Prisons.....
So...I've seen the "barricade yourself in the mall" scenario beaten to death....something I thought of a while back....that about prisons? prisons are the modern castles when you think about it. High walls...good security...food....the works. Obviously there's the issue of "prisoners." Could be resolved by letting them loose...and seeing what happens...whatever....

In a world where the dead are returning to life and eating people I would think the safety of scum would be the last thing on the minds of guards, so you could walk in if you were lucky. The problem that comes with prisoners could be solved by opening the doors and setting them free, like you said. But as soon as they walked out the front door ready to f up society, they would be confronted by hordes of skin jobs just itching for a taste. So that survival instinct would kick in and they too would realise how safe they are behind prison walls, so unless you want to walk around putting a bullet in each of them, prison isn't a good idea.
Your best bet, well at least here, would be your nearest court house. They have generators, food/water, large code locked doors and they would be cleared out within a day of an outbreak. I personally will go my state parliament building, where it has the same facilities and there is such tight security, but if it's still running you could slip in and hide until everything falls to crap, then just lock the doors and wait until your friends arrive with extra food/water and weapons/ammo.

actually, a prison guard i knew once told me that in the case of shit hitting the fan (like apocalyptic shit) there is something where the prisoners are supposed to be let go.
well, either that or they would all starve to death in their cells.

but thats just lucky. you cant expect that to happen more than once. and eventually you have to find more food or grow it. Good luck.

I could see a huge outbreak in the prisons. People get sick and die in there. Our county prison has about 1600 inmates. Some are in there because they hate each other. Let them loose and how long is it gonna take for them to start killing each other? They'll stick to what's familiar to them; the prison. Some would survive of course. others would not and they'd have to be dealt with. Well the living ones would probably have to be dealt with too. They aren't in the prison for being ideal citizens.

Well for one thing the majority of people in prison in this country are in for non-violent offenses, mostly drugs. Even then some of the violent people would be useful out there. But check out "Beyond Re-Reanimator" It picks up with Dr. West getting arrested at the end of the first movie than takes place in prison where he has restarted his experiments with re-animation. It also has a scene that Synder ripped off for the Dawn of the Dead remake where the legless zombie is climbing along roof rafters.

I think it's okay. Use prisoners to your advantage! Extra Manpower. Who gives a f*** about their drug charge when there's zombies runnin' around!? Gather some trustees and arm them. For the crazy inmates, send 'em out with clubs, that way they can kill and eventually be overrun, you wouldn't have to worry about much then!

interesting thought. It can be good and bad. It's possible that some of the prisoners would help you, but most of them wont. Some might even have turned. Then again, if that happened, most of the cell block would probably be willing to help. nobody wants that to happen to them. Anyway, If you dont have to deal with prisoners, it is a really good place to go. Most important, though, is to plan ahead. If you just barge in, you WILL die. develop a plan and stick to it.
