Level of supplies before acquiring more?

Do you have a certain point that you are not willing to let your supply level go past before making plans to acquire more? Are you more lenient on some things and stricter on the necessity of having certain other items?

I currently have 3 weeks of survival food on hand. This includes MREs, canned and dry goods. I figure that's prepared for the natural disasters we see going on today. I don't think you can actually have "enough" so when I see something at a good deal I pick it up. You have to cycle through your dry goods and canned goods. Replace them as or before you use them. Supermarkets today have a maximum of 3 days worth of goods in the store. Most of those items are on the shelves because today's stores go with out a lot of back room storage,

 

Ammo, never enough. buy and reload. Practice and stash. I practice with reloaded ammo and stash the store bought stuff. I've got about 3000 rounds of stashed .223 Remington and 1500 rounds stashed .45 acp. 500 rounds of 12 gauge slugs, buck shot and bird shot and 2000 rounds of .22lr. I've got about 100 rounds of 30/30.

 

You keep the weapons you know but learn how to use different weapons. I've got guns, knives, machetes and axes. My primary weapon is the AR15. I currently own 2. My primary sidearm is the M1911. I currently own 2. I'll carry a Kabar type knife on my person and a folding pocket knife. I am a police detective and carry a Glock 30 and a Kershaw 1775 folding knife while working. Our patrol officers carry the Glock 21. The Glock 21 mags fit in to my Glock 30. I have my AR15 available to me at work, either in the trunk of my personal car or the trunk of my work car. I keep a B.O.B. in my personal car. The bug out bag contains a change of clothes (loose fitting ACUs or BDUs), boots (Merrel Moabs), 3 days of food (MREs), extra ammo, first aid kit, survival blanket, mini-shovel, a map and compass.

 

I work 38 miles from where I live. If the SHTF no matter what I will be expected to stick it out if I'm at work. At some point there is a time when sticking it out ends and it is time to bug out. I plan to be prepared whether I have to bug on foot, horseback or motor vehicle.

 

My wife and I own 7 horses that we keep and train at our home. I am friends with several people near where I work who own horses. More then likely the highways will be clogged and I'll be traveling with my friends via horseback.

I have at the moment, five months worth of canned food and bottled water. Also, if I have to kill 100 zombies a day, I could last three weeks on my current ammuniton stock...BEFORE switching to my next weapon XD! unless I have to use my RPG, witch would last me a day, if one shot= 4 zombies dead.

I've got a year's supply of food storage, plus several cases of MREs and squad meals. I'm set for a while in that department. Water's a big factor, and I've got a filter that will go though 14,000 gallons before it needs changing, plus replacements. 

 

As far as ammo goes, let's just say I've got a lot, but there's no such thing as enough. 

 

If I can secure my dwelling, I'm safe for a good long time. If it's not, time for Plan B.

I agree with everyone that having a good deal of food on hand is important. I currently have a 6 month supply with the ability to extend it if necessary.

I have about a 6 month supply of canned food, freeze dried, and MRE's.  Whenever I buy new perishables I log the expiration date in an online calendar so it shoots me an email a little bit before.  Then I know its time to move that food out of storage and into the kitchen.  I got a good deal on Mountain House #10 cans of freeze dried a while back.  Shelf life is something like 30 years.  Also, on all my food I marked date of purchase with a sharpie pen.  This place has a lot of good stuff:  Ready Made Resources

 

Expiration dates also apply to my medical supplies.  I have a relative who is an ER nurse that kicks me a bunch of random first aid stuff every now and then. 

 

For water I have a bunch of 5 gallon and 2.5 gallon milsurp cans as well as a swimming pool.  If that runs out I live near the beach.  I might have to make a solar still to desalinate the water or something.

 

For ammunition, the rule I have is every time I buy ammo I put 1/3 of it into the emergency/disaster storage.  This way I'm building up a good amount a little bit at a time.
