Permalink Reply by Ron Salter on April 17, 2011 at 7:17am The bit about a person carrying 1/3 of their body weight is for a fit young male. They account for probably less than 20% of the population. If your only carrying ammo, life is gonna be hard.
It takes me 4secs (timed) to unload (no ejectors) and reload my double barrel coach gun, with shells held on a belt slide, you could get that down to 3 seconds with ejectors instead of extractors. This where training with what you have comes in.
If I'm within 4secs of a shambling zed, I did something wrong.
Combat, particularly at close range, can be taxing. Perceptional distortion (hearing loss, tunnel vision, time distortion, etc) is a big problem. Other skills, such as accuracy, and reloading, can also suffer. Training and experience can help reduce the negative effects, but I don't think they can be completely eliminated, especially at closer ranges.
IMHO, a shotgun is can be effective at covering a hallway, alley, or entry way at closer range. The narrow field can help improve accuracy. You don't need to swing the barrel too much. And depending on the ammo, the shotgun "could" knock down more than one " Night of the living Dead zombie (poor balance) in a tight spot. Beyond that, I see the shotgun as a backup for my backup.
Permalink Reply by Ron Salter on April 17, 2011 at 5:39pm What has poor balance got to do with knocking a zed down with a shotgun?
00 buck has 8 30cal balls. That's the same as 8 shots from a 308 rifle (tho traveling at lower velocity) only 1 of those needs to contact a zed in the head, if your in a building, at those ranges, so long as you actually aim, you are going to make contact with at least 1 projectile, if his undead friends are close by you may get 2.
Poor balance could cause a number of zombies to go down (also make it harder for them to get up too fast).

Unless I'm running from them, I'd rather they not get knocked down. Seems to me they'd be harder to shoot when they're trying to stand up (more movement.)
Permalink Reply by James McDonald on April 20, 2011 at 10:52pm FYI being hit with a .308, or the nato 7.62x51mm version is not the same as being hit with a ball from buck shot. The balls are not accurate, and have no tumbling effect upon impact. Ive seen people shot with buck shot from ranges exceding 50 feet with little immediate affect. However, a .308 at any range is going to take any target off its feet. In Iraq Ive seen .308 take the head completely off targets when shot in the neck line. A shotgun will only do that at close range.
Once again Im not shotgun bashing, I love those fun messy little fuckers. They all have a place somewhere in my load out.
Permalink Reply by James McDonald on April 18, 2011 at 9:38pm I like 12 gauges, but there are acouple of reasons for not using them. One thing to think about is where your going to use them. If your in close range the make for a large mess, and gives you a greater chance of exposure to contaminated blood. Another reason is that carrying ammo is heavy.
Personally I will be carrying two with me. I have a Remington 870HD that I have tacted out, and a Serbu Super Shorty with a leg holster. That being said I plan on having a vehicle if I ever need to bug out, regardless of if the reason is just the fall of society, or a fantasy zpoc. With a vehicle I can carry a lot more ammo, and not worry about weight.
