The Neostead NS-2000 is a 12-gauge, 18 inch (457 mm) barrel, 3 kg, overall length 20 inches (508 mm) shotgun developed in South Africa. It is designed to contain civil and security disturbances. In early 1990s two South African engineers, Tony Neophytou and Wilmore Stead, designed the NS2000. In 1991 they patented pump-action shotgun with forward-sliding barrel, and modified later for dual feed tube magazine. NS2000 production began in 2001 and is considered a revolutionary pump shotgun.
The short length of the gun is suited to handle close quarters combat situations, also for accuracy for long ranges. The long barrel length is due to bullpup configuration, with a rear loading and a tubular magazine. The feed tube is on top of the barrel. While firing, the shotgun's handgrip is pumped forward instead of backward. One of the unique features is its dual six round magazines that are interchangeable. Two tube cylinders store twelve rounds that run along the top of the barrel. The selector lever can be turned left, right or alternate during riot situations when less lethal baton rounds are fired, while the standard rounds are in reserve.
This differs from conventional pump methods due to its hand forward-back instead of standard back-forward motion of the non-trigger hand. Its pump mechanism is driven by forward-back motion and the presence of rear-load configuration.
Another unique feature of NS2000 is that it is built with fixed breech-face and forward-moving barrel. In case the barrel is loaded with an empty case, to reload the shotgun the operator should pull the slide forward, and then backward. This movement makes the barrel to go forward, leaving the spent case held against the breech-face by the extractor. If barrel clears the spent case, through the opening in the gun shell it will be ejected down. If slide is pulled forward, the new cartridge is released and pushed out of the magazine above the barrel, and later lowered by the feed-ramp till the alignment with the barrel is put against the breech-face at the same time. If the slide is pulled backward, it will take the barrel back, so that barrel can enclose the cartridge and locked itself to the breech-face. At this moment, the gun is fired again by pressing the trigger.
