OK, so I spend most of my life living outside of the box and coloring outside of the lines.  Zombies are a classic archetype.  A lot has been done with the mythos and in some of the interviews I have seen with Romero (I have not watched the one on this site, yet), Max Brooks, the creator of the Walking Dead graphic novel (I cannot remember his name) all say that a lot has been done and they are looking for something new to move things in diferent directions.  So, here is a crazy idea that I do not think has been done.

Knights Templars vs. Zombies.

OK, so know that you have caught your breath from laughing so hard, let me give you some backstory.  One of the main charges against the KT was that they worship a talking head.  A talking head has to be animated, but it really can not talk because it has not air pressure from the lungs, not to mention that depending on the exact point of decapitation, it may not even have vocal cords.  So, we twist the myth.  Accusers have it slightly wrong.  The head does not talk, but it is animated.  It is not worshipped, but it is kept safe and only shown to higher initiates as proof of the threat.

It is easy to see that if the dead return to life, it would thought to be magic and christianity could easily believe the cause is Satanic.  So, it is much of a threat that the Pope would create a holy order to deal with it.  Or, if not create, annoint an existing order with the responsibility.  This can explain oh they become a personal prelature of the Pope.  It can give the KT inital funding a recruiting.

The Pope may also want to keep this quiet because if people think that there are zombies, maybe Jesus Christ was a zombie and not the Son of God.  THis could destabilize the faith.  Later, KT can self fund and may slightly deviate from its inital cause. (Um, so if there are no zombies to fight, what the hell do we do now?)

Actions lead to increased violence in the crusades.  The Muslims that rule most of that area may not have an understanding fo the zombie threat.   If they were to find everyone in a town or city killed by the KT, that will really piss them off.  If the KTs say, But, they were zombies!  I can see the Arabs going, yea, right!  Violence could quickly escalate out of control before cooler heads at higher level of government discuss things and present the head as proof.

Many zombie films are modern firearm flicks that are civilization destroying.  Instead, this is mainly melee-based combat where the protagonists are hunter/killers rather than refugees in survival mode.  I am sure that if I read the KT and crusade wiki enteries, I could blend some more ideas.

if you want outside the box you need to read my stories (not on this site as they don't comply with the time line), they go places no zed story has gone before. I like your concept there. You should go with it and write the book!
as said might look into more sub groups of each, might even be more secrecy than you point out here.
Can always twist( slightly brainwash) initiates to believe other things are at work, especially in such a christian Europe at that time.
Anyhow, i like the story and the line
a thought after i posted, this could also be the virus, way before the major outbreak, lets say a weaker stage of the virus in the old days, it could even be called the Black plaque, Any thoughts`?
Ron, if you want to send me a link to your books I will take a look at them.

RE:Other Groups. Thanks for the ideas. I considered the Hospitallers. There was friction between those two groups and at the end of the KT existence, much of KT assests were turned over to the Hospitallers. But, I do not want to get too heavy into a conspiracy story.

RE:Book
I have to learn how to write a book. I am good at the high altitude strategic stuff, but when I get down to the tactical and specifics, I get lost.
LOL, I just had another out of the box idea. Wouldn't it "suck" to be a vampire in a class 4 outbreak (world wide). I can imagine classic vampires (not some lovestruck teenage bloodbag of angst) trying to fight back against the tide of the zombies. Would it go so far that humans may offer up a saccrificial blood doll as a peace offering to one or more vaampires? A close quarters assault force teamed up with a zombie to clear out a small town. How soon would they turn on eachother? How much disruption to day to day functions does the distrust ferment? Depending on the power level of the vampire it may be thought of or pose as just another urban goth

Maybe I should not even worry about writing a book and just throw together short stories.
Yea, but I am writing fiction to take our minds off the zombie outbreak. 8 ). Point taken, I did not think it was nearly as good idea KTs. Just showing you how screwed up I am. These thoughts constantly go through my mind. Often interfering with work. Now, I just have to learn the method or the disciplin to take a single plot idea and make story. Short or otherwise.
Thanks for the heads up. It is interesting to note that KT fell ~1300. J Were founded in 1500. A plot device would be the KT were founded to suppress an outbreak. But, it fell into myth and J was created to deal with the new threat.

As long as we are talking religion. I have toyed with the Idea of Jericho. It was destroyed and for all but one family EVERY man woman and child were put to the sword. Joshua 6:21 "And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword."

Many people are taught about the walls coming down, but the genocide is often overlooked. Interestingly, they walked around the city for seven days before the assault. That would allow enough time for runners to decay to shamblers making the fight for the city that much easier.
I REALLY like that knights Templar idea!... but the whole time I was reading it, I couldn't help but think of the movie Season of the Witch...I know its not entirely the same, but it does have knights, melee combat, and zombies.
Thanks for the feedback. I am not familiar with Season of the Witch. Hold on, Googling....

Hmmm... So many

Romero Film about housewife who gets into witch craft (A zombie icon)
Nicholas Cage film (crusader, probably what you mean)

It might be interesting to show the conflict over history. But. I fear it would be too much like Max Brooks' graphic novel. Anyway, let me free write something like this. KTs initiated to fight the zombie outbreaks. There are several but it is surpressed over a few years. Then, you have a group with a hell of a lot of freedom to do what they need to do, but have nothing to do. So, Guard Pilgrims. Then, well since we are going back and forth we might as well guard merchants. Why don't we become merchants. Hell, let's be bankers.

Then go with current belief that king of france needed the cash, so the KT is broken. To make it more interesting, call upon the KT to fullfill their duties. But, the organization is so fat sassy and filled with stuffed shirts they are incompetent. They REALLY screw something up and that is why the king and the pope sac' them. Those with a true warrior spirit are allowed to go free and head north to Scotland to teaam up with Robert the Bruce and then the St. Clairs. (regardless of which path caused the collapse)

Well, that took about five minutes to think up. To bad I only think at a strategic level and not the tactical.
Correct, I really can not do that well. I am no good at fleshing out a story. But, I tell myself that I should be able to use the same skills of dislocated thinking to smaller places. I take a mindseye look at something nearly everyone knows something about and remember an obscure fact that people do not know and then link it back to something people know.

KT ==> Talking head ==> zombies
Jericho ==> walls ==> Zombies.

I just thought of something else. Mesoamerica indians. Step pyramid, cut out the heart and show it to the crowd as the "sacrifice" victim still struggles on the Alter. Cut off his head and throw the two down the stairs. I have to double check, but I think those buildings are also adorned with representations of heads and slits in the wall to place heads. *shrug*
hmmm...

Pretty good point I should try that. My funky ideas mostly form on my one hour (one way) commute. I can think broadly, but not concentrate on the small things while driving and even if I could, it is not like I can write while driving. At 40+ I am too old to learn to text and drive. LOL and all you youngsters should not be doing it. Your text while driving was my generations, Wear your seatbelt! When I was a kid, everyone clicked the seat belt behind them to shut the sound off. And none of us used a helmet while biking.
Not, not you. I remember you saying something about seeing Red Dawn in the first run theater. Nope, not for you, but I hope more than just you read my withered brain's dribble
