Ok, GZD, Do you think that the internet would still be functional after a global zombie disaster like in the recent Dawn of the Dead movie? [A character in a short, but related, film mentions that the internet "still works" on the dvd extras] I see no reason to think that the internet would malfunction- but It never hurts to know other's opinions.
Um... I may be wrong but doesn't the internet mainly use phone lines to carry data (I know it does here in Australia)?
Secondly, don't telephone lines carry an electrical current (I got shocked while trying to fix my internet and the phone rang...)?
With a global scale apocalypse, I would imagine global power plants would stop working very quickly and to transmit data over a large distance would require a large amount of power. I don't foresee all the solar, wind and fuel generators being enough to cope with the load of all the appliances left turned on as well as the demand to keep the internet running.
Maintenance (already commented on) would also be a huge problem as crap would get broken further hampering the net's effectiveness. I know data can be 'burst' transmitted by wireless broadcast from HAM radio's etc but the effectiveness would be minimal.
I don't think the internet would continue after a global apocalypse. At least not for very long...
Sat Coms. Most communication today is done by satellite. You would need a transponder and a receiver. Hughes Net, Dish Network and Direct TV have the receivers. You just need a way to transmit.
