in smaller Glocks of the same caliber.

very solid post, however two thngs i disagree with 1) the ak-74 is not compatible with 223 or 5.56 it is a 5.45 caliber weapon. diferent diameter and diferent case length. 2) the Saiga 12 is available in all those calibers but they are not interchaingable on just one weapon... too many things have to change.

yeah, the desert eagle posts are really starting to piss me off. a lightweight carbine is all you need. i'm still sticking with my ar-15. it's been hard to find one thats not a dud m16a3 though. i'll post if i can find a store

For pistols I would definitely carry a Beretta 92FS Inox maybe two caried in shoulder holsters , maybe a .44 magnum(in honor of the zombie i just disposed of that bore a striking resemblance to Clint Eastwood).

Definitely the M1 Carbine! The M1 Carbine is a viable choice as a personal weapon for use out to 100 yards or so; in many ways, the M1 Carbine can still be effective today when fed the right ammunition.The best ammunition choice for the M1 Carbine is the Remington 110 gr JSP (R30CAR)--at an average velocity of 1864 f/s, it expands to around .54” to .58” and penetrates 13” to 16” even through automobile windshields...so it can definitely take out the brain of an undead attacker!

i would probably have a messanger bag packed full with as ammuntion as one coud possibly fit in it...possibly a backpack as well for the weapon choice i have selected.

You know what I've noticed people always take guns and ammo but never a gun kit, you have to maintain you weapon, so along with some 9mm, hallow points and hulster that's what I'd get
