Shotguns, zombie killing machines or extra weight?

One weapon that almost everyone has an opinion on is shotguns.  Max Brooks wrote in The Zombie Survival Guide that they are not as great as everyone thinks they are.  While many people consider them a primary weapon.
People will tell you they don't have enough range, or their shells are too bulky.  People also say that they take too long to reload.  If you support this weapon some arguments would be that it has the ability to stop zombies in their tracks.  Also if a zombie is too far away to be hit with a shotgun, why fight it instead of running away.  Shotguns are easier to aim than rifles, and when zombies approach and you are too nervous to think you need a shotgun to stand a chance of defeating a zombie.  Runners go to fast for someone to get a head shot with a rifle, but with a shotgun the spread of the shot allows a more sure kill.
I personally consider a shotgun a primary weapon, but let me hear your ideas.

A double barrel shotgun is probably the least effective one.  Although it still has stopping power it holds too little ammo to fight multiple zombie.

Doubles and lever actions is all we can have in my country.Lever shotties tend to be a bit clunky and finicky about feeding ( the ones I've had anyway) so I stick with my coach gun. Like anything, you train with it you become fast. I guess if you lived in a crowded city hoards would be a problem and capacity would count.

One of the many reasons I don't live in a crowded city.

lever action does allow you the possible badassness of flip-cocking tho, which must be considered. never underestimate the power of looking vaguely like a terminator!

You guys can't own anything but lever actions, and break downs in Australia? I didn't know that. Hmmm sure makes me glad I live in the US. Hell with the right licensing you can own artillery weapons here. lol

I agree.  One major argument against shotguns is they have no range.  But unless you are a zombie hunter range is unimportant.  Why waste ammo and attract more zach when a zombie is so far away it can't reach you?

80yds with a slug is plenty long enough after that I agree, why waste ammo when you can move on.

If all you've got is a semi auto shotgun and you know how to use it I believe you are GTG.

Best shotgun is the AA12..automatic shotgun..it can have drum mags and regular rounds magazines..no need cock your gun every time you have to shoot
