Or if so hopefully your neighbors are not insane, or hungry and undead haha. Personally my ideal place would be my uncles property in W.Virginia. 7 miles off the main road, natural gas well, hunting cabin on property, would be perfect. But this is unrealistic thinking for me as i live in Ohio, but it would still be a decent rally point eh haha.

Permalink Reply by Wes Remington on October 5, 2012 at 10:37am There are 2 ideal safehouse setups. One setup is in an urban environment. The building should have no more than 3 entrances on the ground floor. Windows on the ground floor should be closed and fortified. The building should have open windows on higher floors and roof access. You need to have escape options on the ground floor but no more than 3 so you can secure them. You need to have the ability to repel or climb down from higher floors. The size of the building depends on how many other survivors you have to help secure the building.
The other safehouse setup is in a rural environment. A cabin on high ground proximal to water is ideal. You can use terrain to setup a perimeter defense. High ground provides the ability to detect threats from a distance and gives you the advantage in zombie combat.

Permalink Reply by F Clef Jeff on October 5, 2012 at 7:13pm I'd go with something hidden, probably underground, and on the outskirts of a city. That way, Raiders would be less of a threat and more easily handled, and you could get to the city if you had to search for supplies, or get them from natural surroundings outside of the city. I'd want a fresh water supply close, and to be at least a few miles from any highway.
The way I see it, Raiders will be the biggest problem in a Z-Poc, and from what I've learned, they're likely to come in large groups and will likely send a few friendly scouts first, while hiding large and well-armed numbers. Forces like that will be nearly impossible to stay ahead of for any serious length of time, so the best bet most smaller groups will have, will be to stay hidden and use cover to our advantage. If a time comes when we find ourselves in a fight, we'll be more likely to survive it if we make our land into a virtual minefield for these groups to cross, rather than immediately bring physical force into it.

Permalink Reply by F Clef Jeff on October 13, 2012 at 5:59pm That's a good point. I can't really think of a lot of ways to disguise an entrance or especially a path to an entrance for an underground place, but I still think you'd be a lot more hidden under ground than above it. I guess it all depends on the resources and the planning of the individual. Where I'm at, I'd go underground if I could - this place is starting to get pretty bad about crime, so there are already a lot of organized groups that would become (or continue to excel at being) raiders.
Permalink Reply by the death of saint.357 on October 14, 2012 at 7:24am their are a lot of ways actually, if your underground base is in an area with a lot of large boulders you could construct a fake rock out of wire mesh and spray foam. they do it all the time in prop and set making.. there are a million other things you could make it look like. any body seen the move red with Bruce Willis. the crazy guy used an old junk car to disguise the entrance to his underground shelter. you came in and out through the car hood. if you can afford an underground shelter then you can afford to disguise the entrance. their was a science channel show that got canceled that was all bout a company that made custom bunkers. doomsday bunkers it was called. great show. they can make you a whole underground house if out want. or just a small tactical bunker. one guy wanted a tactical bunker. so they all have enclosed stairways leading down. so this guy had them instal a swing down spike trap, and the handrail was secretly a flamethrower. pretty sweet right?! that's what I'd want.
