So...I've seen the "barricade yourself in the mall" scenario beaten to death....something I thought of a while back....that about prisons? prisons are the modern castles when you think about it. High walls...good security...food....the works. Obviously there's the issue of "prisoners." Could be resolved by letting them loose...and seeing what happens...whatever....

tell me what you think.....

good idea/bad idea

I think they'd actually be well protected, and would stand a good chance of making longer than a lot of people who have less cover, no electrical generators, and limited food. Prison food may not be gourmet, but its industrial and there's plenty of it, and that's a huge factor in survival. If prisoners decided to hole up in their veritable stronghold, it could turn out to be a really good decision on their part, for a few weeks at most.

I'm going to pay you to make this Rylan person stop commenting on everything I write and quit following me around on here. Its getting annoying and kind of childhish, and if I wanted to be called names I'd go kill baby kittens and put the video on youtube or something. Something that at least merited such outrage and spite that I'm recieving. And don't fear- I'll pay you in ammo and BBQ, because we both know that after Z Day, money is worthless, but BBQ lasts forever.
But what are you going to BBQ? Perhaps those kittens on Youtube? :p
Dood, if I really wanted outrage, that's exactly what I'd do! LMFAO
Ammo and BBQ Kittens. The way to my heart.
Its a great idea... I would definately use it.... on a minimal scale maybe a month or so. Atfer a while the fences would be knocked down then your tuna in a can
Clearing out a prison? No thanks. Whew, I don't even want to think about all the halls, cubby holes, etc...Even should you find one that's been kept somewhat secure by the inmates, that's not necessarily a situation I want to be near.

I mentioned in the other thread that I've got no problem with guys that have done their time. Personal experience has shown me many of them are ok people, that just got stupid. Hanging out with the wrong people, liking their beer too much, getting hooked on drugs. On an individual basis, I can deal with that, no problem. Walking into a prison, however, you're dealing with them on the worst possible grounds. There would be a few decent people, and the majority would probably be decent enough outside, but 90% of people are sheep. That 90% is going to flock to whoever seems to be in the strongest leader (the same instinct that got most of them in there to begin with), and unfortunately, that strongest leader in a prison is probably going to be someone that you would want as far away as possible from you and your family.
courtney thanks for pointing me to this discussion. prime predator helped me out alot. it seems like there really isn't a safe place to go. might as well take out as much of them as i can
you gotta make sure teh prison your looking to use is one of those OLDER supermax prison , where concrete walls were used to keep people in rather than motion sensors and hitech security and razor wire and chain link fences,
think Attica Prison for the 70's that'd be great
with a supply of power, from generators, decent amount of food and the ability to grow more, lots of room and space for a large community, a built in medical facility, albeit crude and small, lots of Clothing, though its all prison uniforms, and a steady supply of reading material to keep people occupied, and the Armory <333
Maybe once everything is well under way and the prisons are empty or have only a few zeds in them would I think of even entering one. It also depends on where it's located. I've worked in a State prison that is in the boonies. I've also transported prisoners from prisons in the boonies. They would be more hospitable after the clearing out and emptying was done. I've been to county prisons in the middle of town. Some are like old fortresses and castles. The fact that they are in the middle of an urban area is one of the main turn offs for me. Prisons are meant to keep bad people in. Yeah occasionally there is an escape but for the most part they do their job. The control centers are out of reach of prisoners. They are basically on the outside of cell blocks and the prison itself. So a zed comes into the control center from the outside bumps some buttons and all the prisoners are loose. yeah I can see this. Murphy's Law of Zombie life says it happens. All the noise and yelling and stuff draws in more zeds. So we have a battle of inmates and zeds. Inmates armed with rudimentary weapons they've made from toothbrushes and BIC razors. Zeds armed with teeth and no pain or sense of fear. Inmates die after being bit and you have more zeds. A couple inmates manage to escape and close in everyone else. Zeds and fighting inmates. Soon it's all Zeds. So a group of well armed and organized survivors can make a go of it if they survive the clearing out of all the zeds. Or they can end up joining them. Anyway, I feel there are much better places to hold up than in a prison.
I THINK THAT A PRISON WOULD BE DECENT PLACE TO GO BECAUSE ALL THE REASONS YOU HAVE STATED. BUT ALSO I WOULD TRY TO STAY ICOLATED FROM THE PRISONERS ANS ALMOST EVRYONE ELSE ECEPT PEOPLE WHO NEED HELP OR MEMBERS OF MY GROUP.
A stronghold that is similar to a prison, structurally (in a way), and defensively (in a much more relevant way) is a Self Storage Plot. Very structured - some two and more stories tall - divided into small rooms, with clearly mapped hallways. No doorknobs, but steel sliding doors! All have a bathroom - running water - and are surrounded by 8 foot fencing topped with concertina wire. They are built to KEEP OUT!

There is usually an office, or central lookout even if the electricity goes. Corrugated metal rooms - pick your size - WITH metal lattice crawl spaces above. This allows you to live on the third floor, but systematically bring in the Zed on the first for daily "removal".

You may find useful items in the abandoned units, or fuel for the signal and perimeter fires.

They can be found in every town in North America, and once scoured, the units can be used for housing whatever the square footage.
Remember: Zombies are weak! Always tell someone where you're going, and ALWAYS wear protective clothing!
ehh id lose the fencing for some real cinderblocks
even if a zombie cant get over it massed bodyweight will tear teh fencing straight down =/
which would Suckkkk
