Of course we all know to stock our Bug out Bags with things like ammo and a crowbar, but what about the unconventional things?
I believe that as much shooting and drama as there will be, eventually I'll have boring downtime and even a few everyday annoyances, so a few things I'm including in my bag are a small paperback copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, vacuum packed espresso and coffee as well as a small mocha pot, and an afro pick for my beard.
What are some unorthodox items you're including?

a gameboy. u can find batteries everywhere
it may sound unorthodox but a kindle would be really usefully. you could hold thousands of survival manuals and other important information it you would need to survive. remember all the little things we take for granted are gone. it takes tens of thousands of people working round the the clock just so we can live the way we do now. with all those people gone you'll have to do everything yourself. from skinning game to re wiring an impromptu electrical grid. its better to know that stuff now but a refresher can't hurt. and for the size and weight of a notebook you can't really go wrong. the batteries can last over a month. combine that with a small solar charger and one of those waterproof plastic bags the sell and there you go.
very logical. must remember to charge nook and get a spare car battery...

But on the other hand, you make a VERY valid point. As long as the kindle can read PDF files, it's a golden tool that on one charge can last a very long time. Information is power, and a tablet like that really can hold more than it's weight in gold. (Imagines a movie along the lines of the Kindle of Eli)
also I'm sure you've never heard of it but wire glue. just like the name imply s its a conductive glue. like i said before you'll have to do everything yourself. that includes small electronic repair. now I'm good at this and do it all the time. problem is to do it you normally need solder. which is a think cable of metal that become molten when you touch it with something hot and is sued to attach electrical devices together. to melt the solder you need a soldering iron. a tool you plug into a wall and it gets really hot. you can see the problem with this. once during a black out i had to fix something important but couldn't because there was no power for my soldering iron. that where wire glue comes it. a little dab where you need it, let if harden over night and bobs your uncle, soldering with out a soldering iron!

i don't think so unorthodox by definition means anything out of the ordinary. in this sense it means something you normally wouldn't think pack in a bug out bag or something that most people do not include.
