Here is a google map of the area I live in and the planned fortifications for when TSHTF. The grey area is scorched earth that will extend to about 100m in most areas, just so no body can walk right up to the fort and not be seen. The brown shape on the outside is a 3.5m wide by 3.5m deep trench in front of a 3.5m high stockade wall similar to what you would see on a colonial era fort. The red square on the right will be the main gate house which is a neighbours garage right now. and the red square on the left is another neighbour's house that sits on a hill and will be fortified with another wall around it to act as a keep in case the outer wall is breached. The land between the houses will be cleared and made into fields for crops. Everybody here is on well water so that is not an issue as long as there are hand pumps available and there is a fresh water stream that runs through the back corner of the fort. There is also a small path near the left of the map, that will be the retreat path if things get really bad. I know there is a lot of variables and huge amounts of work to make this happen but I have a plan for heavy equipment and I'm pretty sure I can convince my neighbours to chip in when every thing goes to hell.

I was all like baka!!!!!!!!! so I am impressed that you thought of this so much but here is a problem ... food. as far as I can see it you can try to live off the land in what appear to be pretty fertile land.but most farms these day use tons of chemicals and growth supplements now even though we dont think about it like this plants have evolved to. so the fact that for the last 700 we have been giving them growth nutrients there gonna be pretty tough to grow organically.and besides that what are you gonna feed the animals when your already farming(your gonna need every square inch just to get by)so that will be tough. and your second option is "gathering " from other places it will expend alot of energy so... I hope you bring like a trolly or something or use cars that you find (check the back seat :P
Permalink Reply by Bkolle on May 16, 2012 at 11:44am Well its not really chemicals thats the problem. You need animal shit and lots of it, thats what fertilizer is made of these days. And you already got that part covered with the animals. Most animals arent picky about their food
Permalink Reply by Patrick on May 17, 2012 at 4:11am Actually we have already started working on the food issue. The land is mostly recovered wetlands and is quite fertile. My wife and I have started gardening in a serious way and we only use heritage seeds. If you don't know heritage seeds are natural and have not been altered genetically. We are learning how to collect the seeds from those plants as well. There are plenty of organic farmers out there now and a lot of farmers in Canada have reduced the amount of chemicals they use.
I have thought about the food supply a lot. And I've researched which plants are best and use up the least amount of space. As for labour and animal husbandry... The horses and goats that will be 'acquired' will be able to graze and their poop will make nice fertilizer. We are also looking into getting some guinea hens soon.
The crap you hear about evolving plants and chemical pesticides not being harmful is just that CRAP! Its propaganda from a company named Monsanto. If you haven't heard of them do some research on them. If they get their way they alone will control the entire food supply of the United States. They are trying to get into Canada but they are being fought, European countries will not allow them and India is suing them for destroying crops.
