I'm sure things like cell phones, tv, and radio will become non-existent in a zombie apocalyptic world, but what about the internet? The government has obviously spent a lot of time and money to make sure it NEVER goes down, so what do you guys think? It would be smart for the government to keep it up because it could end up being our only source of communication.

Look at the Federal Government right now with the Gulf Oil Leak. Ineffective to say the least. Criminally negligent is a better description. Red Tape and pety differences destroy any form of cooperation to be had.
Well the only issue is power to U.S. servers and servers in other countries. As long as servers are powered and running properly you could probably link up via satellite(which its safe to assume they have some kind of long term backup power source). The internet would do you a lot of good actually considering you can find maps, identify plants and find general survival information as well as communicate with anyone else who may also have found access. If no one takes on the job of maintenance I think one could assume that it would be around for at least a couple of years
Once the power goes, there will be no internet, those servers need power, no one is going to hang around refueling emergency generators just to run the web servers when their lives are falling apart. Really, what would you want the internet for anyway? You have time to sit and look at a screen? What good is knowing whats going on elsewhere?, what's outside your door is all that is important. CB and shortwave while your batteries last will suffice. After that.... well man got along alright for nearly 2000 years without electronics, it's no big deal.
it depends if military reminents are around if they ar radios and mabye tv will work. if they are not around its up to roaming militias to get tv / radio becons up and running. cell phones and other objects wil probly not work . cb radios will probly stay up and running in some kind of scrap metal fortress to communicate with others comm for my strike team "sons of the apocolypse" have a guy on it. hes said even at 1 or 2 bars you can still text pretty well. it needs a lowr frequency to function. comms can still wrk wether u use signal fire or a bow and arrow. im pretty shure you can live without constant communications. the only way radio will work is the sattelite is up there and some one mans the station.
Well, if the apocalypse were to happen, and depending on the severity of it all, I suppose that it really depends on how long we have electricity (aside from generators) and if the satellites are still going around in orbit. I would hate to have the internet gone, but I would hate it even more if I had to lose a limb.

I really don't think that if this shit went down, the gov't would allow access to the internet. Yes, it might be a means of communication, but think about the number of people that would be Zeds and the amount of living people. The ratio isn't too promising. And I'm sure that even though almost every house (in america) has a computer, people would be more concerned about other things.
Seriously you can have all the shortwave radios and ham radios you want but it does you no good unless there is someone on the other end. I wouldn't worry about communication I'd worry about information. If the internet is still around I'd take it in a heartbeat over your radios. anyone worth talking should already be right beside you. People misguidedly think the only think the internet is good for is videos of people being kicked in the nuts and talking to other people. You would be suprised what kind of info is on there and how easy it is to find and how useful it can be
What gets me about these type of threads is that so many people rely on what the government will or will not do. GUESS WHAT? The government doesn't care about you or me or the guy next to us or in the next town. The government as it is now cares about power. They care about keeping power. And I'm not talking about electricity. They want control and in a Zpoc as in other disasters they will do whatever it takes to get it and to keep it. Yes they might help a few to get to camps but those few who make it and survive will then be beholding to the governement. They will depend on the government for food, shelter and protection. So when the government decides they need someone to experiment on or to do the real crappy stuff, who do you think they will turn to. And if you refuse you will be forced to do it, as in threatened and beat, or tossed out on your ear. Those who will thrive in true freedom are those who can feed, clothe and protect themselves. They will surround themselves with people made of the same metal. They will recognize the potential others have and try to develop it.

Someone with the ability to pull people like I've described together in to a cohesive group will have what is needed to survive.
well said
The internet may well be there, but the question is whether people will have access to it. If phone lines, cell, and TV service are all down how would you access the internet?
Satellite.
I WILL VOLUNTEER!!! as of now in the event of a zedapoc i will go to whatever building is used to monitor these satellites and maintain said building until i die *or get bored*
Uh, Satellites are maintained in space. It is the servers that need to be maintained. And as long as the system is up you can make your own servers.
