Now some of you may ask why would we need medical knowledge when we are killing zombies? so I'll answer, what happens if you slip with you sword and you cut off a hand or stab your self? or you fall and break something? how would you fix it? I am not asking for a brain surgeon to tell me but just a normal person to see if they know what to do, but anyone in the medical field is welcome to post their knowledge or tell others their going to kill them self's.

answer these questions and I'll see what you know

1. your destroying a stair case to the upper floors of the apartment building, your not paying attention and land your 20 lbs sledge hammer on your foot.

2. your sharping your broad sword and slice from the tip of your index finger and all the way into the web of skin in between your thumb and index.

3. a zombie bites you on your lower wrist and you quickly amputate it thinking it'll save you, it stops the spread of the infection but how do you stop the blood from pouring out of your arm, closing up the amputation, and then keeping it clean?

lets see what you people know, and don't cheat.

P.S. your by yourself.

well you seem to know a bit but I could add to yours.

1. ice, ok but I'd add wrapping it up and not walking on it for a few weeks.

2. pretty perfect.

3. I'd myself would cauterize the amputation. save most of the bandages.
i would go with Big Daddy's number three only if there is no way to cauterize the amputation
honestly when is there not a way? if you have a gun chances are you have bullets which would be the fastest way to cauterize something.
1. Safety is #1. depends what bones you break. try to splint it as best as possible, but it's going to hurt like hell.

2. bottle of vodka, sewing needle or fishing hook, and thread or fishing line. you can sterilize the wound and your supplies with the vodka and use it as a pain reliever. sew yourself back together then wrap it in clean dressings. if you use the fish hook, cut the barb off of it

3. Being the in the health care field under emergency services, the standard of care would be to apply direct pressure to the wound and elevate it about your heart just like what big daddy said, then apply the tourniquet. you can use any kind of open flame. the walking dead on amc had a really good idea on using a sterno flame you can keep in your kit.

The best way around the whole thing would be to raid a hospital or an ambulance for supplies like IV kits with normal saline or lactated ringers. Also get some IV antibiotics. The down side of that is the self life of the medications and keeping them sterile.
your not taking the whole damn bottle, a shot of vodka for the bad things. Just to dull the pain a bit so you can work on it.
very smart gentlemen.

my view on raiding a hospital is just out of the question, when the first outbreaks start to happen their mainly at the hospital. so in less you plan on going there a few months after the main outbreak it's going to be a mad house, even then there's going to be zombies all over the place.

now I don't know the 3 main blood vessels but it couldn't be that hard to find out which one is bleeding the most. a 139 IQ and common sense is a powerful weapon.
true but for how long? hospitals tend to me huge! so in less you can kill zombies with no sound and not letting the entire population of zombies in the building know your there it would take a lot of time. Let alone how could you do it safely with any of these injuries?
1. A 20 pound sledge is going to destroy bone. Not sprained a ligament or tear muscle, it will literally destroy it. After that fun fact, I agree with Big Daddy. You must find a safe zone. Then check the dumb ass to see if he's going to hemorrhage out on you or not. If so leave them there, at this point they are nothing but Z food. If they are not to hemorrhage out find something to you immobilize the foot, ankle and possibly half the leg, such as a splint.(There is always something to make a splint out of.) Then get the hell out of there.
2." AHHH, THAT SHIT HURT!!!!" After slicing yourself wide open, try to find some type of clean water source and wash, then bandage. Keeping out infection is the hardest part of slicing yourself open. If you can, try to find something to stitch the wound shut. You can use fire to sterilize the needle or something like a guitar string if needed. Then you need to go looting your local pharmacy and try to find some type of antibiotic. Hopefully someone in your group might have thought ahead, in case of a zombie apocalypse they grabbed some antibiotics and other Meds.
3. Tell your family or friends how much you love them and goodbye. Then go blow your head off. A bite is a bite and gets infected quickly. No tourniquet or amputation will control or contain this virus. Remember if this virus that has changed civilization as we know it. Good luck.
finally someone gets the sledge hammer thing, chances are your going to lose your foot in less you happen to know extensive medical things.

and the bite, I'd argue you that a bite is a bite. If you are able to cut off anything above the bite in several seconds you have a chance. super virus or not it has to travel the blood stream before it can get anywhere and it takes from my knowledge it takes 5lts of blood about 1 minute to pass thought the body.
It may take even less time then one minute. Cardiac output is measured in stroke volume x rate. It will take one minute for the blood to circulate that slow if you had a normal heart and the rate is around 70 beats per minute. If you were tachycardic (fast heart beat greater then 100 beats per minute) from the shock of being bit or you were running, then you have a smaller window then one minute.

wow, paramedic school is finally paying off for somethings.
yea try but 70 beats a minute will only get 5lts of blood though the body not the full 7 or how ever many humans have.
It tales two minutes for all of your blood to circulate your body, under normal circumstances... And you have aprox 6 liters of blood.
